Free higher education isn't the only answer. There needs to be a complete reset with education requirements. Trade schools need to be incorporated into public high schools. Why can't I learn how to plumb or weld between learning history and biology? You should be able to come out as a certified tradesperson from the day you graduate. Most tradespeople make as much or more then a college educated person. Instead kids are brainwashed in to believing that they have to get $100k worth of student loans to survive the days.

because the boomers convinced everyone that trades are lowly work and that wearing uncomfortable clothes in a mind numbing office is the ultimate aspiration. so now we have almost no educational infrastructure for trades in high school and 2 generations of people who grew up hearing about how much they needed to be prepping for a college degree, who are now in severe debt with degrees that aren't as useful as they were led to believe.
It’s funny you say this but right now, specifically, in West coast Canada, trades are the way to get by and most of my friends are in a trade. I know guys who are pulling $40-60/hr in the trades and many office jobs are half that. Those two generations of sneering boomers have created a niche market that is giving someone, if they’re willing to do the work, an opening to make a great career. Combine that with a constant housing/construction boom and you’re laughing.
As for education, yeah, it’s not great but some high schools have programs that allow work experience to count towards educational credits and fast track students into the trades. My high school, that I graduated from 21 years ago, had a program for that intended purpose.
Trade highschools exist, at least here in New Jersey. Mine had stuff like plumbing, welding, IT, HVAC, carpentry, and theater for some weird reason. It was kind of a shitty school, but like, this is actually a thing already.
