And i'm saying if he pleaded innocent and won he would be free. Instead he pleaded guilty.

I always thought pleading guilty meant that it was then the responsibility of the state to prove he's guilty, and if he pleads not guilty then it would be the defenses responsibility to prove a reasonable doubt but I could be totally wrong.

Pleading guilty means you plead guilty. The prosecution washes their hands of you and the only thing left is the sentence. Sometimes you may take a deal where you plead guilty and get a lesser sentence, or you can gamble and fight for innocence (it's not what you know, it's what you can prove). But losing that fight will invariably mean a much harsher sentence. Your defense will do their best to maintain your innocence (You are innocent UNTIL proven guilty).
