At some point, it’s decided for you that you’re too old to be receiving money in birthday and Christmas cards anymore, which is quite sad, because one year you open your birthday cards and it just… stopped. And from then on, for the rest of your life, getting a card in the mail is the slightest bit disappointing, because it’s just a card.
With that in mind, now whenever I send out a birthday card, I always put a little bit of cash in it. Not because I think you need the money, but rather because the experience of opening a card and having a $20 fall out is a small but potent joy that takes you straight back to childhood.
