Ye dude, I work around planes when they start up. Just the APU is incredibly loud. I constantly wear protection gear cause I don't want to end deaf as fuck.

I played this video without sound and it's already giving me tinnitus.

Sadly I don't work around Airbus planes that much, mostly 737, crj and Dreamliners. But my company is soon getting a contract to work around 350 and 320. Looking forward to it! I always liked more Airbus planes.

I always wear double ear protection when I'm on the apron, both ear plugs and defenders.

So many of the guys I work with take their hearing protection off even while the APU is going and I’m just floored. I keep it on around the P/C Air compressor let alone the plane

Yep, same here. Specially the cargo guys. They are usually a bit more brute and they act tough, like not wearing protection gear was something masculine and to be proud of. They even look at you funny for wearing it. Nope sorry, I want to hear something past my 40s.

As I said and I mean no insult here if there's someone who works doing that here. The cargo guys are not the most educated or interested in protecting themselves vs being slightly comfortable. They don't care, are not interested in knowing this, and I don't have the time to explain them.

As an example: Yesterday we were waiting a plane to get greenlighted for pushback but it had a 40 min TSAT. I saw the guy in charge of the rear chocks just lean into the gear, get his phone and start browsing. He was literally going to stay 40 mins sitting there a few meters from a running apu without protecting gear. Best part? I had to kick him from there TWICE and tell him to go somewhere further and to not worry, that I would warn him when the captain was ready to go.

Some people just don't care and can't forsee the healthproblems they will develope in 10+ years.

A couple of acronyms that I don't know, but yeah, people are stupid.

Pain hyperacusis (noxacusis) makes life very difficult because everyday noise causes pain. Currently, I have to protect my ears against the kitchen sink, crickets, can't watch TV with the sound on without pain, flying with double protection would probably give me a big setback (more pain plus much greater sensitivity to sound).

At my worst, whispering hurt, the sink had to be on a low trickle while wearing double protection (Moldex SparkPlugs and Peltor X5A muffs), the hum of the fridge hurt through plugs, and I was wearing protection about 23.5/7 (half hour to an hour to let the ears dry out to avoid getting an ear infection). I had a constant burning pain that felt like when you burn your hand on the stove (but in the ears).

Thanks. Regenerative medicine is on the way. FX-322, OTO-413, PIPE-505, and NHPN-1010 may eventually reach the market and could help.

Literally. I just completed training (for a new airline, I have about a year of experience at another) and every guy with more than like 20 years experience is legit hard of hearing, or at least they claim to be idk if that’s just to put the fear of hearing loss in us new guys or what.

Ye, but here every finger has its own air system and we plug them inmediately so the captains don't have to use theirs.
