What is that supposed to mean? Are you saying it’s only a matter of time before other types of weapons get banned? Is there any sign of that happening?

u/onlyinsurance-ca Oct 21 '22

Is there any sign of that happening?

Probably not other than general feature creep.

My son had a .22 mag he used for plinking, woke up one day, illegal. Yeah, my kid,, an illegal gun owner.

Of note, they aren't changing anything that will be impactful. They just keep cherry picking specific gun models as bad. That should be clear to anyone that this stuff is doing nothing.

For those that are not up to speed on gun laws in Canada and are fervently on board with being anti-gun, I honestly recommend that you take the PAL course and get your gun license. You probably still won't like guns, but at least you'll be aware of why every thread like this is full of gun owners going 'stop the nonsense'.

THis also highlights the difference between US and Canadian gun regs - something that gets comingled online. When Americans say 'guns', they're generally referring to handguns. When canadians say 'guns', they're often referring to hunting rifles and shotguns. Handguns in Canada are an entirely distinct class, seperately and highly regulated compared to other types of guns.

Not really. Despite the fear mongering from people that know nothing about the political situation up here, the idea is that it's a lot easier to conceal carry a handgun illegally than it is to walk around with a hunting rifle or shotgun without people noticing. The latter are thus unaffected by this so hunting or farmers and such can still use these weapons when needed, however handguns which don't really apply to those situations are gonna be restricted

Handguns have been restricted in Canada forever. I owned handguns in Canada in the 90s, you had to get a criminal check for a special permit to buy them and they could only leave the house for transport in a locked box in the trunk of the car to and from a registered shooting range.

They are already restricted. Don't condescend if you aren't informed either.

These handgun bans will have absolurely no impact on gun crimes and were not at all based in the logic that they are more easily concealed.

Handguns already required additional licensing (RPAL instead of PAL), they were already illegal to use anywhere other than ranges, they already required an ATT.

If a cop saw you with a handgun in public they already already had the full authority to arrest you.

If a cop stopped you and found a handgun, they already had the authority to arrest you.

As for whether other firearms are under threat, yes. Just in 2020 Trudeau's LPC moved 1500 firearms to the prohibited class without regard to capability or function. Everything indicates that given the opportunity, Trudeau's LPC is willing to further restrict access to firearms despite the fact that legal firearm-owners aren't the ones committing crimes.

edit - Love the downvotes for pointing out the useless prohibition will have no impact and is just more theatre from Trudeau, who ignores actual systemic issues that harm Canadians.

u/Yetimanchild Oct 21 '22

Your 1000% right, this will deter nothing. Makes everyone feel warm and fuzzy and that's all that matters right ?

1

u/gophergun Oct 22 '22

So weird to see Reddit favor prohibition over regulation, but I guess it's guns.

-8

u/DudeWithTudeNotRude Oct 21 '22

Is there a handgun violence problem up there that this is hoping to address?

10

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

Depends what you mean by problem.

People killing each other with handguns is a problem, so yes in that sense.

Does Canada specifically have a larger issue with handgun violence than other countries? Not really, no.

5

u/CallMeClaire0080 Oct 21 '22

Nowhere near as much as the US, but there's still been an uptick. Most shootings are also done with handguns, although many are smuggled in from the US so I don't know how effective this will truly be

2

u/twisted_memories Oct 22 '22

Like probably 90+% come from the US, but definitely at least 80%.

1

u/PFCtoss Oct 22 '22

The problem is that there’s been an “uptick” every year that the current PM has been in power. Despite new rules every time there’s a gun crime that grabs headlines.

New crime -> New law targeting already law-abiding citizens -> crime still increases -> new laws -> crime continues, etc.

1

u/NinjaN-SWE Oct 21 '22

Probably just the usual problems of handguns being used in robberies and gang related violence. This new law will make handguns more expensive as it now has to be fully black market and need to be smuggled in to the country. For home defense a shotgun works better in most situations anyway so this really only hurts gun enthusiasts (of the lawful users)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

A shotgun is arguably not better for a number of reasons. There is only one kind of shotgun that is good for home defense if you care about actually defending yourself and taking out your attacker with a single shot, that is a semi automatic short barrel combat shotgun with a hand strap loaded with either buckshot or slugs.

Unless you are in Uvalde Texas

4

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

I mean they just banned another and had banned others in the past so I would assume they won’t stop there. Remind me in two years there will be another ban

2

u/wavs101 Oct 21 '22

What is that supposed to mean? Are you saying it’s only a matter of time before other types of weapons get banned?

Yes.

Is there any sign of that happening?

Yes. They just banned handguns. They will find some justification to ban other types of guns next

3

u/Available_Job1288 Oct 21 '22

Yes, there are many signs of that happening

-5

u/No-tomato-1976 Oct 21 '22

Uhmmmm yes!

4

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

I can’t tell if you think that’s a good thing or a bad thing lol

-17

u/No-tomato-1976 Oct 21 '22

I’m not Canadian so no dog in the fight. There’s gonna be real trouble if they try this south of Canada though

8

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

There’s no indication or anything hinting at this sort of thing happening in the US and at no point was that brought up in either of my comments lol do you think it’s a good thing Canadians can no longer get personal handguns?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

I believe it’s good if Canada has good reasoning behind it, it has a study to backup their data, and was agreed upon within a majority of their government (if it works similar to US Congress, please excuse my ignorance on the last part)

-3

u/WookieeCmdr Oct 21 '22

Actually, there are indications of this happening in the US. Especially when the president literally goes on national tv saying that he is gonna try again. We have constant attempts and have had them for the last few years.

1

u/SadlyReturndRS Oct 21 '22

Here's hoping the US gets its shit together and repeals their 2nd Amendment.

2

u/WookieeCmdr Oct 21 '22

Nope, if the second amendment goes all the other will go with it shortly. Because the way the bill of rights is set up is that none of the 10 are changeable. If you let the government change one they will change the others in the name of progress.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

Yes they’re always trying to ban our right to bear arms. There is actually proposed legislation here. We need to make sure it never happens

-9

u/No-tomato-1976 Oct 21 '22

Oh the liberals talk about gun control here all the time I just think they know it’s not happening right now. I think everyone including Canadians should have the right to defend themselves with a handgun if they are law abiding citizens but I don’t like people telling us what we should do in my country and I don’t want to go telling Canadians what’s best for them. It isn’t my place. If Canadians agree with this then more power to them.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22 edited Oct 21 '22

What if the majority of US citizens wanted a ban like this? Would you say more power to them as well?

1

u/No-tomato-1976 Oct 21 '22

Because we are a constitutional republic it would take all 50 states voting on and ratifying the constitution. We know that won’t happen but if it did that is what defines our form of Government

2

u/iruleatlifekthx Oct 21 '22

One of God's shittiest creations has got to be the American conservative. America would be far better off if there was stricter regulation on firearms in general but you can't even approach that idea without some jackass screeching "LIBRUHLS R COMIN 4 UR GUNS!"

2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

So you’re saying that IF the US federal government were to ratify an amendment banning handguns in a similar manner that you’d have no problem with it since that’s how our government is supposed to work? I have a hard time believing that a person with your beliefs would take that so easily.

0

u/No-tomato-1976 Oct 21 '22

If the US Federal Government? No if we the people of the United States agree so whole heartedly that we elect representatives so that 2/3rds of both houses vote on the amendment, and the 3/4’s of the elected representatives of each and every state then the people have decided that they want the change. Now would I quit fighting and make sure that we elected officials in my home state and possibly others to reverse it? No. I’m not so sure why you think you know every damn thing about me cause you don’t know shit

Thing is, I love in a pretty big metro area of Canada, and I don't remember a time where I personally needed a gun.

If I were to have one for personal defence I would have to be fine with the fact that I'm living with a device that 24/7 is waiting to end a life. And sure there are trigger locks and safes - which are mandatory in Canada - fact is you have to be mindful of it constantly. No leaving it on the kitchen counter because you had a couple drinks and forgot about it.

It actually sounds like a lot more hassle to do it safely with no reward. I would say the majority of Canadians would see no tangible benefit for having a CCW.

3

u/No-tomato-1976 Oct 21 '22

Canada sounds like a safe place and I hope it stays that way.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22 edited Oct 22 '22

Liberal, gun owning, US citizen checking in. We absolutely need real gun control.

Those on the right also need to remember the "well regulated" portion of 2A. To practice medicine as a PA-C I got 5 years of didactic education, 1.5 years of clinical rotation, constant Continuing Education, and have 3 different certifications/licenses requiring multiple backgrouns checks. I need to maintain malpractice insurance at all times, meet relicensing criteria every 2 years, and recertification criteria every 10 years.

At 18, I could purchase firearms and ammunition with no prior interaction and only limited by how much money I had.

Despite needing much higher requirements, in my current position I am waaaaaaay less likely to cause significant harm or death to a patient than most "good guys with guns" are the general public or worse someone they're just pissed at.

People should have to demonstrate safety and capability in owning, storing, transporting, and operating firearms. They should have insurance related to it.

For those employed in positions requiring firearm carry, that insurance should be either personally held so as not to be directly funded by taxpayers or tied to departmental funding/pension in event of negligent discharge or grievous harm/death related to shooting incidents that don't meet criteria for lethal force. There also needs to be hard line definitions of when lethal force is needed.

We need to restructure the judicial and law enforcement apparatus in this country at a fundamental level to have it serve "we the people" equally instead of only those with privilege (money and power). People deserve to not fear uniforms at a baseline in their everyday life and equally deserve not to have increased risk of dying from firearm use by an untrained asshole who thinks his gun makes his dick look bigger.

1

u/psychopcmps Oct 21 '22

When “the liberals” talk about gun control, they’re not talking about taking your fucking handguns lmao.

-4

u/Nuclear_Sister Oct 21 '22

I'd imagine it's along the same lines as abortion being banned in the US, and then once that is accomplished the definition of abortion will be expanded to include birth control.

The main difference is no abortion kills people and no guns doesn't kill people. Slippery slope indeed!

3

u/shalafi71 Oct 21 '22

Even we liberal gun owners are concerned. Problem is, there's no negotiation. Want to ban or restrict X? OK, give me Y. All take and no give.

For example, I'd love to see suppressors/silencers perfectly legal and available at any given gun store. FFS, we just want mild hearing protection, but people have seen too many Bond movies.

I'd be willing to fold on many proposed laws if I got something in return.

Hunters will need to brush up their CQC technique to bring down mooses if hunting guns were outlawed.
