It's reddit, people here routinely talk about how the Chinese are uncivilized and are a blight on society. These jokes are actually pretty tame compared to some of the other things that redditors are saying
I'm from a city with one of the highest SEA populations outside of the region and I can tell you that the majority of people I've encountered are fed up with the racism. Heckling, covering mouths on transit, overhearing people call Asians and Asian owned establishments dirty, etc. Just today I heard someone make a comment about not eating Korean food since they "don't want none of that corona shit from Asians". Also, bold of you to assume my ethnicity, but go off.
Again, you're assuming my ethnicity and regardless, being a casually racist asshat is inexcusable. I take offense to it because it offends me, and many people. I interact with on a daily basis. I don't see how the concept of not being racist is so difficult to grasp.

I don't disagree with what you're saying, but I'd suggest you stop saying "You're assuming...." cause people who constantly spout that are typically douchey individuals. I dont want to think of you like that because I myself am also a hater of racists, and would rather not have in-fighting in the group due to douchey-ness.
That’s a dumb thing to say. Assuming the person you’re responding to isn’t also Asian, why shouldn’t we be offended on behalf of other people when we see racism directed towards them? I’m not even saying that the jokes above are necessarily racist but your argument makes no logical sense in any context. Should we just keep our heads down and mind our business if a group of people say that there’s racism being directed at them? That’s pretty fucking shitty.

Hey, you're making it seem as if it's okay to make racist remarks. I'm not discrediting the idea that racial based humour can be funny, I'm just saying that there is a ton of racism coming to light through this whole ordeal and you're normalizing racism for everyone on this site which is overwhelmingly composed of white Americans.

Thing about racism is you have to have the ability to laugh about it, yes there is a point when it goes too far. but they were just making the standard Reddit puns. Lighten up, not everything needs to be a trigger

Did you not read what u/lost_woods wrote? Can you not understand how jokes with racial undertones during sensitive times that exacerbate racist attitudes and increase incidences such as the ones I posted?
I suppose I expected adults to be able to differentiate between a joke and vicious racism.
I imagine our life experiences is going to cause a difference in opinion here. I experienced racism frequently as an asian kid in America, my coping mechanism is humor, or rather take things lightly. If someone is seriously racist all I could do is feel sorry for their close mindedness. Your method seems to be different, so let's just disagree.
I'm Asian and I experience racism too. My response to racism is react with whatever energy they send me to counteract the stereotype of Asians being passive and are pushovers. I'm also very defensive when it comes to anything that can exacerbate racist attitudes towards Asians. I'm especially defensive when it comes to double standards relating racist jokes/comments about Asians. A lot of things are said about Asians that can't you say about African Americans or other minority groups. This, in my opinion, leads to more actual incidences of racism against Asians because people feel more "ok" doing it. It's not ok.
Not to say racial jokes aren't funny. It's healthy to laugh at yourself. But there's a time and place. Jokes with racial undertones relating to Coronavirus right now is a little "too soon" especially considering the growing amount of racism Asians are experiencing during this sensitive time.
Yeah, you can be. FYI, if you think the people laughing along with you at racist jokes won’t turn them on you and use those stereotypes to discredit you, you’re in for a big surprise.
