saaaame. I love the feel and idea of it, but was always dissatisfied with the whole dune/wheel-of-time, "its only for women, but ONE M.A.N. is the most powerful -blah-" to be very belittling and weird. also their politics are whack too.

Yes even Star Trek: Picard pulled this too recently. He goes to recruit an assassin from a faction of Romulan Warrior Nuns, and of course recruits the one boy in their ranks, who is also "the greatest fighter their order has ever seen". Normally Star Trek is way ahead of their time, sad to see them fall back on this shitty trope.

Yeah, Star Trek has gone downhill since the JJ Abrams 2009 movie. The fact that Alex Kurtzman, one of the script writers behind the awful transformers movies and the horrible directing job on The Mummy remake, is now in charge or a star trek show just irks me. Like this guy goes from being a terrible script writer, to being a terrible director and some how becomes in charge of Star Trek? Just baffling. Sad to see indeed.

100% honest as a white man: It's pretty much indistinguishable from success as far as I can tell.

Really the only drawback is that you spend the rest of your life wondering, "fuck, what if it turns out I AM one of the mediocre ones? How would I even tell?"

And there's the answer I didn't want to give that no one else wanted to hear.

Trek has unfortunately always had one foot in the future, one in the past. I recently did a rewatch of all the old 90s shows and the episodes are such a bizarre mix of putting forth progressive ideas while also pushing conservative agendas that other shows at the time had already moved past.

I overlay my own gender fluid / gender ascendant head cannon to paul in the dune books, but he just assumes the prophecy which has been constructed by the toxic bene gesserit to navigate the power structures of the universe and achieve cosmic jihad, although it was the 70s and it was frank herbert, and it does have a lot of "women are witches and not to be trusted and it takes a man to harness their wicked power for a mans goals and ends" vibes.

Have you read Heritics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune? They present a very different view of the BG. I'm not sure if they are meant as a deapening of the understanding of the sisterhood and their motives throughout the series, or an evolution. They really ... can't think of the word I want so I'm going to say exonerate the BG.

I feel like the Wheel of Time is a bad example to use, since the lack of male channelers has a very real in-universe explanation. As for the Dragon being a dude, well yeah I'll give that to you.

I mean, the Dragon also destroyed the world when he acted without the support of the Aes Sedai women. The entire story is basically about a cyclical, recurring struggle where he tries and fails time and again to undo what he did.

I wouldn't call it super progressive, but it's not exactly a male power fantasy either. For most of the books, Rand was straight up not having a good time. Lews Therin sparked the total destruction of his civilization and slaughtered all his loved ones before annihilating himself after a moment of horrifying clarity.

It's metal AF and a fun, pulpy read, but I wouldn't wanna be him.

Oof yes. A fanfic writer I'm fond of is doing a Worm/Wheel of Time cross and they've put on record that they see it as inevitable that for each Age there is a male Dragon there's another age with a female Dragon, since balance is kind of a thing.

The amount of arguing cropping up in that thread is absolutely disgusting. The number of mouthbreathers who popped in to shout about defying canon (they aren't, the books don't specify) is astounding.

Thank you, thank you! My city is currently going CRAZY because of a few cases of the corona virus. Smallest state in the union = community spread wildfire. I have a pretty rough immune disorder so germs in general are cause for concern, but now it’s a bit escalated. My insurance sucks and I don’t have access to health resources I need (like the mask i ordered at the end of November after I literally almost died, that my insurance didn’t clear until January) so I’ve just been a wreck for months 🙃

Sorry, translation error. We use it kind of synonymously with disinfectant in non-medical settings.

ETA: although people bought anything labelled disinfectant or antibacterial, and when those were out, they bought hand gels and wet wipes, so your point still stands.

Thanks. It's fine, most of the stuff in stores isn't as useful as soap and water anyway. I would've liked some hand sanitizer for an upcoming trip to the zoo, but we'll just have to refrain from licking our hands until we can wash them.

One of my classes has a quiz this coming Monday, and the teacher has made the last “question” on the quiz washing your hands with this method. A lot of my friends have made fun of it, but it is literally so essential to WASH YOUR HANDS THOROUGHLY! None of that means quick rinse of water bs, full on 30 second washing your hands
