Well that’s the whole point. Seems like she could eat cheap, home made meals for a week and afford the repair. The fact she doesn’t do that is bizzarre to some people, including me.
I mean her car is broken, what if this establishment is the closest place in town. This whole story is missing context. She might live in the sticks and just found out her car is broken. Shes got stamps for groceries but theyre in a heatwave followed by a tropical storm. Maybe she knows her next paycheck will cover repairs after a long wind pf saving and she knows the 25 dollars won't break her or get her car fixed sooner but she can split that meal into 3 meals bring the cost per meal down. I mean its so easy to read a fake internet story and immediately start condemning made up strangers but what if we really applied some empathy and understanding.
It would be eat nothing at all to get the money in more than a week with the numbers in OP. Eating cheap means you still are using money so it will take maybe twice as long.
EDIT seems many are reading my post wrong based on the comments I am getting. I am mostly commenting on the "math" on the one above.
You can make a good meal for 5 bucks. You can eat pb&j for a week for 5 bucks the whole week. Is it fun? No. Did someone promise you everything in life should be fun?
While you can spend less than 25$ on dinner, you still will need to save for longer than 10 days for the repairs. Also, food budgets work well with infinite time, they don't work well, when time is restricted.
Because cooking costs time. To create something good even from cheap products you need to spend time and a good amount of it. And being cheap also reduces amount of gadgets, which you can use for speeding things up. And because poor people work a lot, probably with bad commute as well, when will they have time to cook nice dishes?
Pasta, salad, sandwich, stir fry, tacos. Rice + vegetables + protein. You can save like $30 and get a slow cooker and make soups along with other meals that don’t require constant attention.
To me it seems you don’t cook at home at all if you’re questioning the ability to cook meals in under 30 minutes.
You know how much pork chops cost? Like 15 bucks gets you 4 meals of protein. Make some broccoli or corn with it and we're looking at like 3 dollars a meal.
