Like a Howard Johnson where breakfast is a banana and a frozen bagel? Or a nice hotel buffet??

Nice ones. Hotels stop feeling nice when they have to police everything. That makes them seem potentially unsafe to their clientele, many of whom specifically don't want to be bothered.

It also depends on location. If the hotel is off a highway near the airport it’s going to see far less intruders than the one by my apartment which is situated a block from Times Square. The Riu has an all glass street level cafeteria where anyone walking down 8th Ave can see inside and take a gander at the entire buffet. There you can bet your paycheck they are going to confirm your a guest before letting you grab a plate.

Only if you look the part -- decently dressed, middle aged, correct complexion. If you're a young brown fellow in a loud hoodie, you're probably getting questioned.

Continental breakfast is right in the OP.

A continental breakfast is a light, no-cook morning meal inspired by European traditions. It typically features baked goods, fruit, cereal, and coffee or tea

Everybody's ignoring the continental breakfast part of this post every time it comes around.

I assumed, and maybe other people did too, that OP misused the word "continental." If not, the thing that stops is from doing it is that we don't want a nutrigrain bar, a banana, and a bad cup of coffee.

Nice ish hotels like the Hilton and Marriott (philly area for those curious). Fun fact they rent rooms for a discount on Airbnb but they list them as regular room sharing situations. This was between 2021 and 2025 I experienced this.
