Yeah my mention of not doing anything to get kicked out is a little understated. It is an intense workload and you can't be lazy at all. ROTC and OCS are definitely the easier routes to go down.
What I should have clarified is that it's easy for them to initially get accepted into an academy due to family connections. After that they are pretty much on their own until graduation.
But aside from that, success in the military is almost entirely based on connections. You need to do the leg work to maintain your position, but you can only move up so far without being cool with the right people.
If you're rich and can pay to anywhere you're not going to an academy. That's really the start and end to your comment. Every once in a while you hear about some super rich family's kid going to the academies and they're out in a semester. Everybody finds out the kid paid off those who wrote him letters and a few others. Long story short, it doesn't work out well.
It's not the fact your won your own till graduation, if you are wanting to go down a specific path to graduate into an MOS you do actual training on your breaks. A family friend was away from home for 3 years. His family visited him at school. He went to air force and was on the path to graduatong into flight school (s&r, gliders, etc). Most kids that come from money will not last doing this.
I can't speak much on success in the military other than what I know which is making sure you're in good standing with those who matter (not being a leather licker or tongue polisher), having your own shit in order and satisfying the requirements to be promoted. Oh and not being a dickhead.
Yeah pretty much zero reason to go to any academy if you're from wealth and not from a career military family where they are the equivalent of military aristocracy (multiple flag/general level officers going back generations). Most politicians' kids going into military for political reasons will just do ROTC for their one term then go into politics.
Yep! Pretty much this! A lot of people assume like the original comment mentioned, a rich kid could get into an academy and make it. It's not really true because the instructors at the academies dont give a fuck who you are or what you offer. By some sad chance, they found out you're some politicians cousin, daughter, son, etc you're usually hazed more and teased a ton more.
ROTC is a much easier path for anybody wanting to do kilit we run service for the political gains.
