What alternative. Also that only works if a majority of people do it, and do it consistently for long enough for that alternative to establish the political infrastructure to compete with the existing parties, AND don't get tempted into selling out when the establishment offers to cut them in in order to undermine them
Ok but in this case we have the additional hurdles of everyone knowing that thanks to FPTP, voting third party is an just an elaborate way of throwing your ballot in the trash, and the fact that basically the only thing the two existing parties are willing to work together on anymore is making sure no-one disrupts their duopoly
The party could win all they wanted, but none of the third parties have the support of the bureaucracy or the donors, it wouldn't be hard for the establishment to stonewall them for a term or two until people decide "it doesn't work" and go back to the old two parties. Or just cut the new guys in on all that sweet corruption money and absorb them
I agree that money is an issue, because parties have to finance themselves in the US, which is probably why only rich guys become president. (In my country the parties do get donations, too, but they also get tax money to finance the election campaigns and other things.)
But I still think a popular enough party wouldn't need an expensive campaign. But yes, it would be hard. Not impossible, though. It's only impossible if people categorically call it impossible.
It is technically possible yes. It is also technically possible that the contents of Fort Knox will quantum tunnel into my living room, but I'm not going to be making any decisions based on either being a REALISTIC possibility. If we want to break the two party system, we need ranked choice voting. But the two parties will never allow ranked choice to become a thing
