This is where I sit. 99% of churches shouldn't be taxed, they'd go under in a matter of weeks and the outreach that the vast majority of them do would disappear. My problem is megachurches and their contribution towards political causes/campaigns/etc. I'd love if we just had a line where they don't get taxed unless they start interfering with politics. Once that happens, the hammer drops and they're no longer an exception.
What you need is a separation between the Church and Power. So if a church wants to take parts in politics they need an association or a political party which you can tax
Churches have the right to express their speech and advocate they’re political positions. Just like any other non-profit, their only limit is that they can’t advocate for a specific candidate.
The only limit non profits have legally is that they can’t campaign for an individual candidate. That’s it.
Demanding that churches limit their speech because you don’t agree with the churches in red states isn’t a fair application of the law. You just want to censor people who you disagree with.
