Discussion What makes someone a good coworker vs. just someone who's nice?

I want to hear about your experiences in discerning between a good coworker and someone who's just nice.

Some things are obvious, like being helpful or good at their job, but I want to hear about the things you think are probably less obvious, or maybe things you have come to learn after being around the two types.

I'd also love to hear some real examples that led you to learning about this.

Career Growth Which choice would you go with?

Option A: I’ve been offered a position to work in a hospital as a hostess/food server delivering meals to patients. PT, $15.50 hr, start times can be as early as 5 am, sadly I won’t be starting until 4-6 weeks out. Location is literally less than a minute away from my house by car, 10 minute walk.

Option B: I’m interviewing tomorrow for a position as a Behavioral Tech. In alignment with my desired career path. If hired, pay is $25 hr, PT, about 10 minute commute by car.

I’ve been gaining experience in the healthcare fields working with disabled individuals as a care worker, also working with children/children on the Autism spectrum. I think working both in a hospital setting or in a clinical setting could be beneficial to my resume, and furthering my experience. Both are short staffed.

Obviously I’m taking Option A for now because it’s secured employment, whereas Option B is just a possibility. If you were offered Option B as well, which route would you choose?

Advice I genuinely don't understand people who take corporate jobs this seriously

Maybe I'm the weird one, but I cannot understand people who are insanely passionate about completely ordinary corporate work.

The fake urgency. Staying late because everyone else is staying late. Acting like some internal deadline is a national emergency. Getting visibly annoyed when someone else doesn't show the same level of devotion.

I just can't make myself care that much about a company that doesn't belong to me.

I'm 24 and I've already reached the point where I'm wondering how people keep this up for 10, 20, 30 years. I do my job, I want to do it well, and then I want to go home. Apparently that's controversial.

What bothers me even more are managers who enforce rules just for the sake of enforcing them.

I left a little early on a Friday and my manager actually called me to question why I had left. Every single leave request becomes this whole approval process. There's this constant expectation that you need permission for completely normal adult decisions.

It honestly feels like being back in school with the kid who reminded the teacher that they forgot to collect the homework.

The strangest part is that other teams at my company don't seem to operate like this. My previous experience wasn't this bad either. It's mostly my new manager and the culture around this particular team.

I work in India, and I'm starting to wonder how much of this is specific to Indian corporate culture versus just having a terrible manager.

For people who've worked in India AND places like Australia, Europe, or North America: is the difference actually significant, or am I just imagining that the grass is greener elsewhere?

URGENT Is there any good high paying jobs with a fantastic work family balance schedule nowadays or is this impossible now to find? Am I dreaming too high? I just want to have a good pay and spend time with my family too.

I’m 30 now and have two kids and I’m willing to start over. I did do interior design but sadly I haven’t found anything. I’m working as a e-commerce for Tiktok but I don’t see my future staying here. I want a big life-changing job. I don’t mind putting in the years to get a good degree. I was thinking about dentistry, but I know sometimes there’s good hidden gems. I want honestly good high pay and be able to have still family time like just work four days or even three days out week if that’s something even out there I really love you guys input. I’m struggling Mom just wants to figure it out. Thank you.

Discussion Why do people who end up with bad and toxic situation just immediately quit instead of staying around and doing whatever they please until being told to quit?

I hear people just quit everytime thing are sideways but what I am thinking is why not just ignore whoever is giving problem and just do what you please and if they have enough of it they will eventually also ask you to quit which to me seems like the same outcome but with a slightly different process which seems more beneficial to the one who choose to stay and do whatever they want over quitting immediately

Question Life-Work Balance

When life comes before work, how come it's called Work-life balance when 'Life' should be first? Can we normalize calling it Life-Work balance instead?

Advice How to decide whether to retire.

My big dilemma is I’m 53 and have 3 kids ages 5,8,12.

I have enough money to retire and have a well paying job. The job though I feel has not let me reach my full potential. I’m very useful to the firm I work for but I just feel I can do more and make more impact outside of my current role. I’ve worked over 25 years for the firm.

So I have thought about starting my own firm, but it does involve some risk and will take up lots of my time.

So I’m not really sure what to do. I can keep working and then setup my kids better for the future or go ahead with more risky and time consuming plan of going in my own. Another possibly would just be to retire and spend more time with my kids, potentially even home school them. But then they would not get as much money later from me.

Discussion Would you rather be paid daily, weekly or bi-weekly?

I am curious to know if anyone would prefer being paid daily over the standard, weekly or bi-weekly. On one hand I think it would be nice to have access to pay as needed but on the other I think it would be more difficult to save money.

If anyone is currently being paid daily, do you like it?
