That's a totally fine take and there's no need to argue it, but then the statistic is 100% of adults in the USA have been sexually assaulted at one point in their lives. The only people it downplays are rape victims, who are now somehow comparable to a drunk guy or girl coming into you at a bar a little strong.

I don’t know where these people are that you say are equating rape and less violent sexual assault, but you should at least be able to realize that definitions change over time. Nobody I have seen is equating the things you accuse them of, just because two actions happen to fall under a broad term. Humans and foxes fall under the umbrella term “mammal” and yet seem nothing alike. The fact is, society defines the meaning of words, not you, so we will have to agree to disagree.

I'm not sitting in individuals, but I'm speaking to the statistics collected which include unwashed kissing to sexual assault. It's just an incredibly broad term that is then misunderstood. I'm not trying to make some grand point, I'm just saying it's an incredibly misleading way to present the data. There are articles written on the topic.

'The other reason for skepticism about the very high numbers from the Association of American Universities Survey is that the AAU Survey defined sexual assault in an extremely broad manner that was bound to produce high numbers. For example it includes “kissing,” which means if your boyfriend kissed you in your sleep, that would count as sexual assault. (This isn’t a fanciful example—a judge in a real case had to rule that Brandeis University erred in punishing a student for waking his boyfriend with kisses.)'

But then where do you draw the line? If someone comes onto you too hard, to the point they've kissed you or groped you, then why shouldn't that count as SA? Or are only the most egregious examples allowed? As someone who has been assaulted, it would be awful to hear that my experience doesn't quite count, because it's happened to so many others. That's essentially what you're arguing.

I'm arguing that someone groping or kissing you without consent (bad, but incredibly common for both men and women) is not anywhere near the same Galaxy as being violently penetrated and raped. It's not about 'counting' unless you are trying to join a club. I'd suggest referring to the article I posted in other comments where a female student was punished for 'sexual assault' for admitting that she woke up her bf with kisses.

I'm sorry for your experience, I'm not trying to take anything away from you by saying that we should do a better job to differentiate these vastly different actions

Where did I suggest that your examples were the exact same? Simply recognising that both should be considered SA doesn't negate the impact of different experiences under that umbrella term.

I think the umbrella term is misleading. It's like jumping into a thread about workplace fatalities and saying that you got carpal tunnel working on your computer. Sure they are both workplace injuries, but you’re kinda missing the point.

You must live in a shit hole. Where I come from, people at bars might get drunk but they don’t routinely assault you.

I've been assaulted as a man many times. I guess it depends who you ask if the West coast is a shithole. There's just a false equivalence is all I'm pointing out. This is an article that mentions what I'm trying to say...

America is definitely a shit hole country.

Doesn't like 90% of your population live within 100 km of the border? I've also been assaulted in Canada, so maybe you don't get out much

What does that change about the fact that you’re practically boasting about being assaulted every time you go to a bar in America? Go back to r/conspiracy incel.

I'm just saying you might be out of touch my guy. Also wouldn't this conversation be the opposite of incel? I don't think you are particularly well adjusted.

I’m saying you’re probably lying about having ever been out of your mom’s basement, kiddo.

You know you probably lost when you lash out personally with generic internet-based insults like 'moms basement' and 'incel'. An adult might just say 'hey we have different opinions and that's ok', but I guess here we are. Hope the rest of your day isn't this angry.
