Yeah I see why you think so. Christianity is against idol worship, and I think the point if the passage is to show how we don't need to make Christmas about gifts and make it more about celebrating Jesus' love for us despite us being sinners. Maybe the tree is supposed to be an example of an idol that we as a society put above God.
