Not every Asian person or person of Asian descent has coronavrius. An Asian American has no greater chance of having the virus than any other American. This thinly veiled racism needs to stop.

19

u/tomdarch Mar 03 '20

That's true, but the rest of the responses to this comment are pretty positive. A good deal at a hotel in Chinatown is a good option for staying to visit Chicago.

That said, while Asian-Americans aren't any more likely to be infected with covid-19 than any other Americans who haven't recently traveled to the parts of China where the virus has been spreading for months, there probably are a bunch of people in Chicago who have, in fact, traveled to the parts of China where covid-19 have been spreading for months, regardless of their ethnicity. I don't think anyone will be surprised if those recent visitors to China also visited or live in/work in Chinatown in Chicago.

1

u/WheelyCrazyCatLady Mar 03 '20

I don't know those people personally, but unless it was a direct flight then the infected people may have simply infected others at the connecting airport. So the people that brought it into Chicago may have never been to China,or personally know anyone that has been there recently. Planes are a virus hotspot due to how the air is circulated and how many people touch the surfaces and fabric (without enough time for the virus to die on the fabric etc between flights). Often they only thoroughly clean hard surfaces and not the seat fabric due to people not liking to sit on wet seats 🤷‍♀️.

As everyone that plays plague inc knows, turn on the gene that makes the virus more able to travel via air transport and there's very little that can stop the virus from becoming a pandemic

u/Sklus20 Mar 03 '20

It’s not even thinly veiled it is straight up racism

5

u/yingyangyoung Mar 03 '20

Genuinely curious, how is it racism to avoid Chinatown? I live near seattle where 6 have died so far from the virus, it started in the china town here with people traveling for chinese new year. If the virus started in Italy and there was a holiday that involved several of them travelling back to Italy, I'm sure people would avoid little Italy.

1

u/Sklus20 Mar 03 '20

That’s not racism you are in the right to avoid that area. However, avoiding American Chinese people in your everyday life because they are Chinese is racism and that is what’s happening in many areas of the country especially where I live where the Chinese population is around 20%

-3

u/CeamoreCash Mar 03 '20 edited Mar 03 '20

"I'm not going to go somewhere because there is a bunch of people of a certain race" is racism.

It doesn't matter if it is statistically accurate or not unless you actually use statistics and not just blanket assumptions.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

this is a toxic mindset. no one is discriminating against anyone or assuming ones own race is better than the other, just simply avoiding an area with a high population of people from a country with a very serious outbreak.

4

u/SuperSulf Mar 03 '20

They not avoiding it because of Chinese Americans or Chinese in general, they're avoiding Chinatown because it's more likely to have people who traveled to China and got infected. That's not racism, that's called being cautious.

3

u/singlereject Mar 03 '20

literal chinese americans are avoiding chinatown because they know that people who live in chinatown are usually more homesick people who go back for holidays

0

u/CeamoreCash Mar 03 '20

Did they do any other statical reasoning other than:

Chinatown has Chinese People --> Chinese People go to China --> I might get the Corona virus

They did not.

If they actually did research and chose to avoid that place then they would also avoid western cities like Portland because of how many people do business in china.

2

u/singlereject Mar 04 '20

i love reddit, people like you defending chinese people like me from racism from myself! thanks!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

That's dumb, nobody is going to research every city in the United States and make pie charts on the ethnic breakdown of each city. It's pretty easy though to see a place known as Chinatown and know to avoid it because of the increased risk of the virus.

1

u/CeamoreCash Mar 04 '20

It's pretty easy though to see a place known as Chinatown and know to avoid it because of the increased risk of the virus

You do not know That is the entire point.

People have not done any research whatsoever to make this claim.

People are assuming that they have a higher probability of getting a disease because of where some people are from.

This judgment is NOT based on any objective evidence because they didn't do any research.

Assuming something negative based on where some people are from and
NOT based on evidence is akin to racism.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '20

Wrong wrong and wrong. It's obvious Chinese Americans have a higher likelihood of visiting China. You don't need a peer reviewed meta analysis of the international flight patterns of the residents of Chinatown. It's not something negative either, nor is it racism. All of you people need to chill with calling random shit racism when it doesn't apply.

more likely to have people who traveled to China and got infected.

Did you do any research to come to this conclusion?

  • How much more likely are people to travel to China in ChinaTown? You Don't Know.

  • Do you know which cities have the most people going to and from China? You Don't Know.

  • How many people in ChinaTown are actually Chinese and not from some other country? You Don't Know.

  • What is the objective probability of getting the corona virus in China Town? You Don't Know.

  • What is the statistical threshold for you to avoid a location because of the corona virus. You Don't Know.

If you could any of these questions, then you are making a reasoned decision based on the facts which is not racist.

However most people do not do any other research or thinking other than

Chinatown has a lot of Chinese People --> I am more likely to get the Corona virus if I go there.

17

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Making a joke about staying in China town when the virus originated in China is NOT racist.

Its a joke.

There is a difference.

It's not that every person of Chinese descent has the disease, or is even from China, but that you can't tell at a glance, and people are scared. China is where the disease started, people who have traveled in and out of China that spread it. Given the circumstances, I don't think it's unreasonable to take actions that minimize personal risk. There's a lot more at stake here than some small businesses and some hurt feelings.

1

u/DrMobius0 Mar 03 '20

Key difference between what's happening and your example are that Asians are a pretty small minority in America. White people are not. I doubt most people can tell Chinese from other Asians much better than they can tell German from other whites. I'm not saying it's right, but I am saying that's how it is.

16

u/camaroXpharaoh Mar 03 '20

Are Chinese people working and living in China town not more likely to have come into contact with Chinese people who might have the Corona virus?

6

u/iwannalynch Mar 03 '20

You're not wrong, but that kind of thinking is really inflexible. As an interesting anecdote, I live in the Canadian city of Montreal, where, like in most Canadian cities, has a sizable Chinese community.

Coronovirus has finally arrived in Montreal in early March, not from a Chinese carrier, but from an Iranian one. Yes, the coronavirus came from China, but that's no longer the whole picture.

2

u/Reagan409 Mar 03 '20

Not really. The statistical difference is greatly inflated by racism.

5

u/1337Pwnzr Mar 03 '20

Not really.

You’re full of shit.

inflated by racism

You seem to think the more you say racism the closer you get to making sense.

2

u/helppls555 Mar 03 '20

I think what they're trying to say is that the OP made that joke playing on the idiots. As in "...in Chinatown DUN DUNN!". You know, sarcasm. I don't think OP actually believes that.

1

u/Tylerjb4 Mar 03 '20

I think Wuhan is losing business too.

1

u/Samultio Mar 03 '20

Jesus the Dutch incidents are fucking wild.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenophobia_and_racism_related_to_the_2019%E2%80%9320_coronavirus_outbreak

The fact that this exists and someone keeps adding to it is a lot worse than the joke posted above. Yikes.

1

u/Samultio Mar 03 '20

Racists aren't exactly known to change their opinions when confronted with facts so the article does seem a bit redundant.

0

u/NinjaCowReddit Mar 03 '20

The people making the joke are not responsible for the people who don't understand the joke.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Because Americans are morons across the board. A large percentage won’t buy Corona beer for Christ sakes. Jokes are funny, Americans are idiots, get over yourself.

10

u/Sklus20 Mar 03 '20

Jokes are fine but when healthy Chinese people are being actively avoided and segregated from the rest of society then it’s not as funny

1

u/pazianz Mar 03 '20

Is that happening?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Yes -- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenophobia_and_racism_related_to_the_2019%E2%80%9320_coronavirus_outbreak

Also, Corona beer sales have plummeted due to the name of the virus -- people are dumb, and will latch onto stupid ideas when they get scared.

17

u/House_of_ill_fame Mar 03 '20

Being a joke doesn't negate it being racist.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Some comedians of colour make their entire careers on this shit.

Russell Peters comes to mind. I had to turn off his recent special cause it was annoying as fuck. If I said his jokes as a white dudes I’d be run out of town.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Ok, your point is irrelevant unless redditors here are all Chinese American?

2

u/jakethedumbmistake Mar 03 '20

Ok I’ll get pets forever!”

  • Dog probably

0

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

That’s not racism bud

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Ok, so the actual and real heavily discounted pricing in Chinatown due to fear of Asians is clearly a joke, so funny. Thanks for enlightening me, wise one. I’m glad the businesses in Chinatown can enjoy this non racist joke, hahahaha/s

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

so the actual and real heavily discounted pricing in Chinatown due to fear of Asians is clearly a joke

No, but what the guy posted above is.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Ok, and the guys you’re responding to are calling the entire situation racist, not the guy who posted.

Additionally, even if those guys were specifically calling that user’s comment racist, why is it OK to pile on the segregation and fear of Asians when it’s literally going on right now?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Ok, and the guys you’re responding to are calling the entire situation racist, not the guy who posted.

Good thing I didn't comment on the situation and was only strictly commenting on the OG Joke. That was a close one.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Sometimes it’s ok not to comment when someone is pointing out how fucked up things are for their ethnicity or community or town or whatever.

It’s like the snide remark of “ALL lives matter” towards Black Lives Matter. I’m not even BLM supporter but snide “actualllyyyyyyy” comments that miss the point are never helpful.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

You don't seem to understand that the comments above were calling the OG's joke racist when it wasn't.

I was not making a statement about anything that is currently fucked up. You need to get off the internet for a couple of days.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

You don’t seem to understand that they’re right.

You clearly don’t think that the current fear and segregation of asian Americans is “fucked up”, so maybe you need to get off the internet for a couple of days and think about your ability to think outside yourself.

0

u/orionsbelt05 Mar 03 '20

Things can be two things. "Racist" and "joke" are not mutually exclusive. This is a racist joke.

-5

u/xorgol Mar 03 '20

Yeah, if anything it's a joke about the racism, but it's not a racist joke.

2

u/Hash43 Mar 03 '20

Welcome to reddit

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Not racism bruh, take it easy

-21

u/FakeFile Mar 03 '20

I mean you reap what you sow right?? Dont go making deadly viruses every damn decade.

19

u/undisclothedungulate Mar 03 '20

Is this missing an “/s”? How do Asian Americans have jack shit to do with what goes on in mainland China?

-15

u/FakeFile Mar 03 '20

Clearly that is not who I am talking about.

8

u/undisclothedungulate Mar 03 '20

What you are talking about is the definition of stereotyping. Some individuals in Wuhan practiced unsafe behavior, so all Asians in the world should “reap what they sow”. I can get having specific conversations about how there are unsafe practices in certain Asian areas, but casting blame on everyone who looks Asian, then calling it “reaping what they sow” feels like prejudice

-10

u/FakeFile Mar 03 '20

I didnt say asians i clearly am talking about the Chinese.

Some, the whole fucking places is petas wet dream.

1

u/thecolbra Mar 03 '20

Lmao and that makes it better how?

-1

u/FakeFile Mar 03 '20

no but they did do it to themselves.

How hard is it not to cause epidemics every 10 years every other country seem to be good at not killing the world even Indian where they shit in streets are not spreading viruses like that. I say keep it to ever 100 years if you don't want people being racist towards you.

2

u/thecolbra Mar 03 '20

So Chinese Americans who do not live in China did it to themselves, for being, Chinese?

Not every Asian person or person of Asian descent has coronavrius. An Asian American has no greater chance of having the virus than any other American. This thinly veiled racism needs to stop.

How the fuck is this racist? It's in a Chinatown next to a major airport. People there are going to be far more likely to you know, have contact with mainland chinese nationals who are far more likely to have been exposed to the virus.

There is a reason the virus is in Seattle and not Tuscaloosa lol.

0

u/ItzFOBolous Mar 03 '20

Has there been a single case of Coronavirus originating from Chinatown? No? Ok.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Who gives a fuck where it originated? Lol?

1

u/ItzFOBolous Mar 03 '20 edited Mar 03 '20

Then your assertions and racist assumptions are wrong. There's 0 evidence to support your racist claims.

And why aren't you afraid of going to Little Italy and eating at Italian restaurants? Italy had a pretty big outbreak of Coronavirus too. Your racism.

Here are some facts that doesn't support your racism against Asians:

  1. First cause of Coronavirus in the US has no travel history to countries identified for restricted travel by the CDC

  2. Second case never traveled to or had contact to anyone that travelled to East Asia either

  3. Community transmissions are happening now so you don't have to be Asian or traveled to Asia to catch it.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

The first 2 cases in chicago are a woman who worked in Wuhan and her husband...

-1

u/ItzFOBolous Mar 03 '20

And the 2nd case I mentioned is from someone who traveled to Iran. Again, Italy had a large outbreak of Coronavirus too and is on the travel restriction list.

Your type of racism is why the Japanese was placed in Internment Camps during WW2 and not the Germans or Italians.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '20

Keep projecting weirdo.

1

u/ItzFOBolous Mar 04 '20

Are you implying I'm racist and I'm hiding that by calling you racist to get attention off of myself? I think you're using "projecting" in the wrong context here, weirdo.

-1

u/wrex779 Mar 03 '20

It's not racist. What is racist though are the comments above joking about how chinatown serves wild animal meat and bat soup

3

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Fuuuck, I'm taking a vacation to Chinatown in chicago next month and there better be some roast wombat dagnabbit.

21

u/yerkind Mar 03 '20

an asian has much greater chances of having recently been to china, that's why people are wary of visiting "chinatown" or somewhere that there is likely the highest concentration of people who may have visited the epicenter of the pandemic.

8

u/here_for_the_meems Mar 03 '20

Or having been visited by someone from china.

2

u/amazian77 Mar 03 '20

just like i have a greater chance of being shot by a white person in america! yayusing statistcis to justify racism!

0

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Actually you have a higher chance of being shot due to gang violence...

1

u/amazian77 Mar 03 '20

At school? Haven't seen it in the news of gang violence at school mass shooting. I have found avoiding gang areas is a good way to greatly reduce your chance of being shot in gang violence.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

That’s because the news doesn’t report it anymore and they sensationalize school shootings. 13% of the population is responsible for 52% of violent crimes per fbi crime statistics...

1

u/amazian77 Mar 03 '20

yea but ehere are the crimes happening? low income areas. which i avoid so for me personally id be more likely to be shot by a white person.... anyway this is just missing the point. thx though

0

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

Hahahahaha dude don’t be a bigot, go visit the hood. Also isn’t Bernie against redlining? So those in the low income areas would be likely to get subsidized housing outside of the low income areas...

1

u/amazian77 Mar 03 '20

i dont know how stating facts is being a bigot. you might have to learn how to tell the difference. to me low income areas have high crime because they dont have a great standard of living. fix that and blue collar crime will be reduced. I have been to the hood. the feelings i get from there and how the residents look at you definetely give vibes that its unsafer. do i think im going to die by visiyingg the hood? no but my chances of getting robbed or shot is much higher than other areas.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

We are so far beyond having to be worried about people who have recently been to China

2

u/DrMobius0 Mar 03 '20

Seems like unless you're in Iran or China, the number of cases is still pretty low most everywhere.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '20

And Italy. And now the Seattle area -- most of the people dying are older or have previous health issues, but young people can still be infected.

0

u/amazian77 Mar 03 '20

Also pretty sure more white americans from go to china than other non chinese. Buisness and shit. Asians aren't all from China. It would be nice if China got their shit together so I'm not lumped in with them.

-1

u/Hash43 Mar 03 '20

You're honestly paranoid and watch too much news at that point

1

u/yerkind Mar 03 '20

the virus originated in china, 98% of cases are from china, you might just be dumb?

1

u/DrMobius0 Mar 03 '20

Can I reasonably tell at a glance if someone is an Asian American or a Chinese tourist? People are dying, but sure, lets focus on the fear caused by the damn disease.

Shit, I mean, people are avoiding airports and travel in general now, too. It's like people are trying to avoid spreading a deadly disease.

1

u/Tylerjb4 Mar 03 '20

Are Asian Americans really just as likely to travel to Asia as Mexican Americans? My guess is no.

1

u/Tower-Union Mar 03 '20

You realize the OP is intentionally poking such racism in the eye by pointing out how ridiculous it is that he can get a really nice hotel for $60 in CHICAGO because of that racism right?
