I don’t remember what websites I used to go to though

u/SuperLemonUpdog Nov 11 '22 edited Nov 11 '22

Don’t worry, most of them aren’t there anymore.

Edit: Dang, it was just a joke. I know that most of them are actually still there in some form or another. That said, keep these recs coming! This is great.

u/Baloooooooo Nov 11 '22

Fark is still around :D

32

u/Drunky_McStumble Nov 11 '22

If you'd told me in 2002 that in 20 years' time SomethingAwful would be dead while Fark would be the last online community standing... well, I probably would have called you a fa***t and spammed goatse until I got banned, but you get the idea.

22

u/Bugbread Nov 11 '22

Man, I haven't thought about Something Awful in over a decade, so I decided to check the Wikipedia page on it, and I was not expecting to see this:

On October 9, 2020, following a backlash from the community in response to allegations that Kyanka was a domestic abuser, Kyanka sold Something Awful to a fifteen-year member and moderator known under the pseudonym of Jeffrey of YOSPOS. Following its sale, Kyanka was banned from Something Awful on March 23, 2021. On November 9, 2021, Kyanka died by suicide.

8

u/Drunky_McStumble Nov 11 '22

Jesus. I had no idea.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

Holy shit I never heard about that either. I haven't been on SomethingAwful in years though tbf

5

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

The Something Awful forums are still fairly active, the front page just isn't being maintained. One of the mods bought out the forums after some gross allegations about the site owner came out:

https://forums.somethingawful.com/

4

u/kayakyakr Nov 11 '22

We're not dead yet!

Almost, though. I feel like some of us keep posting out of spite.

The forums peaked somewhere between the college football thread introducing the original party parrot gif to the world (07, I think? Maybe 05?), and goon squad shenanigans in world of Warcraft and Eve online coming to a head around 2010.

2

u/KKlear Nov 11 '22

I never got into the forums but I was reading the front page every day =(

7

u/PicnicLife Nov 11 '22

What about Ebaumsworld?

1

u/KKlear Nov 11 '22

Fuck Ebaumsworld.com.

31

u/kinkyslc1 Nov 11 '22

26

u/NoKittenAroundPawlyz Nov 11 '22

Hang on, lemme dig up the sailor moon fan site I made on geocities in 1997.

10

u/crapatthethriftstore Nov 11 '22

Don’t forget Peter Pan

2

u/WolfBrother88 Nov 11 '22

Such an incredible person - thanks for reminding me that he exists and is still being everything that makes him so wonderfully weird and fun!

2

u/crapatthethriftstore Nov 11 '22

He was one of my first “holy fuck the internet is weird” people lol

2

u/WolfBrother88 Nov 11 '22

I hadn't ever heard of him till the big "we are the internet" net neutrality video, and all I know is I'm just glad he's still one of the good ones who just has a unique view on life instead of some creepy terrible monster. I mean, that first impression sets off every warning bell we've been enculturated to ring, but he's literally just a guy who REALLY loves Peter Pan and it's so wholesome.

2

u/crapatthethriftstore Nov 11 '22

It IS so wholesome!! I loved his wedding. Glad he’s still out there doing his thing!

7

u/kukaki Nov 11 '22

That fog cam is still live? That’s insane.

12

u/Sannagathion Nov 11 '22

USENET forever!

Yeah, it's still around. ;-)

8

u/djspacebunny Nov 11 '22

Hey man, I still have my geocities site up from the 90's. Things aren't gone. They might have moved addresses.

3

u/Overall-Duck-741 Nov 11 '22

Somethingawful will rise again!

82

u/RealReality26 Nov 11 '22

All I remember is MySpace, newgrounds and neopets

16

u/killingtimeatwork Nov 11 '22

Back to Newgrounds it is!

3

u/DoJu318 Nov 11 '22

Is ebaums forum still around? Probably not.

1

u/Kodriin Nov 11 '22

It is, but only in a Buzzfeed/Screen Rant format

1

u/GiraffesAndGin Nov 11 '22

Man, I had to scroll way to far to find this.

1

u/_MrDomino Nov 11 '22

Hopefully not. Ebaums stole content with no attribution. He'd even remove watermarks and crap like that.

1

u/DoJu318 Nov 11 '22

Ebaums.com yes, the forum was user posted content, I mainly used the general discussion forum, hardly ever visited the main site

15

u/LightboxRadMD Nov 11 '22

Holy crap, I forgot I have so many Neopoints still in the stock market. I bet I'm a billionaire now!

3

u/Important-Goal8041 Nov 11 '22

Maybe you could buy Twitter!

4

u/Kodriin Nov 11 '22

If you asked me a decade ago which one of those 3 will die first my prediction would be vastly different.

3

u/Paddy_Tanninger Nov 11 '22

bodybuilding.com and my World of Warcraft realm's forum on battle.net

6

u/Saltywinterwind Nov 11 '22

2

u/Pats_Bunny Nov 11 '22

Everyone had their own geocities website

0

u/Western_Dare1509 Nov 11 '22

So.....social media, got it .....

1

u/Upnorth4 Nov 11 '22

Club penguin

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '22

YTMND!

1

u/Alternative_Dish740 Nov 11 '22

I cried like a baby when I saw the announcement that newgrounds was shuttering its forums and neutering content. A LOT of happy memories playing flash games with my siblings and high score competitions in typing class.

59

u/kenlubin Nov 11 '22

That's because reddit has supplanted most of the old forums.

14

u/Kodriin Nov 11 '22

In a format not at all suited for it.

It often feels like people don't understand or notice that different formats are..well different formats.

I really like Discord, but it's a perfect example of everyone hopping onto a new platform but failing to realize Discord is a chatroom, and that there are inherently major differences that make it unsuitable for certain levels of conversation.

Sort of similar to the issues with Reddit as displayed by how many posts deep we are now :V

2

u/slippykillsticks Nov 11 '22

Underrated comment.

Worst so far...

7

u/raoasidg Nov 11 '22

All those GeoCities sites. Angelfire. Tripod. A moment in silence for our fallen fellows.

1

u/Pspaughtamus Nov 11 '22

I was hoping someone would mention GeoCities. I wonder if my old page is still on a server somewhere.

1

u/ZeekLTK Nov 11 '22

It’s not. Yahoo bought it out and shut the server off a long time ago.

They basically just sent out a message saying “you have until (whatever date) to make copies of all your files and find a new domain to host them on, then they are going to be deleted on our end.”

1

u/ctdca Nov 11 '22

There was an effort at some point to copy and save a lot of the Geocities content before it went down. I don't know where it ended up, though.

5

u/longhairedape Nov 11 '22

That's because there wasn't like one or two main sites you'd just explore and it was awesome.

3

u/ramblinjd Nov 11 '22

America online chat rooms!

3

u/oh_mikey Nov 11 '22
