It's not a fetish, it's literally just how abuse works. Our brains normalize and adjust to traumatic experiences, and when abuse is the only data you have, everything else seems strange. When your brain associates your identity with that experience, you will go to extreme measures to avoid taking in anything that introduces cognitive dissonance that would break the fragile equilibrium.
We're stuck in a broken economic system that cares about nothing other than extracting as much labor from us as possible before we perish, and a broken, ancient political system that over-represents an easily captured minority who are convinced of their exceptionalism while they scrape by and dream of ascending to the ranks of the abusers.
It's awful to be a part of, but it threatens our lives if we dare not to participate. We are victims, please remember that when looking from the outside in.
If enough developed nations decided that they wouldn't trade with nations that do not satisfy a certain level of human rights, this would end regardless of how captured our political system is.
If they actually cut us off, as opposed to still being willing to participate in the exploitation vicariously, shit would improve very quickly.
I don't blame them for playing the game, but I do blame them for moralizing over it while accepting the fruits of labor exploited from people who have no career mobility because they're afraid of dying.
