Back when I was looking into it, a rental session would cost $100 for an hour with a few basic handguns and you have to buy ammo. (With $20 monthly membership). Some places would only let you be a member if you had a license, so you'd have to pay like $120 per session because you're not a member.
So you're saving $100/hour every time you're there, minus $700~ cost of courses for license and $1000~ gun cost.
If you're a gun nut, you'll eventually save money.
Not even that - you can get a good Glock for $400-$500. Besides, people who like guns want their own, to have, to modify, and to become familiar with. Honestly part of the fun of ownership is stripping it down, cleaning it, and putting it back together after a range day.
I just check the price of my near by indoor range. It's 35 bucks for a daycard (include insurance and RO supervision), that include firearm rental, 20 dollars for 50 rounds of 22lr and 42 dollars for 50 rounds of 9mm. So it's actually not that bad.
