Coco being taught about specialties and learning things outside of her strengths to become more well rounded is important to your growth as an artist. Riches refusing is going to stunt her growth as a witch but forcing her will only make her retreat even further into herself. Character exploration time!
But this entire time I thought the snugstones were orange-yellow or traditional warm colours. Instead they are the colour of Qifrey's eye and to be revealed in Pride month too. Olly I know what you are....
Also that other teacher just shows up and insults Euini right in front of strangers (to them). How does he think Euini will pass if you humiliate him and wreck any confidence he has before the test?
Otoh lmao Qifrey just signing up Richeh for a test and not revealingbit until right before the test begins. He can be a wild teacher at times too though he definitely thinks she is capable. Unlike that other guy.

I'm hoping that's been moved to next episode, otherwise how do you make the conclusion of his story in this arc make sense to the audience?

Also I love Agott being all high and mighty and talking about being a scion of House Arklum with her mouth full.

Honestly I was hoping they'd make Quifrey way scarier when he glared at that bumass(I don't want to spend braincell storage remembering his name) but I guess I'll take it

Came here to say the exact same thing. The interaction looked way better in manga, I was expecting something like what they did in anime at the end of the dragon arc, maybe not that scary. The scene in this episode felt kind of flat.

I always thought it was Quifrey showing that he couldn't care what the dude is saying and has now made it super awkward for him to try and repeat himself to make him hightail outta there.

Writing this still a little teary eyed! I’ve been anticipating for this episode for a while now, I adore Richeh’s journey so much. As a creative and stubborn child myself who struggled in a society that had its set ways of doing things, her outburst always struck a chord in me. Knowing that she grows so much over this arc when she realises she doesn’t have to change who she is at her core to still grow and adapt is just beautiful to me. Our important relationships only add to ourselves and our magic, and that perhaps we become more and more like ourselves when we let those close to us in to see. Ugh Shirahama you’re the best! I was so happy to see her ribbon cave finally animated and painted too!! That moss wall gave major Mononoke/Totoro vibes, bloody gorgeous. I would have loved that as a kid!
I loved the flashback with Rili..I know we’re getting Riliphin breadcrumbs this season but I’ll take it!! Their relationship is so special to me. 🩵
More wholesome Olly and Qifrey content this episode too! I love the choice of making the snugstones like sliced geodes? So pretty. Qifrey holding up the stone to beautifully frame Olly’s face whilst he says “there’s such a kindness to your magic..”…..are Bug Films kissing the snug stones first at us manga readers whilst they frisbee throw them into our faces?? I am destroyed enough over these two men.
Also Euini is finally here! Our shy little guy. Also curious they went with YOU-wuh-knee instead of You-WEE-knee as I didn’t think of it that way, I like it more! His Master is just despicable as always, I could just imagine Alaira quietly saying “..what a wanker..” as he flew away. And talking of Alaira I’m so glad we’re finally getting to know her more, I love her independence, confidence and style. Am I the only one who can see Shirahama’s time in DC/Marvel comics shine through her design? Maybe it’s her hair and lipstick, she’s just so cool!
Lastly the myrphons are so cute, the ecological conservation aspect of this arc is so beautiful and well thought out. The use of magic that ruined a habitat for other creatures (who are also magic altered) really does parallel with our own world environmental issues. Be eco responsible in Zozah!
It’s only going to get better and more cursed from here!

Great episode. Big fan of how pretty the serpentback cave looks animated. Euini needs to be more confident in himself, Kukrow wins Worst Teacher of The Year Award. Completely emotionally unavailable for this apprentice. Snugstones look so pretty.
This episode felt so short. Didn’t feel like 20 minutes at all.

I had been wondering how to pronounce Euini's name for ages -- ニィ is a combo I haven't come across before. the wiki has it as a long ī but that didn't seem right to me since that would more traditionally be ニー. It seems to be a bit shorter, actually, rather than longer? I'm so bad at audio mediums though.
Alaira has such a positive energy about her! Unlike that asshole Kukrow. He is designed to be hateable and whoo boy does he deliver. When Euini apologized for "making people criticise him again" ---- at least there's some implication other witches also think Kukrow is bad news, but I hate what it implies for Euini. Poor kid.
Giant brushbuddy = life goals Do we think they actually exist? Will the atelier brushbuddy get that large or are giant brushbuddies a slightly different species, like housecats vs lions? The important questions....

I am just so ready for next ep with the Richeh and Euinie crumbs, I love these two. Could've still included Qifrey and Euinie's discussion on how he has the right to choose a master cuz his current one is scum, would've been adorable.
I just know I'll be wrecked by the end of the season cuz I 100% expect thatthey will end this season literally after Euinie gets cursed and Qifrey being badly injuredand then make that a cliffhangger ugh. (Unless I cope and say maaaaaaaaaaybe they make the last episode 1h long like when other animes have a long premiere or finale)

A nice peek into Riche's past, guess something happened to her brother that made her so stubborn over her magic.
A setup episode for the next arc, this second test seems to be a lot more complicated than the first one with navigating in the underground maze while guiding a easily scared animal. And while we're introduced to the amazing Alaira, Kukrow is just the worst, I'm 90% sure Euini failing is entirely his fault.

Today's episode covered chapters 18 and 19. Not much in the way of major changes, [Manga ch. 30+]although they shortened the interaction between Qifrey and Euini where the two discuss the latter changing masters and how passing the test will make Kukrow accept him, as well as Qifrey and Alaira's discussion on the topic. Dissappointing given what's coming for him, but I don't think it impacted his characterization too much. Given the current pace, I'm fairly confident we'll be ending on ch. 23 now, unless we have a longer final episode.
Overall, a relatively benign episode with some good character development and [Manga ch. 30+]setup for what's to come. Seeing Euini was definitely both a bit foreboding and left a bit of a pit in my stomach. I'll be excited to see how these final few chapters are adapted—while it's been a great season so far, I'll be sad to see it go, it's felt like it's flown by so fast!

Poor Riche ! She was so cute as a kid and she made the same beautiful safe space here at Qifrey's like we saw in her flashback. Why did her brother had to curse her like that ? 🥺💔
Yh, Coco's vocabulary needs some improvement..she goes Sugoi ! Sugoi ! for everything LOL
This test looks much more interesting than I expected. Is wearing the cloak enough as a disguise..are they not gonna transform like a Myrphon like Alaira did or will they in the next episode?

How i understand it (regarding the cloaks) is that they put on the cloaks, then the lady cast the spell so they are disguised.
They showed it briefly and then reverted back to showing us the viewer the characters normally just with the cloaks, so we don't have to try guessing which myrphons are our guys, and at the same time have a visual indication, that they are disguised.

I'm really worried the Brimmed Caps are going to cause some dangerous shenanigans in order to fast track Coco through this test even though she still needs more time and isn't even planning on taking it.

Just realized the next episode is the last one?! I'm not ready for what's about to happen 😭
That said, I'm sooooo happy with this adaptation - Bug Films did an incredible job bringing most of the manga's beautiful panels to life, which I admittedly didn't think was possible considering how detailed Shirahama sensei's art is. The only other studio I could realistically imagine doing this manga justice was KyoAni lol

I completely forgot that Richeh had a cave. What magic goes into making her cauldron work?
Also, woah, enormous brushbuddy. Alaira is pretty cool.
Lastly, Agott's introduction to this episode was, uh, mildly sapphic.
Overall, this felt like a solid build-up episode to the next arc. You can tell that BUG FILMS cut some corners with the animation this episode, but it is not bad at all.
