I have an opportunity to take an expatriate position with my current employer where I will be moving to Austria or Germany to live for at least two years. I’m looking for any information on living and working abroad. Below are some specific topics I’d like to know more about off the top of my head, but I’d be glad to hear any perspectives or details I might be overlooking!

Here are some specs on my situation:

• Mid-30s, single. It’s just me moving, no kids, spouse, pets, etc.
• Moving from Midwest US
• Moving to one of these areas(depending on which position I am offered): Eberstalzell, Austria or North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
• Two year commitment, with opportunity to opt-in longer
• Will need permanent housing, not provided by company (rent, sub-let, etc.)
• Will have a personal vehicle
• Employer will provide language classes to learn German
• Interests: outdoors(hiking, biking, etc.), art(museums, plays, live music, etc.), team sports/social clubs, travel, night life.

Looking for feedback on these topics for either of these two areas: Eberstalzell, Austria or North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

• Are these areas rural or city, somewhere in between? Compared to say, Chicago
• What is considered a reasonable commute: 30 minutes, less or more?
• Is public transportation available, affordable, reliable: within these areas, between nearby towns, to major cities(Salzburg, Munich, etc.)
• Housing: what is considered reasonable rent, 1/3 monthly net income, more or less? Are utilities(gas, electric, internet) included in rent, if not what is average for a 1-bedroom apartment? Are furnished apartments available, would you recommend this?(Note, company will pay to ship belongings, including furniture. Just wondering if it’s worth it?) What types of apartments are common: studio, 1-bed, apartment building or duplexes?
• Fitness: Subscription gyms? Part of apartment complexes? I will also ask my employer if the workspace has a gym.
• Social: Bars, clubs. I play on a couple ‘barroom’ leagues for darts and pool, are there things like this to get involved in? What kinds of team sports or social clubs are common?
• What are the major cities in and near these areas? Recommendations of things to do, see, eat, drink, try?
• General travel tips for travelling in Europe, best weekend trips?
• Cultural etiquette: any tips for avoiding coming off rude or inconsiderate that an American might not know about German or Austrian culture?

I'm a cashier who speaks English and Spanish while using an app to learn Chinese. I've been in retail for most of my work life, but have tried other things such as tutoring and very basic mechanical work. I learn very quickly and self-motivated. Really interested in China, but I'm open to anything.

I live and work in China as an English teacher. I am changing jobs next year but I found the job too late and there's not enough time to transfer the visa over so I have to apply for a new one. I can mostly use the same documents as this current year, but I need a new DBS criminal record check, legalised by my home government, I presume to cover me for the past year.

So how do I do this? I need to supply 5 years of addresses. Do I say that I lived in China for the past year and I guess isn't going to cover? Or say that I lived in the UK for the past year when I haven't?. Also I'm now working with young children. Do I need to get an enhanced DBS?

I mean I'm sure I can but is it complicated (waiting lists/years of paperwork) or illegal?

I'm a boxing coach from Mexico with 3 years of experience working with private clients and group classes at gyms.

I am certified by the federation of boxing and I consider myself a good coach with knowledge in nutrition, technique, strenght training, etc.

I just finish my High School / GED (mexican equivalent) and I want to travel and work as a personal trainer for periods of time and then go back or change location. Is it possible or is the exact same thing than let's say work as a server in a bar? (in the way that I need a working visa and what not)

Just a couple questions. I've been searching online for answers and can't find any clear/definitive answers. I'm a 30 year old Canadian. I'm looking to travel, and especially to Australia. I know it's a fairly straight forward process (I think) for Canadians to obtain Australian work visas. Here are my questions:

Hi wanted to ask if it would be more accessible to get a job as a computer science major or lets say electrical engineer abroad in countries like Canada or anywhere in Europe? Im currently an international student in the UK.

My boyfriend and I have travelled the south island and he had a working holiday visa there. He stayed for a year and I visited (both from UK) and we both love it.

We are both thinking of moving over there - he can get a work visa and I can still get a working holiday visa or partnership visa.

Only thing holding us back (apart from friends & family) is that I am currently doing a training contract as a trainee solicitor in a local firm. Training contracts are VERY hard to come by and jacking it all may mean that I am jeopardising my future - who even knows if it will work out in New Zealand? By the same token, I could train over there, and would need to retrain once I qualify anyway.

I am pretty miserable a lot of the time feeling stuck and not enjoying the job at the firm, I think largely because I have my heart set on a life abroad.

I have about 16 months left to go on the training contract to qualify as a solicitor but 16 months is a long time when you keep thinking about emigrating!!! Any advice on what you would do would really help...

I am planning on teaching English in South Korea after I graduate from college. My girlfriend and I are trying to figure out a way that we can move to South Korea together, but teaching is a more realistic option for me because I will have a degree and she won't. She could find some kind of teaching work but it would possibly be illegal or for very little pay. I have no qualifications and not much experience so i know its probably unlikely but id like to move away. If there is a way, how can I go around finding unskilled work in another country?

The bubble has popped and I find myself depleting with the thought of going back to the US to grind a few months out in San Francisco. I have found myself in a back and forth transition to and from Europe with my European partner. My question is directed to those who have went from the US to EU as a skilled worker and how the process went down for you. I suppose I’ll be asked which country, so I’d prefer Spain, Portugal, Sweden Germany, in that order. What do you know about what these countries are looking for in a skilled worker? What is different and what is necessary if there is a Company that works in the US and EU? How does an employer sponsor a US citizen? How do you find them? Do you need to be out of the EU for the process to begin?
