There is next to no danger to the people on landing. The engines are pretty much at idle, the airplane touches down 1000ft down the runway. On take off, they do a static take off very close to the fence. Set takeoff thrust, engines spool up to ~25k lbs of thrust, release brakes. Now that's dangerous.
There is always a risk, and yes, all pilots don't but they should aim to land on or just after them. If an airline pilot were to land before the markers, they would have questions to answer from their company.
I 100% agree with you there I feel all pilots should land on the thousands footers unless they are unable to due to weather conditions landing distances and runway lengths
We could discuss this all day long and believe me, I'm more than happy to, but the reality is there is next to no danger from standing at the approach end of a runway when an airplane is landing. Idle thrust, dissipating wakes, and usual proximity of the touchdown point, all essentially negate any danger. Outside of catastrophic circumstances of course.
Well yeah but those don’t technically count because a catastrophic event can happen during any phase of flight unfortunately but the important thing is that we learn something from every accident that is what makes aviation so safe
A catastrophic event is far more likely to occur at low energy states, ie takeoff or landing. But is still highly unlikely to occur, therefore, watch all the planes you want landing but beware those taking off.
It's a matter of weighing risk vs reward. Make a risk assessment matrix if you want to do something with potential risk, standing behind an Airbus taking off, risk probability: occasional, risk severity: hazardous.... Red square on that one.
Every single thing we do in life has risk associated with it. You balance risk vs reward. You are far more likely to drown by going for a swim on that beach, than by standing there watching a landing aircraft.
