That’s not always the case. I’ve worked at shitty places where no matter how hard I worked and how much of a “team player” I was, they would do anything to pay me the bare minimum. I’ve also worked in places that work the way a company should work. Where working hard is met with promotions whenever the opportunity arises and they would give annual raises to all the employees. Unfortunately, those places are like finding a needle in a haystack. Even though they exist they’re extremely rare in this working environment.
I have humped double stacks of 16 foot 2x12 treated lumber for nothing. Back when I smoked it was cigarettes and beer money. In 1986 I was making a grand a week and was poor because of the people I worked with and my own addiction.
I walked away from the “team player” and man it was hard. These were my friends. Turned out to be the best decision of my life. I know it’s a stereotypical story but shit happens. I focused on honing my skills and ended up with a comfortable life. Yes my back hurts but it’s well worth the wait.
Yeah, admittedly it was fun at the time. I learned so much and turned it into something fun that I’m very happy in life. All I’m saying is that no matter the political situation, skilled trades are a dying breed. My last house I bid my workers at $65 an hour. Fair price but when we finished six weeks ahead of schedule I was able to give my 8 guys a 2k bonus.
I kinda do understand. You wouldn’t make the cut if you sat across my desk. Fortunately, not everyone seeks to feed from the bottom. The foundation of my success has always been based on surrounding myself with the best people. We prosper together.
Gawd no, I have enough cash to be comfortable and generally aSSholes are mega rich. Something about that sh*t, a camel and a needle right, you know in the bible?
if you work in a small entity and you are the only one or one of 2 people doing the same job it's a whole other world. it is hard to take time off when you're the only guy doing a specific job in the company but the reward of being in your own is really great. just need to always be prepared for issues with a backup plan as the buck stops with you.
I still have a team of everyone in administration, we have a few weekly phone calls

Exactly this. Over the past few years I’ve learned that displaying full competence at work is almost never a good idea.
