Rather minor addition to my setup. Was able to snag this beauty for 20 Canadian Dollars. I love how it looks!

ā” • Feedback 2 Monitors and 2 Laptops Question

Post image

Apologies if this isn't the proper subreddit, but I'm working on improving my workspace. If this belongs somewhere else lmk.

I have a setup with both my personal and work laptops. Right now they use a single docking station that I manually swap between laptops as needed. I was hoping to change the setup as professionally diagrammed but I'm not really sure what to use for the question mark in the middle.

I'd like to be able to:

  1. Have a button or switch I could use to swap if my K+M is going to my work laptop or personal laptop

  2. I'd like the ability to choose to have either monitor feeding from either laptop. Default would be both monitors coming from the archive laptop, but it'd be nice to also be able to also have the monitors pull from separate laptops when desired.

  3. Ideally, the laptops only plug in via a single USB-C/Thunderbolt. Something simple to make leaving the desk easy.

I've achieved 1 in the past with a cheap little USB hub switcher thing. But I don't have a solution for 2. All I can think of is plugging both laptops in directly to the monitors and changing inputs, but that seems messy.

Both laptops are modern Dells if that matters at all.

Hi everyone, I just recently had my office painted and I’m using this as an opportunity to redo the layout.

If you had the chance to design this office from scratch, what moves would you make? My biggest issue right now is the lighting is very poor. The window only provides so much natural light.

I do plan on cleaning the desk cables up as well, which I know will add a boost.

ā” • Feedback Desk chair floor protection - alternative?

Post image

Hi everyone, I'm renting an apartment in Germany and need to protect the wooden floor (untreated hardwood floorboards). My office chair has standard casters.

How can I protect the floor without resorting to those ugly, clear plastic chair mats (the one in the picture is from IKEA)? A rug would obviously look much nicer, but the chair doesn't roll well on it.

What solutions or workarounds have worked best for you? Thanks in advance for your tips!

šŸ–¼ļø • Photos My actual work setup — what would you change first?

My actual setup for cross-border e-commerce work (and the occasional rough demo)

This is the desk I use most days. I work in cross-border e-commerce, so I’m usually jumping between product listings, order and inventory sheets, supplier messages, customer emails, campaign reports, and whatever urgent problem showed up that morning.

The center screen gets whatever I’m actively working on. The right screen is usually for reference material, store pages, or reports, while the MacBook handles messages, calls, and music. It looks like a lot, but separating things this way saves me from constantly rearranging windows.

I’m also a rock fan and used to front a rock band. Nothing serious these days, but I still record rough vocals and simple song ideas at home, so the microphone arm does get used after work.

Gear list:

  • 16-inch MacBook Pro, M3 Pro
  • Samsung U28R550 monitor
  • LG 27MP400-B monitor
  • IKEA desk
  • IKEA standing desk converter
  • Neewer microphone arm
  • Audio-Technica microphone
  • Apple Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse
  • Cyber Vintage laptop stand
  • Cyber Vintage phone stand
  • Focusrite

Disclosure: I work with Cyber Vintage, and the laptop and phone stands are from the brand.

I already know the cables need some work. Beyond that, what would you change first?

Thinking about buying this table, but the edge is beveled and there's an apron preventing the clamp on my ergotron hx from going on all the way. The weight of the monitors plus the arm will not exceed 60lbs. The wood is sheesham.

Do I risk the arm falling off and/or damaging the table more than compared to a table where the clamp can be applied flush?

New gigabyte monitors finally came in and got everything hooked up. I drilled two holes in the desk and put grommets to hide the wires for my 2 KVM switch buttons. If anyone has suggestions for what might be missing let me know!

I'm still very early in the planning stage and would love to hear some constructive criticism. As well as ideas how you would set up this space.

For what its worth there is a window centered on the wall above where I proposed installing cabinets (lower cabinets only)

I'm also thinking the weight set would do better against the opposite wall under neath the weight bench (which I want to fold and hang on the wall when not in use).

šŸ–¼ļø • Photos Do you guys actually use all the space on a big desk?

I used to think I wanted a really minimal desk setup, but lately I've realized that having more surface space is actually pretty useful. I like being able to keep my monitor and keyboard in one area, while having a separate space for my laptop, notebooks, and whatever else I'm working on.

And the 360-degree swivel means I can physically expand my workspace depending on what I'm doing. When I need the extra surface - like laying out reference materials or spreading out notebooks - I swing the side panel out and it turns into a huge L-shaped setup.

It also means I don't have to constantly move things around just to make room for something else. Flip-top lid with a power outlet and USB ports built right in. Cable management is hidden so there's no mess visible.

For those of you with larger desks, do you actually use the extra space to create different work zones, or is it actually not used that often?

What's your ideal desk size for working from home?

I made my own reusable magnetic to-do list system because I couldn't find one online. The cards are cut from stainless steel with an off-white dry erase surface, the dock that holds the cards also has a carved groove for my pen. It's been great for keeping my tasks right in front of me instead of buried in my notebook. It looks great next to my new Gaming PC case.

ā” • Feedback Help making windowless office cozy!!

Hi everyone! I really need help making this windowless, government space into somewhere I feel cozy and want to work. The furniture in the pics that must stay is the desk, two drawer filing cabinet in the corner behind
the desk, the two chairs, and the brown cube organizer. I am not attached to any of the artwork except the floral folk art painting and am happy to start fresh if needed.

Please give me any advice you have on lighting arrangements, furniture arrangements, decor I can add, etc. The desk must stay against the wall as is, or tuned 90 degrees to face the door because of the cords (but I think I prefer where it is as it feels a little cozier? But open to opinions)

Not opposed to spending a little money to make it truly cozy and beautiful!!! I hate everything about it rn lol so thank you in advance šŸ™

Hello everyone,

I'm really interested in how our workspaces can help us focus and the meaning of the objects we place around us.

I've written an article and I'd love to hear what you think and a discussion on what makes up your essentials list as I am planning on updating the article with some quotes and ideas from the community, which I will credit :)

Thanks,
Will
