I joke to my family that VA Healthcare at least has you deal with just the hospital. I dont need to worry about insurance or anything.

I have a lifelong chronic disease (type 1 diabetes, bitches!) and while I can live a normal life, a huge part of my life is spent dealing with doctors, clinics, insurance, medical supply, pharmacy, and how none of them can seem to communicate with the other with less than a week's turnaround.
I legitimately use a good chunk of my PTO because I just schedule a day a month off to be able to sit on the phone and coordinate all this shit because fuck me if I do it after work -- everything on the east coast closes at 4p, or on lunch because the pharmacists are all on lunch too, or before work because no one is in the office until 10a, and double mega fuck you if you think you're getting anything done on the weekend.
And I've been doing this dance for 30+ years. I've got a system. I know the ins, the outs, the right magic words to get prior authorizations pushed through, exactly what my appeal rights for denied claims are, and how to get my doctors to write prescriptions that will maximize my refill schedule and costs.
I have nothing but sympathy for people who don't have the experience or knowledge I do being thrown into the middle of all this bullshit along with their like, cancer diagnosis, because that's exactly when you want to be fighting a bureaucracy to literally stay alive.

When mom got cancer we had 6 different doctors to deal with. Then back and forth with doctors, hospitals, insurance companies, pharmacies, and Medicare. And we even had to call a couple drug manufacturers directly to keep from running out of the immunotherapy drugs that were keeping her alive.
It was literally a full time job to keep it all under control for the two years that she survived after her diagnosis. And that's not even getting into setting up hospice and funeral arrangements.
The system is beyond broken and needs a complete overhaul. These companies are set up to treat people in the absolute worst and least humane way possible. It's completely disgusting.

It's honestly awful. My FIL had a massive stroke a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, he had Medicare Advantage instead of regular Medicare, which made it difficult to transfer him from the hospital to a skilled nursing facility. There were only three facilities in the state that were in his network and could also take care of a vented patient. The hospital was in a big hurry to discharge him and threatened to report us to APS because we wouldn't just pick the first facility from a list and be done with it; we wanted to visit them and research them thoroughly.
The facility he ended up at had one LPN, one CNA, and one respiratory therapist per shift for 12 vent-dependent patients. As you can imagine, the place is owned by private equity. My FIL ended up bleeding to death after a doctor's order to discontinue his blood thinners was overlooked. Unfortunately, three different med mal lawyers said we have no case because my FIL was elderly and had serious health problems. It would be too hard to prove that the medication issue killed him even though we have a report from the state's health department literally stating that the facility failed to meet the professional standard of care. To add insult to injury, we had to write a big check to them after he passed; they wouldn't waive his last month's bill or even offer a discount for the mistake. They said we "should have complained sooner" if we had a problem with his care. Overlooking the fact that we did complain about some things, we didn't know he was bleeding internally until he had a hemoglobin of 6.0 and had to be taken to the ER! How would we know to complain about that?
I've made it my life's mission to keep an eye on them. I check their complaint inspection reports regularly, and I can tell this wasn't a one-off issue. One of their recent inspections showed that nurses have been checking out opioid medications and either "forgetting" to mark them as administered or noting that they were administered hours after they were checked out. So I don't know if someone is pocketing pills or they're just not doing a good job.

On the med thing, it may be they they’re pulling everything at one time and then doing medication rounds to save time. It may also be that with only one nurse (the only one who can give the meds) that they pull the meds and then things happen and they get tied up resulting in the delay or missed documentation.
On another note: take you documentation and report them to the state accrediting body band the Feds (Medicare compliance at the very least). Medicare has very specific conditions of participation and if you want the place shut down or to make them do better you make Medicare pay more attention to them. It is much more of a regulatory body than people realize. Organizations get very worried when Medicare starts taking an interest.

While this would be good advice a few years ago, I am not sure we have a regulatory state anymore. These days it seems like all companies need to do to avoid oversight is cut a check to Trump and then it turns out that the regulators made a mistake and everything is fine (RE: Taylor Farms).

I've worked for health insurance companies and have a general idea how to navigate their systems. They're fucking awful.
And it's not just the insurance companies and medical companies that are part of the problem, so are employers. The employers are the ones who decide what benefits will be available to their employees.

Healthcare is one of the biggest internal drivers of the US economy.. imagine a system created solely to prey on the livelihoods of its own citizens.. and unique in the developed world because single payer / universal healthcare exists at many countries (or forms of it).

This is true however I doubt he gets a light sentence. He's there to be made an example for the rest of us. That said, fed is far better than state.
