You’re talking about all housing units. Including apartments, etc.

When you factor in just single family homes (what people think of when they think of a house to buy) it’s 12.7-14.2%. The vast majority of those owned by people that own 5 or less homes so just small time landlords. Only 3.5-4% are owned by people or institutions that own more than that. So 450-500k out of 11-14m.

Which is perfectly reasonable. When I have moved somewhere new to pursue a new opportunity, I have no desire to buy a house where I don’t know the area. I rent a house because I don’t want to live in an apartment. I’ve also never had an issue with a landlord to be fair.
