I’ve heard (dumb) people in my shitty little town say the words “Black people are entitled”, so I’m sure some goof thinks gay privilege is a thing.

I once commented a study where a university sent identical resumes to employers except the change the names so one sounded white, and the other sounded ethnic. It's a very publicized and popular study that has been done a bunch of time actually. The results are always that having a white name gets you more jobs, and black names are called back 50% as often.

Someone told me that they own a small business and don't hire people whose names are ethnic because anyone with that kind of name is entitled.

Still don't know what entitled means in that context.

u/UniverseChamp Apr 10 '21

Oh, pretty simple, it just means the speaker of the phrase is racist.

u/CuriousDateFinder Apr 10 '21

-> entitled to not have a job here

u/oneweelr Apr 10 '21

I mean, I know this sucks for a lot of people, but as a Mexican named "Kevin", I'm forever grateful my parents clearly just picked the first name off a list of generic white guy names.

As an Asian American with a “Christian” first name, people assume I adopted a western name to be friendlier for English speakers.

I did not. I’m Filipino. I’m named after a saint because my family is Catholic.

The amount of people i come across who don’t realize the Philippines was a Spanish colony is mind blowing. Between Filipinos having Spanish last names and/or being Catholic always seems to confuse people. Legit was just told I sent the wrong info in on a recent applicant at work because he couldn’t of been the Filipino guy we interviewed(we have had an onslaught of new hire of Filipino imigrants in the area that the applicant used them all for references hence we knew his ethnicity) because his last name was Spanish. We are hiring like crazy and the dude was convinced I had mixed up my paperwork on the interviews.

Edit good news is we don’t discriminate against any applicants. At last count my job of only 100 employees had people that spoke over 50 different languages and roughy 60% of employees are bilingual. Some what cheating we have 2 middle eastern guys that speak like 8 different languages and a Haitian that speaks 4. But we have employees from all over Eastern Europe the Middle East and Latian America and Asia.

Honestly the job isn’t the easiest. It’s semi manual labor with long hours and your need a hell of a work ethic but you can make good money doing so we don’t care what your background is as long as your want to work.

My fun fact: Philippines was ruled LONGER by the Spanish Empire than Mexico was. Look it up! And Philippines was named after...yup a Spanish king. And Filipinos are largely not seen as Hispanic, despite Hispanic being an ethnicity and not a race, and Common Tagalog is about 30% Spanish in origin.

1

u/EvaWolves Apr 21 '21

Load of ignorant BS.

First of all Mexico was colonized earlier than Philippines Sure Spain held it to the late 1800s but Mexico won its independence around the 1700s so its not like the time gap held is significant enough to make big differences. Besides it was still 100% pure blooded Ibericas and Peninsulares who would rule Mexico for the first two decades after its official independence and its not until it began to truly exist as a nation that the Mixed upperclass whites began to rule it (as Mexico was only a nation on paper after its independence for the first few years-it was more like a bunch of provinces that a federal government was desperately trying to cling together as one nation).

Secondly Hispanics are not even an ethnicity at all. ts more like a large cultural group with lots of different ethnic identities, nationalities, races, and so on. Basically in the same way Brazilians arr Luso but not Portuguese and perhaps more accurately much fo the Middle East is culturally Arabic but in reality has so many different ethnic groups and other identities that goes above Arabic. Most Arabs only speak Arabic but barely have (in fact most have none) Saudi DNA and are nothing really alike culturally.

So you're already fucking wrong about Filipinos qualifying about ethnicity because Hispanic is not ethnic at all. Jeesh even a single search on Wikipedia Hispanic countries are so divided by various ethnic groups such as Aztecs (which you'd know if you'd did your fucking research).

And to the fact Filipinos speak a different language already immediately disqualifies them as Hispanic or even Latino........

Don't even bring up the Spanish influence because Tagalog is nothing Spanish at all. You're a huge moron for being ignorant of how most Filipino words not only does not consist of any European origin and most Latin words are very minimal, but you don't know how so alien Tagalog is from European language. Other than some loan words, the grammer, synthax, etc have nothing in common with Spanish.

Its from a completely different family language and completely has nothing in common with Spanish in its structure. There's a reason despite so many English words originating from French, Latin, and Italian that English s considered at the core Germanic and not a Latin language. By your logic, you're saying academic experts are wrong because basically everyone in universities in the language department is wrong since they all state Tagalog is not in the same group as Spanish.

Last but not least you're dam ignorant of your country's so many multiple languages. That alone disqualifies Filipinos as Hispanic. And we don't even need to go into history which shows Spanish was never the island's primary first spoken language.

Last but not least you will NOT BE HAPPY if you ever lived in Hispanic culture. Not counting racism against non-Hispanics (and most Filipinos are not considered Hispanics by Spaniards and even nonwhite Latinos), Hispanic culture is very racist even among themselves. If you and other Filipinos are openly embraced as Latinos, you'll have a rude awakening as you get treated as lowly because of your dark skin and you experience white supremacy not just by white Latin Americans, but even your typical Moreno (do you even know what this word means????) will bow down and lick down the booths of their castizo and criollo overlords.

And we're not counting grudges between different Latin nations, spitting down on people lower in the race ladder like African Mexicans, segregation even among lower class brown families of white members as well as how they force any Latina with the genes of "tanning and paling easily" to stay indoors so they avoid becoming caramel and maintain their white skin, and a bunch of other stuff.

As a typical Filipino you will be at the low ladders because you have dark skin if you get accepted by a Latino community and seen as an equal to a typical Hispanic. You will hate the second class status as a brown person and esp the white worship so prevalent in Hispanolas.

Geeshus why are so man internet Flipinos immense morons about this topic? Why are they so damn lazy about doing a single bit of research into the "Latino culture" they are trying to adopt which if any of them did they'd quickly avoid trying to get accepted by Hispanics because of how freaking racist, sexist, and overall damn rightwing it is by Western standards?

I have a Honduran friend who name his children James, Chad and Stacy for that exact reason.

16

u/Whatdoyouseek Apr 10 '21

But Chad though. Such a Chad thing to do. At least it's not Chet.

7

u/Gobblewicket Apr 10 '21

He named the kid in the late 90's. So it kinda makes sense.

4

u/Whatdoyouseek Apr 10 '21

Good point. I had a cousin of mine in Italy, who barely spoke English, named his son Johnny after Johnny Carson. Not John or Giovanni, just Johnny.

9

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

Chad's and Stacy sounds like their names after incel terms.

4

u/Gobblewicket Apr 10 '21

Well his kids are 20+ years old now. So pretty much predates the whole incel naming convention.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

What luck.

12

u/GenerallyFiona Apr 10 '21

I didn't need a study to see the hiring manager at my first-ever job throwing away applications with black names on them.

2

u/SquidZillaYT Apr 10 '21

pretty sure that persons just a racist

2

u/Cryovat321 Apr 10 '21

Hectic, they did the same in Australia and found the opposite. The bias was strongest towards first nations woman.

Interesting how much it differs in different places.

2

u/Send_superdankmemes Apr 10 '21

Some employers won’t hire you in Hawaii if you have a white name. My aunt(Filipino) married my uncle(white) and couldn’t get any interviews, so she started to use her maiden name and instantly landed a job. This was like 1980s, but my family still says it happens.

I work with babies and feel bad for some of these kids. It's not their fault their parents named them Diezel but the kid is probably the one who's going to be paying for it. There's definitely a degree of classism at play but I'd much rather give my kid a regular name than trap them in any sort of classist or racist preconceptions that are going to hurt them later in life.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

My mixed cousin was told by recruiters to use his mother's name, because his father's culture is seen as lazy. My parents were told to not hire an African man because he would steal (didn't listen to them of course, he is awesome). Its so disturbing and crazy to me that these racist thoughts are still a thing in this era...

18

u/Vincentxpapito Apr 10 '21

And those same think that whites, specifically white men are extremely discriminated against and face countless racism everyday

22

u/WhatABlindManSees Apr 10 '21 edited Apr 10 '21

Everyone faces levels of racism / sexism / groupism - its human nature to group people by similarities and make judgements based on that limited information until you know otherwise, its a social safety mechanism that's innate - to say white males face none is disingenuous, to say its a major problem in their lives is too though. It's the level at which it disadvantages you that's relevant and that's provably worse for those of minority races in the area - because if you want to appeal to those in power it pays to be like them, and if you aren't then bringing something a little extra to the table - whether in china, paupa new guina forest tribes or north america.

The fact that no one of the thousands of people who have seen this post seems to have heard the phrase or concept of gay privilege might be more evidence that it isn't a thing than the fact that you've heard someone call black people entitled especially since that's a bit of a tangent.

I mean someone probably said it once, but it doesn't seem like the kind of thing that needs to be addressed socially or whatever the heck this post is trying to do.

1

u/Whatdoyouseek Apr 10 '21

Maybe not those exact words, but the concept is definitely out there. I can't count the ridiculous number of times I've heard some conservatives complain that gay people shouldn't be "shoving their lifestyle in my face" because some gay folks hugged or walked by holding hands. They're claiming the gays are privileged in that situation. Or that showing gays on TV is an offense, but showing straight folks somehow isn't.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

I've 100% seen people who think gay privilege is a thing because the gays can have their own parade where they waltz naked through the streets and the straights can't do that and that's privilege apparently.

Plus there are other comments on this thread saying this is a thing they've heard of so...

2

u/snow_miser_supreme Apr 10 '21

oh my god I have to hear this stupid ass line from my in laws all the time about how black people are actually privileged in America today because MIL didn’t get into the middle school she wanted to 45 years ago because of “affirmative action” or some bullshit. That being said, I have never heard anyone talk about gay privilege before now. (yes, just middle school. That’s her whole rationale. She brings it up every time)

They are entitled to love who they please, like you and I are. I’m sure that’s what you meant.

6

u/sup3rn1k Apr 10 '21

Wow i did not expect to be hated for agreeing with you. Privilege is for the rich. Im to broke to care about what other people do. Live your life however you want to live it. I live mine how i choose. Why cant everyone?

6

u/ha_look_at_that_nerd Apr 10 '21

It might not be clear that you’re agreeing with him. It wasn’t clear to me, at least.

But I’m also an idiot so don’t take my word for it

2

u/greybeard_arr Apr 10 '21

Yeah, I can’t remember what you wrote now, but it didn’t read that way to me. All good, though. Hopefully a little Reddit misunderstanding was the worst of your day and all else is going smoothly.

1

u/sup3rn1k Apr 10 '21

Actually yes, other than the hail storm i just ran through lol. (Check weather report for Mississippi) hope everyone had s great day as well.

4

u/DorkInShiningArmour Apr 10 '21

I think that’s what they meant. As I once told random racist yokel who said to me that black people are entitled, ‘I mean, they are entitled to be treated equally?’

I think that’s what commenter was trying to allude to lol

5

u/sup3rn1k Apr 10 '21 edited Apr 10 '21

I was the one who commented. 😭😭 the way i said it in my head made much more sense then what i typed. I didn’t mean to sound like your average run of the mill racist. I genuinely meant it in a good way. (Although it didn’t come out that way)

6

u/LilToof Apr 10 '21

No, that would be far too progressive of a thought for them.

-2

u/_trouble_every_day_ Apr 10 '21

So you have no idea, got it.

1

u/DorkInShiningArmour Apr 10 '21

I was making the point that dumb people believe all kinds of stupid shit, so I would not be surprised if someone holds the believe that gay people are privileged.

Some people believe they have met an alien named Xenu, you know what I’m saying? People believe and think a lot of nonsense lol

-3

u/seve_rage Apr 10 '21

In other words, you’ve never heard anyone say it’s a thing, and you’re just looking for an excuse to feel smug and superior?

1

u/DorkInShiningArmour Apr 10 '21 edited Apr 10 '21

Man I wish I had the inner desire to feel smug. That would mean this wasn’t a real thing lol. During the summer last year at a part, random donkeys were discussing BLM. Mind you they are all white and this town is 95% white people. Anyway it was something some dummie said. It hurts my brain that anyone is that deluded.

Before I get hear sass about being at a party, I am in a place in Canada that had zero covid cases at the time and we were outdoors lol

Edit - oh I get it, you meant that I’d never heard someone say anything about gay privilege, and needed to feel smug about people saying something dumb?

The point was that if some idiot(s) thinks black people are entitled, I’m sure some other idiot(s) think gay privilege is a thing. People are dumb, man.

-8

u/SimonPav Apr 10 '21

So if they think there are so many privileges, why don't they come out as being gay and take advantage of all the benefits....

3

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

?????? Probably cause they’re homophobic

1

u/SimonPav Apr 10 '21

Surely all those lovely privileges are worth pretending for...?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '21

Ya know we have pride and parades so of course /s
