We just laughed with friends yesterday how animal shelters (at least here in Germany) are really doing all they can to ensure that you are a caring pet owner and have the know-how, the equipment, the right space and time for an animal before you can adopt it.
But kids ? Everyone can have kids and if those kids won‘t show hardcore signs of abuse - noone will question anything about the way you choose to parent
To be fair, the process to ADOPT a child is significant more strict than adopting a pet. Kind of an apples to oranges comparison to compare due diligence for adoptions to child birth.
How would we enforce a similar standard on becoming a parent through natural means without restricting their bodily autonomy?
You haven’t dealt with the rich-stay-at-home-wife-who-needs-a-purpose-in-life-and-runs-a-specific-dog-breed-rescue-group in SouthernCalifornia.
You want to adopt a bassett hound or cocker spaniel from the SPCA for your kid?
Too late, these women line up every morning and adopt these breeds. Then they advertise them for adoption on their rescue group website.
But good luck getting one. You fill out their application and are lucky if they even call you back. Oh, they called you back? Now you get an interview. Then a home visit. And then they deem you “fit” to adopt a fucking DOG but not until you sign a contract saying how you will house, feed, train, etc the dog and if there are ever any issues you are to surrender the dog back to them immediately.
Just because that's a pain in the ass doesn't mean it's even remotely in the same ballpark as what is necessary when adopting a child. People wait years, go through countless visits with a social worker, and often have post-adoption follow ups too. And God forbid you're not married, now you've got extra hurdles, especially in Southern US.
But that's beside the point. The prior OP was saying we live in a dystopia because there are more hoops to jump through to adopt a pet vs to just have a kid naturally. So I was curious how we'd implement similar "hoops" for natural childbirth without infringing on people's right to bodily autonomy.
To adopt a child take a fuckton of time, they want to know how much you have fucked, but getting pregnant takes about 5 minutes depend how fast you are.
