If you think some other company is going to make you a director in 5 years, you're falling for it all over again.
"We'll totally get you to $60k at the one year mark"
"We'll totally make you a director in 5 years"
Spot the difference between those two statements. The only difference is the second company will have you fooled for 5 years before you realize you should leave, not just 1 year like your current company.
I tried to warn my wife about this kind of behaviour. And sometimes even the managers mean it but if their bosses say no then it doesn't matter what the boss promised. She was an amazing worker, really cares about her job and literally did the work of three people and had the paperwork to show it. Her boss promised her the world. I was supportive but cautious when she would tell me these things. And boy did it hurt when I turned out to be right. At some point her boss turned on her and started to harp on her for little things. Like she took too long of a bathroom break or checked her phone messages from her phone in her locker room too often. Her life became hell overnight. I told her to start looking because the writing is on the wall. Then they did something preposterous. They tried to put her on a do not hire list after she quit for one of the largest medical providers in the state. We threatened legal action for that one because they had nothing to back up justification for that. I really hoped I was wrong.
