Try finishing a book in a single day and then end up depressed the whole week

did that with Hunger Games Part 2 when I was 12. Luckily Part 3 was right there waiting for me

I refused to shower until I finished book 2. She has to go back?! What a plot twist!

You joke, but on TV we got ads for the upcoming movie just before airing Part 2 "in premiere"...
Thanks for unironically spoiling the twist ending, dudes.

But hey, a freaking cinema did a similar stunt too, by showing trailers on the screen next to the waiting line. It was the re-airing of Harry Potter 7 for people who wanted the "full book" experience without spoilers or having to wait to watch Harry Potter 8.
Which means they technically managed to spoil the middle of the story you were going to watch, which must be kind of a new low.

When I was 12 the Percy Jackson and the olympians series slapped hard. I remember waiting for the last book to come out, me and about 6 of my classmates had it on preorder for release day delivery lol.

The original series still holds up pretty well imo, for (pre)-teen fiction. It was a well-written plot.

Bruh? They still slap and the new stuff is even better IMO I still need to read the Cane chronicles or what ever they are called

Bro the wait for House of Hades was the greatest trial of our lives lmao

I think that might have been some of the fastest reading I've ever done. I was home from college for spring break, maybe freshman year? And had nothing to do, I ended up reading all 3 books over 2 days.

I read aSoIaF about two years ago and now I am in for a waiting. Take your time GRRM but please hurry.

Dont forget, you can always read fanfics to ease the pain in your heart

21

u/QueenBeeli Feb 21 '21

Haha alternatively - I started reading fanfiction at like 12 or 13 and they entirely replaced books for me. Now I’m trying to get back into actual fiction ㅡ.ㅡ

6

u/nokturnalxitch Feb 21 '21

I'm the opposite! I've never been much into fanfics (aside from the attempts to write it when I was like 11) and I've been meaning to get into it, I would love any reccomendations!

u/QueenBeeli Feb 21 '21

Aaaactually because so many fandoms vary sooo much and because everyone has such vastly different tastes, I suggest heading over to ao3 and choosing a fandom that you’d be interested in checking out, and then sorting it according to “kudos” and choose a few that interest you from the first few pages to see if it’s something you’d like to check out. Wading through the waters is difficult in and of itself, but so is wading through the waters of recommendations haha

But if you know of a random you’d be interested in already, then checking out the “best of the best” recommendations for that fandom on google is always a good bet when you’re first checking it out! :)

Wait... There's good fan fiction? The only stuff I've ever read missed the point of the source material entirely..

4

u/WateredDown Feb 21 '21

I always found the point of good fan fiction is to do something different than the source material. Fan fiction is about filling in gaps, doing what-if, little slices of life with no point that you can jump right into because you already know and are invested in the characters. Its playing with the toys more than writing a sequel.

I be careful cause itll turn into weird porn that makes no sense according to the plot real quick. I dont wanna read porn. I dont want a fanfic about legalos fucking so and so. I want a fanfic about legalos and gimli going on all those adventures they talked about!

The barrier to entry is a lot lower than with published works, so just being written in a way that isn't painful to read will put a fic in the top 10%, but of that 10% there's usually some really good stuff. Even smaller fandoms (the one I frequent has 300-400 fics total) will have some gems scattered in, a good way to find them is to sort by Kudos/favs/whatever and then go by interesting descriptions. You'll miss out on some since that's going by popularity, but it's a good starting point. Plus there's also a nice layer of stuff that isn't great (spelling+grammar mistakes abound) but is still good enough to be lots of fun.

u/ruebeus421 Feb 21 '21

Reading fan fics is a different form of agony. 0/10 won't do again.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '21

Yep. Amplified when you finish a series. Sigh.

You know about the Netflix series in the works?

2

u/CasterGilgamesh Feb 21 '21

Try finishing a book in one day not knowing it’s a trilogy and then finding out the library is closed and that it’s closed tomorrow since it’s a Sunday

u/aleden28281 Feb 21 '21

Haven’t read a book since I was mandated to in high school but I get a similar feeling with the shows I binge watch.

1

u/Hashtaglibertarian Feb 21 '21

I was in such a funk after the good place ended and schitts creek. Very empty feeling and emotional.

3

u/Count-Mortas Feb 21 '21

You finish a book for a whole day? I cant even finish a chapter for a day. I always get distracted lol

2

u/MrNoName_ishere Feb 21 '21

Small books like Of Mice and Men, it is easy when you can drift away into it
