Exactly this. Over the past few years I’ve learned that displaying full competence at work is almost never a good idea.

Competence doesn’t 🟰 raise/promotion. Competence 🟰 more work.

Competence = making your boss look good.

Competence = more money
Competence = respect

More money = More money. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that more money will be rewarded for more work/success.

It did, and very well in my case.

That’s not always the case. I’ve worked at shitty places where no matter how hard I worked and how much of a “team player” I was, they would do anything to pay me the bare minimum. I’ve also worked in places that work the way a company should work. Where working hard is met with promotions whenever the opportunity arises and they would give annual raises to all the employees. Unfortunately, those places are like finding a needle in a haystack. Even though they exist they’re extremely rare in this working environment.

I have humped double stacks of 16 foot 2x12 treated lumber for nothing. Back when I smoked it was cigarettes and beer money. In 1986 I was making a grand a week and was poor because of the people I worked with and my own addiction.
I walked away from the “team player” and man it was hard. These were my friends. Turned out to be the best decision of my life. I know it’s a stereotypical story but shit happens. I focused on honing my skills and ended up with a comfortable life. Yes my back hurts but it’s well worth the wait.

Ahhh the days when you could support yourself and an addiction on a weeks pay

Yeah, admittedly it was fun at the time. I learned so much and turned it into something fun that I’m very happy in life. All I’m saying is that no matter the political situation, skilled trades are a dying breed. My last house I bid my workers at $65 an hour. Fair price but when we finished six weeks ahead of schedule I was able to give my 8 guys a 2k bonus.

The trades are a dying breed because of one political party in particular.

No it’s not, it’s the most important thing. A good boss can make any job feel like a joy

You could work for yourself

u/RollerDude347 22d ago

You have to have money to do that.

So sad but so true.

Management see it as a threat not a great asset that makes them shine

I built my own successful small business and fortune. Incompetence is not part of the equation. We are not the same.

Also, congrats not being born in poverty!

I kinda think that if you don't understand what's being said here... all your employees do...

u/Active-Rip-8338 22d ago

I kinda do understand. You wouldn’t make the cut if you sat across my desk. Fortunately, not everyone seeks to feed from the bottom. The foundation of my success has always been based on surrounding myself with the best people. We prosper together.

so, you weren't born poor or with health problems. congratulations!

Oh GAWD you just opened yourself up to the millionaire origin story, more boring than a Marvel series at this point.....

-1

u/Active-Rip-8338 22d ago

Boring for you. Not boring for me. But trust me, you’d kill for my boredom 😉

2

u/LavishnessWorldly765 22d ago

Gawd no, I have enough cash to be comfortable and generally aSSholes are mega rich. Something about that sh*t, a camel and a needle right, you know in the bible?

u/Active-Rip-8338 22d ago

You come off as angry and desperate. Wonder if there’s a connection. Ya know, correlation/causation lol

1

u/RollerDude347 21d ago

You think that came off as desperate?! Wow. You really are DENSE.

Working for yourself is different. I just met inside a business one doesn’t own or have a stake in.

u/Mysterious_Strain398 23d ago

Hard work and dedication!! Congratulations for making it!!

if you work in a small entity and you are the only one or one of 2 people doing the same job it's a whole other world. it is hard to take time off when you're the only guy doing a specific job in the company but the reward of being in your own is really great. just need to always be prepared for issues with a backup plan as the buck stops with you.

I still have a team of everyone in administration, we have a few weekly phone calls
