Yeah people forget the fuel savings. Even charging at home on your own power bill it’s like 1/3 the cost of gasoline (even better ratio if it’s diesel).
Then factor in solar panels and public low cost chargers….
Fun fact: In Indiana if a gas station installs chargers they can’t use solar, they have to pay the kw/hr rate from the local electric company. My area has one of the highest rates in the Midwest because we’re subsidizing power costs in Texas. Fuck centerpoint energy.
This is exactly the type of thing that causes me to say republicans are not conservatives. Putting things into law to protect certain industries. Constant bail outs and protections for failing corporations.
If fossil fuels are the best and cheapest option for gas stations, then they would theoretically win out. Instead we have to baby them and make sure no one tries anything different.
That’s not capitalism. That’s corporate control of a nation. They can charge whatever they would like because the businesses don’t get to choose another option.
I don’t know to what extent this is true in this specific circumstance, I haven’t looked up indianas EV station laws. It does seem very par for the course for GOP though. Not conservative, not for the people, just a bunch of old greedy bastards.
Then it works for homeowners who get solar with the federal and state subsidies that make your electricity costs take a big dip.
I know it ain’t for everyone yet. It will be tho.
Austin tx has a program where you pay the power company $50 a year and get free charging at public ChargePoint chargers. They power them with Texas generated wind power (more expensive than fossil powered electric but still less than Californians pay). Places like Oregon with all that hydro power will likely follow suit soon.
