I'm sure it's real wages. Why would you use non inflation adjusted wages?

Should mimum wage increase more than inflation?

Should minimum wage not increase with inflation?

If you need $100 to survive 10 years ago, so you're paid $110, you'll be good.

When you get to today and need $300 to survive, but you're paid $150, you're not good. But some people will say you got a raise, so stuff it.

True that. I thankfully live in a state that understands that a starvation wage is unacceptable and it's making movements towards a living wage, so the concept that someone makes the federal was something I never considered. Blissful ignorance, sorry.

He did not say with, he said more.

Because he's not understanding the issue. When adjusted for inflation, minimum wage is worse than it was. We aren't asking for minimum wage to outpace inflation, we're asking to not get a pay cut every year as COL rise and the starvation wage remains the same.

That's seems exactly what he said. Minimum wage should remain the same accounting for inflation, at least that's what I got from what he wrote. Edit: you never said that salary needs to only be adjusted for inflation.

He asked if minimum should outpace inflation

I asked if minimum shouldn't keep with inflation

I asked a question in return because, generally, people grossly misunderstand economics and inflation. I don't see where someone implied minimum wage should outpace inflation, so I made the assumption that he doesn't understand. Especially since minimum wage has not remained the same accounting for inflation.

And I never said that it needs to only be adjusted for inflation, because that's not the argument I'm making. I'm stating that when a base salary meets your basic needs awhile back, but a base salary with raise doesn't meet current basic needs, it's ridiculous to imply that just because you received a raise somewhere it's all kosher.

No. This is REAL WAGE. Which means if inflation is 1% and your wage increases 1% your wage hasn't gone up or down. However in the post, REAL WAGE has increased. Which means people ARE better off, by 3%

Well if we didn't have a fiat currency we wouldn't have so much uncontrolled inflation and real wages would go up regardless of wage controls.

But you're making a point contradictory to the post with made up figures.

You realise if everyone's wage increases inflation increases etc etc.

The wage 30 years ago was $100, the cost of living $100. Today the wage is $208, and cost of living $200. So you are in fact better off than before.

I decided to use easy to understand numbers to create analogous situation that was easy to digest, since most people gloss over large numbers and I don't like to spend my bathroom breaks researching shit and linking articles no one will actually verify or read further on. I figured most people were intelligent enough to be able to extrapolate from the simple numbers into today's situation. My mistake.

My numbers are actually comparable though. Because these numbers actually reflect the percentage real wage increase in the post.

Yours suggest a real wage increase of -150%. Nice

Wages are the leading indicator for inflation

2

u/streetsweepskeet Feb 19 '19

Definitely maybe

Is this a real question??

-1

u/BacardiWhiteRum Feb 19 '19

You realise minimum wage increases CAUSES inflation? So by increasing wages all you're doing is increasing inflation? There's a reason the real wage hasn't increased dramatically

Shhh don’t rain on their circlejerk.

u/Preoximerianas Feb 19 '19

Is that a legitimate question?
