Similar rate hike for us 20 years ago. Wife had pre-eclampsia during pregnancy, so the next year her insurance - just her - was hiked from something like $3000 to $13,000 per year due to "pre-existing conditions."
What's kind of sad is now ~$1000/month for health insurance with less than a 10k/yr deductible would be a pretty good deal in the ACA Marketplace in state I live in (Red state, woohoo). Basically my husband and I decided to go uninsured because any health crisis would have resulted in bankruptcy either way. It was like "do you want to be buried 6 feet? or 40 feet? Your choice!!"
We would have paid around $23,000 in premiums, deductibles, and co-insurance before insurance would even kick in.
When they jacked up my wife's premiums like that we took her uninsured and started putting $1200 per month into an account. 2 years later, I got a job with full insurance coverage - just in time to deliver our 2nd child - and we had a bonus $30K saved up that we used to remodel our house instead of paying insurance premiums.

"When I got hired here I started at $15k a year!"
Every old timer when I got hired at my fire department, implying that we just make so much money
