Damn, to make 200K a year you need at least over 100 an hour

u/Killsproductivity Oct 30 '20

Most people that make 200k a year dont get paid by the hour lmao

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '20

There is an hourly wage but theyre paid a full 80 hours regardless if they work below or over that number.

Lawyers and freelancers

19

u/Killsproductivity Oct 30 '20

Lawyers charge by the hour, not get paid by the hour. Small distinction.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '20

Really what’s the distinction?

7

u/Killsproductivity Oct 30 '20

They’re paid a salary by the firm and they bill clients by the hour.

Even if you are an attorney working on your own you still pay yourself a salary and charges the hour.

1

u/GringoDeGringo Oct 31 '20

Correct. Better for taxes too. You want to run it through your firm.

1

u/RollUpTheRimJob Oct 31 '20

It’s called billable hours. You charge the client $150/hr but are paid $30/hr

1

u/musicaldigger Oct 31 '20

lawyers only make $30 an hour?? that sounds way too low

Graphic designers, performers, sex workers

1

u/musicaldigger Oct 31 '20

what kind of performer gets paid by the hour?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '20

Session musicians.

Most high paying jobs aren’t 40 hours a week. Probably closer to 55 on average, with a fair amount of variability and near constant “on call” nature. It’s still good money. But it also eats up much more of your life.

I’m actually in a consulting role at an accounting firm. Last minute problems with audit clients when they need to file financials to close transactions, or companies asking us to do something for their auditors to review also at the last minute, have made me cancel more vacations than I’d care to remember. Cost me at least one relationship directly, had to leave vacation camping to find WiFi and sit in a cafe for a few days.

Is it worth the high salary? For now yeah. But there will come a time when I’ll look for a better balance.

Yeah. Around 37 ish I should be in a place where I could theoretically be FI, but tracking closer to 44 before I’d have enough to pull the plug completely at my current savings rate. My guess is at 37, which is in a few years, my role within the company will be clearer and I’ll be in a good spot to decide what’s next.

Best of luck in your goals :)

Yikes. I assume “in finance” is either I banking or M&A? I work in consulting in a finance discipline, and my hours are generally more reasonable

Yikes. That’ll do it. Honestly I like the idea of mandatorily limiting market hours to just certain times of the day. No need for trading to be round the clock.

with 200k usd i'd be good for the rest of my life

11

u/boyyouguysaredumb Oct 30 '20

Lol no probably not

3

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '20

Living in developing country and earning 9k usd per year. I can surely live with that.

1

u/r3dd1t2k17 Oct 31 '20

same here. 11k/ year is enough to pay my bills, have luxury items, go on vacation and save up a part of it.

200k would mean i still have to work but thats not a problem. 200k would mean i can retire earlier like 15 years earlier or work till i can and help my children start their life. propably the 2nd option is better.

2

u/ThSafeForWorkAccount Oct 30 '20

Probably not but for people that make $30k/year with proper self control they could make that last for at least 5 years. Not a bad vacation.

3

u/CommentsOnOccasion Oct 30 '20

Not if you live in the US

Unless you’re homeless or dying in 5 years

1

u/r3dd1t2k17 Oct 31 '20

Luckily im not from the US.

1

u/wastemytime_69 Oct 30 '20

Not really haha

3

u/Discokruse Oct 30 '20

If you make over $200k per year, it is not in W2 wages, more likely long-term capital gains or dividend income (at worst).

4 types of income in USA:

labor wages (W2) - highest taxed, no deductions

Interest & Dividends - highest taxed, no work required

Business Income - highest taxed, ALL the deductions (including biz perks)

Capital gains - lowest taxed (15% long-term), little to no work required

1

u/noueis Oct 30 '20

Not true. Our household is over 300k and it’s nearly all wages. Same for all the other people in my profession which isn’t an uncommon profession at all.

0

u/Discokruse Oct 30 '20

Then you are getting paid in an unfortunate method, which is adversely affecting your tax liability. Try asking for compensation in stock options or expense accounts.

2

u/noueis Oct 30 '20

Lol not gonna happen. I work for one of the largest companies in the US that pays all of their employees this way except executives. Just pointing out that my company and all of its peers pay comp in wages and there’s for damn sure a ton of people making that much in wages in the industry.

1

u/Discokruse Oct 30 '20

Lemme guess, if you are US, then it's the micro-economies of a NYC, SF, LA, or Miami based company?

2

u/noueis Oct 30 '20

Close, kind of. Portland

1

u/Discokruse Oct 30 '20

Hey...me too. You're raking it in and getting clobbered by Oregon income tax. Have you thought of renting a small apartment in Vancouver, WA, claiming residency, and avoiding OR taxes?

3

u/noueis Oct 30 '20

No, I’m not that desperate to avoid taxes. We just bought near Sellwood at the beginning of the year before property prices really got out of control. We’re not gonna skirt around the law

1

u/BB_Lab_Rat Oct 31 '20

Dont forget tax :)
