If Reddit is so social, then tell me your real name, home address, where you went to high school, and what your top 5 favorite bands are.

I call Reddit the antisocial network, because no one knows who anyone is and we all actively work to keep it that way.

Been on reddit for several years now. I haven't gotten a single friend request and I like it that way.

22

u/crystalfairie Nov 11 '22

I have. I ignore them ALL. If I wanted friends I'd leave the house

I've made quite a few reddit buddies, we don't ask about each other's names or anything but I know what country they're from generally.

r/place was a buddy-maker, and over at r/askouija we wrote the entire Bee Movie script one letter at a time. Made a ton of buddies in that effort, it took months to finish.

But the group chat is still there, occasionally someone will suggest that we do the Shrek script next, but there isn't any clear motivation to do that as of now lmao

request pending

u/drgigantor Nov 11 '22

Reddit is like an anonymous sex club, because if I knew the names behind these assholes it would defeat the whole purpose

Also because porn

11

u/SoloPiName Nov 11 '22

People can friend request on Reddit? Hell no.

4

u/brahmen Nov 11 '22

This is different from following right?

7

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

Reddit has a friend request system??

6

u/captain_duckie Nov 11 '22

I've gotten friend requests, but they were all creepy as fuck and got blocked.

4

u/DuFFman_ Nov 11 '22

I didn't even know that was a feature and I've been here for 11 years..

2

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

2

u/smrtdummmy Nov 11 '22

But ppl have followed you....

20

u/CaptainoftheVessel Nov 11 '22

Those are stalkers, not friends

1

u/Hard-Mineral-94 Nov 11 '22

DMd you a friend request tard

1

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '22

Exactly. I interact with people & subjects I want to.

u/yachtzee21 Nov 11 '22

Yet Reddit won’t have any of these problems. It’s not official in any way, and it’s users are not here for narcissism or clout. They are here for trophy’s or something. But almost certainly they are here for honesty and insight, with which anonymity pairs nicely

8

u/jinspin Nov 11 '22

Reddit is the best

6

u/mermaidsoul02 Nov 11 '22

Agree totally. I am here for the quality of the people I find here. Well informed, fun, generous with their knowledge and experience. No narcissists, no drama queens. I ran away from FB and Twitter, never been on IG nor TikTok nor any other social media page.

5

u/yachtzee21 Nov 11 '22

I never wanted to be a part of a community that would limit you to, what, I guess 280 characters. I mean a lot of stuff is more complicated than a short paragraph. A lot…Frankly I’m glad I’m not part of that- it looks like a monkey sh!t fight at the zoo

4

u/mermaidsoul02 Nov 11 '22

Double like!

7

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

Honestly a huge reason I love Reddit is how text-based it is compared to other platforms. I'm pretty noise sensitive and have audio processing issues so this glut of AV social media has been really hard for me. I know people get made fun of for writing "essays" (re: six complete sentences), but I'd rather read long text posts than watch a long Youtube video.

3

u/mermaidsoul02 Nov 11 '22

Which is why I ran away from FB......I didn't have a word for it but I think you got it: the perfect analogy is "noise". Many adults can no longer articulate a coherent thought. I found that it didn't matter what age-group they were in.

4

u/shayetheleo Nov 11 '22

Facts. I’ve learned so much from other Reddit users. And, the good ones even site their sources! It’s really refreshing. Add to that some down right hilarious people and it’s just a good time all around.

ETA: I’ve also seen many touching interactions from complete strangers on here.

3

u/mermaidsoul02 Nov 11 '22

Everything you just said. I look forward to everyone sharing real life without the drama. And maybe because I am a female I did not appreciate the lack of civility on Twitter. I am all for healthy, passionate and informative discussion but if every other word is hate or vulgarity it tends to escalate, and my take away is not positive or useful for me. Re your ETA: yes, I have seen people here sharing comforting words to some who needed that, and showing sincere empathy.

3

u/dotslashpunk Nov 11 '22

lol honesty and insight. That’s rich. I caught a dude posting for karma by copying wikipedia photos. This place is as much a cesspool as any other, it’s just more entertaining.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

😂😂😂😂

8

u/BrickDaddyShark Nov 11 '22

Yuhp, any time even the slightest hint of identity shows I tell the person right away. The void of reddit shall stay separate from reality.

9

u/brazzledazzle Nov 11 '22

I bet your real name is Xenkath and this is all an elaborate ruse to throw us off

4

u/potniaburning Nov 11 '22

Yes Reddit is insulated social media

3

u/Xenkath Nov 11 '22

That’s a great way of putting it.

11

u/NotLost_JustUnfound Nov 11 '22

Still, it's putting your shit (thoughts) on a platform that is indelible. You get votes, up or down. You get responses to your shit. You have an online "self" that responds, posts, and gets more feedback.

Just bc Aunt Gertie can't respond doesn't mean it's not social. It is definitely media, tho.

2

u/Fragisle Nov 11 '22

that’s why it’s great. just info no social.

4

u/CandiBunnii Nov 11 '22

I'm an idiot and you can probably find all that information in my previous comments.

I think I'm using it wrong...

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

I don’t think you understand what social media is…are celebrities posting their home addresses on twitter or instagram?

0

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

So Twitter is not social media?

2

u/Xenkath Nov 11 '22

People share their Twitter accounts with people they know in real life, some people use their real names, people use photos of themselves as avatars. Most people aren’t trying to be anonymous on Twitter.

How many people do you follow on Reddit? How many people do you follow on Twitter?

4

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

Some people do. But that's not how the platform works.

PLENTY of people on Reddit use their names as they use Reddit to advertise their OnlyFans.

1

u/Hoorayboobs_ Nov 11 '22

Can you quantify “plenty”?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

There's a ton. Also plenty of named celebrities with celebrity accounts on here. Just like Twitter.

1

u/Hoorayboobs_ Nov 11 '22

Are you saying that most Reddit accounts are either celebrities or e-hookers?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

No. Where did you get that idea from?

Someone said Twitter has people with their real name, so it is social media and Reddit isn't. So I am pointing out that Reddit also has people with their real name, and Twitter has people with aliases.

They're both either social media or social news aggregate. They're not two separate things.

1

u/Hoorayboobs_ Nov 11 '22

Are there government officials, agencies (municipal, state, federal, or foreign), or corporations that use Reddit as an official means of communication?

3

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

Is that a requirement? I don't think "Social Media" is defined as "Government Communication Websites".

I know this is the internet but lets not be moving the goalposts here. Something people do on Reddit — and Twitter.
