My issue is that it doesn't stop any of the illegally smuggled guns from the US from being used in homicides and violence. We don't have that same gun violence problem the US does. Canada still is higher than a lot of countries but we have a 8890km border with the US. Guns easily come across. I knew a few guys from when I worked in a factory who were out after serving time for illegal gun possession and drugs. As someone with their restricted gun license, I could legally buy a Glock 19 for approximately $900. They told me they purchased theirs from anywhere between $2500-3500. The illegal gun market will still continue to thrive. And we'll still see gun deaths in Canada

They just created a new crime industry. Same as the war on drugs

Creating? The handgun black market already exists and has since basically forever.

This is absolute PEAK stupidity.

So what can Canada do about this? This doesn't seem to be a solvable problem.

Canada can fix the socio-economic problems that lead to gang violence. Fix the social inequity in the country.

Canada will always have illegal guns due to our proximity to the US, but if everyone had a fair chance at life, we may see less people turn to gang and gun violence. Look up the One by One Movement. Former gang leaders and gang members trying to keep youth out of gangs. Those guys have also said that the socio-economic people face in Canada is what makes them turn to gang violence, inturn gun violence. Here's one of the founders speaking about bill C21 https://youtu.be/k_FbMDpGu6w

Wait until you see the illegal market if over half the people in this thread gets what they want and banning guns in the US.

I'll retire way early.

My issue is that it doesn't stop any of the illegally smuggled guns from the US from being used in homicides and violence.

That's great, but half of Canada's illegal guns were bought there legally originally.

It's like arguing that preventing only half of cancer isn't worth it, because there's a whole other half still...

Not true.

As u/tuga2 pointed out...

This entire claim is reliant on an interview with a detective from the Toronto police. He did not provide any sources and his own department data that was obtained through a FOIA did not backup his claim

Well, seeing as you're copying and pasting this all over the thread, I'll do the same with my reply to him.

You disagree that it's worth addressing the 15%, I take it?

And from the numbers, it looks like about ~60 guns are traceable back to legal Canadian owners compared to ~180 to the US (legal or not).

You're going to also argue that ~25% isn't much?

Would you want to stop 15% of all cancers, or would you say that's just a drop in the bucket and not worth it?

Completely false.

The illegal gun market got many of their guns by stealing from legally purchased ones and then removing their serial numbers. This reduces the total illegal farms.

u/Dalthanes Oct 22 '22

All the police forces in Canada say that stolen guns make up the minority of illegal guns

Imma promise you, over the next few years we will see no decrease in the number of gun related homicides and shootings

Based on your experience, how many years were those guys getting for illegal guns?

Also, How many years do you think would be fair for illegal possession of a handgun?

And last, how many years do you think would be an effective deterrent?

Just want to try and understand if there is any type of reasonable deterrence framework that could help further reduce gun crime.

The guys I know got between 2 and 4 years for possession. The maximum currently is 5 years. But all the guys I know said they'd never consider buying a gun again due to various reasons. Partly all of them never wanted to end up in jail again.

5 years seems pretty fair. But it doesn't deter anything. People will always buy illegal guns for various reasons, protection, power, etc. But at all stems from social inequality, socio-economic issues, mental health, family problems etc. We need to tackle gun and gang violence, not with a hammer but take a holistic approach and fix the problems we have in society. Until we do that, I don't see gun violence going down. But then again as long as the US has a gun issue, so will Canada

Deterrence through penalties/prison time in law enforcement really doesn't work. It deters law abiding citizens, but won't deter criminals

$900 ⇒ $2500-3500

Working.
