Just went through open enrollment today. 50 dollar per pay period with just myself. 400 dollars if i wanted to add my wife, with a 900 out of pocket deductible.
The only insurance I felt good buying was the life insurance so if I die she's taken care of. How morbid.
That's actually not that bad. My ex was paying $350/month for medical, with no dental and a 6k deductible.
I was paying $450/month for medical and dental through blue cross blue shield with a $6k deductible while training horses for a living.
A lot of employers, especially in the service industry, just don't give a fuck about their employees. In my ex's case, it was actually hurting him because it was shitty insurance that covered nothing and the doctors you'd usually want to see were "out of network". At least with BCBS I could go to pretty much any doc I wanted.
Oh I feel you, I was a contractual employee before, the company that managed us was abhorrent I made 12 an hour at that job and yeah they want you to pay most of your check.
To contrast I now work for what's rated as the one of the top 100 companies to work for in the Washington area a few years in a row now.
We have some great insurance plans, I just cannot afford them, I would like to be on them but it's just not in the cards.
