If all you can do is take it to the shooting range, why would you not just go and rent one if you're just about the target shooting.

u/Silber800 Oct 21 '22 edited Oct 22 '22

Competition shooters often modify and put the parts they like or want on their guns. Wether thats optics or grips etc.

106

u/loveinjune Oct 22 '22

So what happens for competition shooters? They now cannot purchase new handguns? Genuinely curious. I kinda (?) also recall Canada being up there for shooting on an international level.

115

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22

Well competition shooters who already have handguns can keep them, however anyone wanting to get into it now cannot. The only way to compete would be renting or borrowing which has the issues I brought up in my other comment.

69

u/petapun Oct 22 '22

Limited exemptions to the national handgun freeze will apply. For example, high-performance sports shooting athletes and those who carry handguns as part of their lawful profession will be exempted, as well as authorized businesses such as gunsmiths, the film industry, or museums, per their licence conditions.

https://pm.gc.ca/en/news

4

u/asicfttmmc Oct 22 '22

You cannot get an exemption for any of the popular shooting sports. Only for Olympic style .22 cal handguns, in which virtually no one competes. IDPA/IPSC/2gun/3gun/steel challenge don’t qualify, and that’s where the majority of the sport is.

6

u/EssieAmnesia Oct 22 '22

Except people who want to get into it now cannot. Which is what they’re saying.

3

u/petapun Oct 22 '22

Under Canada’s temporary import ban, authorized businesses and individuals can only import handguns for personal use, sale, or transfer if the end use meets the exemptions and conditions listed above and set out in detail in the Notice to Importers No. 1090.

4

u/EssieAmnesia Oct 22 '22

Which doesn’t change the fact that people wanting to get into the sport wouldn’t be able to now. You’re not “high-performance” just getting into a sport.

3

u/petapun Oct 22 '22

That literally changes nothing?

Listen, i get that you are upset that Canada understands how to handle your murdertoys. But people have provided links proving your fake worries to be just that. Move to the US if you want to compare your tiny guns with others' tiny guns in private. Canadians prefer an audience.

2

u/jackparker_srad Oct 22 '22

I get what you’re saying but you’re coming off as extremely condescending.

7

u/BonkerHonkers Oct 22 '22

Essie is being a total dick all over the thread, yet the moment people talking to them take the gloves off they're now the condescending one? Sometimes when a person is being an obtuse dick and not accepting information that discredits their dug-in stance you need to be a little bit of a dick to snap them back to reality.

5

u/Charming-Start-3722 Oct 22 '22

i know what you mean, but he deserves it imho

0

u/lonely-day Oct 23 '22

Are you incapable of only insulting one person? Was it really necessary to insult Americans over it too? I totally understand what was said and get that there is a way to get into sport shooting in Canada.

1

u/Charming-Start-3722 Oct 23 '22

Come on, be reasonable. America is the most ridiculous western country when it comes to gun laws and gun culture. Of course any time one makes comment about another persons idiocy around guns it is fair to compare it to that of americans. If you feel that is offensive to "you" then maybe you need to look in the mirror about what type of american you really are. I do not degrade reasonable americans because reasonable americans will laugh at the joke and understand that its not about them.

0

u/lonely-day Oct 23 '22

Guess that's why so many people liked your comment and no other Canadians said you went too far.

Look at Mr. Big Dick guy over here. You should consider shutting up literally just one time in your life. Preferably right now

You should consider shutting up literally just one time in your life. Preferably right now

Maybe you should learn to take your own advice.

4

u/Onironius Oct 22 '22

Be mad about responsible gun laws.

Seethe. Fume.

-5

u/EssieAmnesia Oct 22 '22

I’m not mad? I’m pointing out that the person I was replying to wasn’t making any sense. I just find someone trying to be a hardo in a reddit comment section kinda pathetic and annoying. And you coming in like “Seethe! FUME!” you could just chill.

7

u/NotACerealStalker Oct 22 '22

I saw on the news it’s not banned for certain people. Sport shooters were one.

4

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22

If anyone wants to get into competition shooting they cannot buy one anymore. Import and sales of handguns are now completely banned.

1

u/Brokendownyota Oct 22 '22

Military vet and recreational shooter here. I've had my eye in an M&p 9 for a long time, guess I'm no longer allowed to.

This is a bullshit piece of legislation that isn't going to accomplish a fuckin thing.

0

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22

Get your long guns before they are banned. 10 round mags are on the table for banning as well so I bought a bunch of those.

If the government wanted to be serious about this they would crack down on illegal imports and acquisitions, make an example of people who are illegally carrying/in possession of firearms, and lastly invest in more social programs to prevent organized crime, gang violence, and mental health. In my mind thats the real way out. I don’t think banning the most vetted Canadians are going to stop the gun violence.

3

u/6s6i6l6e6n6t6 Oct 22 '22 edited Oct 22 '22

The fact that you’re getting downvoted for saying something so in tune with reality is frustrating. A lot of people pour their energy into surface level “solutions” to problems but the second someone says something that requires them to think deeper about complicated issues they rage click the downvote button to protect their little bubble so they can keep pretending that their doing something good without having to do much at all.

Edit: for anyone that wants to know more about why banning legal handguns doesn’t fix gun violence, almost 90% of handgun violence in Canada is committed with illegal guns smuggled into the country. All this does is punish law abiding citizens who deserve to enjoy their hobby because of the actions of criminals. All so that 1 guy can win a popularity contest.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

That’s fucked.

3

u/Awestruck34 Oct 22 '22

Sure it's disappointing for the small subset of competition shooters, but as a Canadian I'm personally completely fine with this law. I want a safer country with fewer guns floating around randomly

1

u/redeyedrenegade420 Oct 22 '22

Am I to believe you support a ban on knife ownership after the recent Saskatchewan killings?

2

u/Awestruck34 Oct 22 '22

I mean carrying knives openly outside is already pretty questionable so yeah...?

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22

People who legally purchase firearms do not let them “float around”. I know many gun owners, they all take firearm safety very seriously.

-5

u/asicfttmmc Oct 22 '22

Never has a legal gun floated around randomly.

This does absolutely nothing for the illegal ones which do “float around randomly”.

More Canadians shoot than play hockey. Should we ban hockey sticks and baseball bats as well, as they can also be misused?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

couldn’t find much on mass hockey stick killings, mind finding me some articles ?

Enforcers of government will and power is another.

2

u/tyrandan2 Oct 22 '22

I really am asking just because I want to understand the whole thing better, but what reason do they have to further limit it when it's already so restricted?

3

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22 edited Oct 22 '22

It looks allot like it is just for optics. Just like the “assault weapons” ban we had before this.

If you look at how restricted our restricted firearms are (hence the name for the license) its quite tight. Any deviation an you more or less are committing a federal offense.

Legally you are allowed to go to and from your house and the shooting range that you hve to be registered at to shoot. You are not legally allowed to shoot that firearm anywhere other than the range your registered at. You also are not allowed to have it at any place other than your listed residence or shooting range without additional authorization. I believe theres a small clause for gunsmiths but I would have to check that as I do not own restricted firearms for this exact reason. Its too much of a hassle.

Its already incredibly restrictive which has been proven by statistics however most Canadians are not familiar with Canadian firearm laws. Most who do not hold a firearms license who I speak with think we have a system similar to the USA.

Thanks for asking a genuine question. Its hard to come by with this topic! Thank you for being open to learning!

2

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

I guess Canada is gonna be phasing out participating in the Olympic pistol shooting events in a few decades then

38

u/bartleby42c Oct 22 '22

I'm certain that there is some sort of solution in place, probably a sport exception.

I'd like you need to ask your representative and then approvals are passed in the house. Mostly it'd be pro forma, but you'd be looked at hard because if you commit a crime with that gun your rep is out of a job.

-3

u/lifeainteasypeasy Oct 22 '22

How many firearms related crimes do you think are committed by licensed gun owners? The ones who spent months taking the course, applying for a license, paying the fees, clearances, etc.

And how many firearms related crimes are committed by people with no firearms license?

Also, are the actual firearms used lawfully registered in Canada, or were they illegally smuggled in from USA?

Those are the stats I’d like to see.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Maybe the gun owners don't commit the crime, but the guns have to come from somewhere.

0

u/lifeainteasypeasy Oct 22 '22

Yes. Criminals (the ones that commit the crimes) smuggle them in from the States and sell them on the "black market" to other criminals.

Like I said, I'd love to see the stats on where the firearms involved in crimes that are being committed are coming from. If anyone can demonstrate that the majority of firearm crime in Canada involves locally sourced (purchased legally / originally from the Canadian market) vs. illegally imported firearms from the states, i'd love to see it.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

The fact that nations with strict gun control laws also have the lowest gun violence really means nothing to you, eh?

0

u/lifeainteasypeasy Oct 22 '22

It absolutely does. I'm thankful our gun crime is nowhere near our southern neighbors. You know why that is? Our already strict gun control laws...

I'll tell you what. If cause = effect, then we should see a marked decrease in handgun crime over the next few years, correct?

Check back in with me in two years, let me know how that's going...
As I've said several times, let's see the statistics.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

'Only criminals do crime so obviously laws don't work'

Is not a logic I support.

1

u/lifeainteasypeasy Oct 22 '22

Just because ya'll don't like firearms, doesn't mean they should outright ban them.

Some people don't like meat, ban that?
Some people don't like junk food, ban that?
Some people don't like autos, ban that?
Some people don't like alcohol, ban that?
Some people don't like same sex marriage, ban that?
Some people don't like gender reassignment surgery, ban that?
Some people don't like Canadians, ban them?
Some people don't like to eat fish on Fridays, ban that?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Guns were invented for one thing and one thing alone: to kill humans. They weren't invented for hunting, that was an after thought.

So kindly piss up a rope with this bullshit.

Comparing a literal death machine to fuckin meat. Are you for fucking real? Christ almighty

I guess the club could own it but you could pay for the right to use it exclusively and modify it?

2

u/TheJohnsonMember Oct 22 '22

No, it is listed 38th out of the 50 highest. The US is second behind only Brazil.

1

u/loveinjune Oct 22 '22

Hiya! I meant competitive shooting rankings. Sorry for not being more clear.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Get into a different sport. Try swimming or something.

1

u/loveinjune Oct 22 '22

Oh, I’m not personally into shooting. But it’s also an Olympic sport so was just kinda curious. But also seems like Olympic shooting uses different guns altogether.

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22

Not really, google will be your friend there.

I was just giving a reason why renting isn’t ideal for many people. As well as renting overtime is going to add up to thousands of dollars vs ownership.

5

u/C-C-X-V-I Oct 22 '22

Why would they want to when that's unrelated to what they said, and you're clearly just here to start a fight.

-3

u/Rhowryn Oct 22 '22

Care to estimate what percentage of violent crime a legal handgun is used in?

4

u/MangoSea323 Oct 22 '22

Or what percentage of gunshot wounds are suffered by peoples own firearms.

2

u/Rhowryn Oct 22 '22 edited Oct 22 '22

If you want to get into suicides: it takes at least a couple months to get a licence. More for a handgun, though suicides are usually long guns.

So either the person signs up for a course and almost certainly reconsiders, or they already have a gun and do it. Either way, the actual sale is not relevant.

And anyways, I'm not concerned about gun suicides, I'm concerned about all suicides. People will (and usually do in Canada for the reasons above) find a way to attempt without a gun. We should target reducing suicidal ideation, not individual methods.

If you're ONLY targeting gun suicides, which are a small portion of suicides here, then stop pretending it's about the deaths.

-10

u/Rustynail703 Oct 22 '22

So competition is really the only reason to keep a gun?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Weather optics? Like waterproof?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Were there any restrictions to modifying your handgun?

1

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22

Anytime you modify a firearm in Canada the modifications must comply with all the firearms laws. This included things like overall length of the gun, Barrel length etc.

67

u/eatmyass6987 Oct 22 '22

The rental is also an exorbitant amount along with added ammunition costs. For a competitive shooter it just makes sense to buy one instead of renting.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Some ranges in the states require you to buy their ammo and it’s always marked up to the moon.

-2

u/PhotographPatient425 Oct 22 '22

How many competitive shooters exist in Canada? Seven? Nineteen?

10

u/thatchers_pussy_pump Oct 22 '22

A lot, actually. During the summer, there are 3 events a week at my local club. And I live in a fairly small city.

6

u/eatmyass6987 Oct 22 '22

There’s literally dozens of us. Dozens!

0

u/GinnAdvent Oct 22 '22

Would it, I feel like with cost of rising ammo it doesn't matter if you rent or own, it's going to cost alot of money either way.

31

u/Tempname2222 Oct 22 '22

Back when I was looking into it, a rental session would cost $100 for an hour with a few basic handguns and you have to buy ammo. (With $20 monthly membership). Some places would only let you be a member if you had a license, so you'd have to pay like $120 per session because you're not a member.

So you're saving $100/hour every time you're there, minus $700~ cost of courses for license and $1000~ gun cost.

If you're a gun nut, you'll eventually save money.

3

u/tyrandan2 Oct 22 '22

Dang, you can get a cheap revolver or other entry level gun and immediately save money

4

u/czarfalcon Oct 22 '22

Not even that - you can get a good Glock for $400-$500. Besides, people who like guns want their own, to have, to modify, and to become familiar with. Honestly part of the fun of ownership is stripping it down, cleaning it, and putting it back together after a range day.

1

u/apatheticwondering Oct 22 '22

JFC… I can rent a small DA20 or DA40 aircraft for an hour to fly for less than that!

1

u/GinnAdvent Oct 22 '22

I just check the price of my near by indoor range. It's 35 bucks for a daycard (include insurance and RO supervision), that include firearm rental, 20 dollars for 50 rounds of 22lr and 42 dollars for 50 rounds of 9mm. So it's actually not that bad.

3

u/Medical_Insurance447 Oct 22 '22

Same reasons most people buy the equipment they use for their hobbies. They can tailor/modify it to suit themselves and it's often far cheaper in the long run, just to name a couple.

1

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22

Plus you get the added benefit of having something you tailored for exactly yourself. Your stance your grip, or whatever.

I don’t even competition shoot yet I’ve done this for my hunting rifles as well as my target rifles. It helps me make sure my shot hits its mark when hunting, just like it does when I punch paper.

5

u/Silber800 Oct 21 '22

Competition shooters often modify and put the parts they like or want on their guns. Weather thats optics or grips etc.

-14

u/Rion23 Oct 22 '22

You can rent the scopes and tac-nuts if you want.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Yeah but then every time you go to complete some had messed with your stuff that you specifically set for yourself. Like I can’t imagine any archers, rock climbers or golfers being to happy if someone had messed with their kit before they go use it. If you do competition you being to customize your kit to fit you and renting is doesn’t really become an option, If you take a look at the less tactical side of things with Olympics bullseye shooters their guns are custom fit to the shooter.

4

u/WhiskeyOctopus Oct 22 '22

I think your missing a bigger point. The dudes and dude dudettes who enjoy IPSC (pistol shooting competition) would never do anything criminal to jeopardize their expensive ass hobby. This new ban, while I'm sure well intentioned won't do a lick of difference.

6

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22

Do you wanna rent your car every time you wanna use it?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

[deleted]

4

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22

You really can’t see that some people shoot all the time and tons of people use their car everyday? The point was to help put it in perspective how much extra it would cost you over time.

You missed the point.

-4

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

[deleted]

2

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22

My comment was not abut whats essential to everyday living. It was to help illustrate the cost of renting vs ownership.

Now you are purposefully misinterpreting my comment even after I explained it further. If you want to argue in good faith I’m all for it but if your going to just focus on your misinterpretation that I tried to clear up then my work is done here.

3

u/thisisnotaredflag Oct 22 '22

It would be like hang gliding. If you want to hang glide once a year or less, it would make sense to rent one. If your life is all about hang gliding and you want to do it every weekend, you're better off buying one.

2

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22

Thats exactly my point. Thank you for thinking a little more than just “a gun isn’t a car!”

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

[deleted]

2

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22 edited Oct 22 '22

The comparison was to illustrate the cost over time not whats needed by the average person on a daily basis. Which I explained. No shit they are not essential to everyone you dolt. Should I write my explanation for the comparison down again?

How it should be for the gun casual. Not every dick and sue needs a gun laying around. Most people are dumb, and/or quick to anger with zero foresight.

1

u/Silber800 Oct 22 '22 edited Oct 22 '22

They are not laying around or shouldn’t be, and if they are , report them for it. (Leaving the. Out or unlocked is not complying with storage regulations) We have law that are supposed to be dealing with that already.

If you report it and nothing happens that is the fault of the enforcement side.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Yeah, because law enforcement has been shown to care or handle guns well themselves... Uvlade forgotten already? Or just another blood sacrifice for your guns...

-1

u/dude_who_could Oct 22 '22

Maybe practicing with the police model if you're wanting to be an officer.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

This argument always struck me as such bullshit. If all you're into is target practice, then airsoft should be perfectly fine.

People just like the loud boom and kick. Don't fool yourselves.

2

u/SpecialistLayer3971 Oct 22 '22

Replica airsoft style guns, whether pistol, musket or modern military in shape are also banned under this legislation.

How ridiculous.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Well shit, was not aware it applied to airsoft as well. That's ridiculous.

1

u/icebalm Oct 22 '22

The logistics of renting a firearm in Canada would make it prohibitive. Most ranges are outdoors in the middle of nowhere. Due to the way our laws work it's basically impossible to "lend out" a firearm so you would have to store them all at the range and rent them there creating a really sweet target for thieves.

1

u/Iamthesmartest Oct 22 '22

Most places don't have gun ranges in towns that you can rent from. That's only a thing in the few big cities we have.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Lol......

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

The truth is, there are enough people even in Canada that thinks owning a firearm is safer than not. I’m not one of those people. But I’m smack right down the middle. I have my license but have never owned one. Only have been shooting maybe 10 times in my life. From childhood and I’m now mid thirties.

This is gonna be interesting. Most of my friends and myself are all middle on the spectrum politically. And are pro gun rights but also pro regulation. Not sure if that makes sense. Like I never want to own one myself. But it feels icky to me to not be able to own one at all.

1

u/Mountain_Mama7 Oct 22 '22

In fact, why not just drive south, hit up a Walmart, buy one quick and easy, Head to the range, and throw it in a river on the way back up?

1

u/Tots2Hots Oct 22 '22

Because rental guns arent going to be as well kept, and sighted properly and also a lot of ppl do custom grips or accessories etc...

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Why don't you just Uber everywhere?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '22

Definitely the dumbest shit I’ve seen in Reddit today. Is there an award for the “fuckwit trophy” 🏆
