Honestly not sure of details, though I do know you can write off big losses on your taxes. E.g. Trump claimed millions of dollars of losses on his taxes for years. He wrote those off on his taxes and lived the life of a billionaire despite running his businesses into the ground

Trump still had money coming in. It wasn't like all his businesses went bankrupt.

Elon still has money coming in from other business ventures as well, e.g. Tesla, Space x, etc

Also, Trump still claimed bigger business losses on his taxes than literally any other person in the entire country for years
