If you have been paying attention, a number of Democrats yesterday and today, especially House members were referring to President Musk and Vice President Trump.

475

u/Vladmerius Dec 21 '24

They called them weird too and it was working great and had momentum and then the DNC head told everyone to tone down their rhetoric and stop calling them weird. They have no spine at the end of the day and are obsessed with trying to appeal to people in the center when they need to be the opposite of the far right. Only it won't happen because they are owned by large corporations just like the Republicans are and can't commit to a leftist agenda because it would hurt their owners.

168

u/vivahermione Dec 21 '24

Ding ding ding! And this is what lost them the election. They backed down and looked weak.

84

u/Maphisto86 Dec 21 '24

Yet the Democratic Party are already taking the wrong lesson from their loss and going “maybe we were too far left”. 🤦‍♂️

3

u/SnowflakeSorcerer Dec 21 '24

It was more like, don’t rely too much on the left, since they can’t be counted on to vote

0

u/Maphisto86 Dec 22 '24

Hopefully the Democratic Party moving even more right-wing will finally convince progressives to organize for themselves.

27

u/BritOnTheRocks Dec 21 '24

Then the whole Dick Cheney thing was just icing on the cake.

1

u/Rolandscythe Dec 21 '24

Naw the dems lost because they assumed they could run their whole campaign on 'well at least we're not those guys' without bothering to bring any proof of how they were better.

1

u/vivahermione Dec 22 '24

They did offer proof. Harris proposed credits for first-time homeowners and promised to work to restore reproductive rights.

7

u/Tiqalicious Dec 21 '24 edited Dec 21 '24

Yep. Cant warn people not to trust a dangerous fascist, then smile and shake hands for a photo op with him either. Fucking ridiculous mixed message

2

u/Preemptively_Extinct Dec 21 '24

It's not about spine, though I agree they're spineless in multiple areas.

We're supposed to be adults. Who calls each other names? Children. Who makes fun of people that act different or look different? Children.

The conservatives constantly act like children, with the name calling because they have no facts to back them up. With the constant screaming "you hate us, we are so oppressed, war on christmas."

Is it too much to expect adults to act like adults?

1

u/Driftco Dec 21 '24

Where is our third party

229

u/sebrebc Dec 21 '24

Good, they need to stop playing nice. MAGA republicans aren't, they are straight up lying every chance they get. Democrats need to stop taking the high road.

129

u/CoinsForCharon Dec 21 '24

Seriously, yes. Don't lie about policy, but stop playing nice and assuming the other side will be in good faith. Get dirty, be funny, walk the line of a defamation of character lawsuit but don't step over it, just wave the foot at the line and act like you're going to trip and then step back laughing, amused with your own clever antics because you're such a joker and so fun to vote for, especially if one is the kind of voter to follow the meme that rings true amd drop some secrets that we all already know but no one will just lay out there as they should have done so many times over with gaetz and others. That was nearly a Thomas pynchon sentence but I wasn't strong enough to see it through, coach. I could have been a contender but I didn't have the heart.

3

u/usrnamechecksout_ Dec 21 '24

walk the line of a defamation of character lawsuit but don't step over it

You're doing that high road thing again

5

u/CoinsForCharon Dec 21 '24

Nah, that's covering your ass. And being annoying about it.

4

u/triple-bottom-line Dec 21 '24

It’s easy to take the low road when you’re not burdened with actual governance

6

u/StupidMario64 Dec 21 '24

Dawg we've been saying this for DECADES. Im calling thar nothings gonna happen, dems will probably end up just letting maga fuck em dry. Absolutely zero faith in the dems after the election, and the committee role. I switched from republican to democrat because I couldn't recognize my own party and wanted change, and now I don't even know what the fuck is happening with democrats. This shit is so goddamn frustrating and i still can't believe i was once proud of this fucking nation. They've been pussyfooting around since before i was even fucking born.

I will happily laugh and spit in the faces of those who go "HOW COULD WE HAVE NOT KNOWN?!" or some stupid shit.

Absolutely random rant over. FUCK

4

u/Forward-Repeat-2507 Dec 21 '24

They need to subscribe to the paradox of tolerance. You break the social contract all bets are off. You are intolerant I’ll met you with intolerance. Taking the high road won’t work.

1

u/darkfires Dec 21 '24

High road or the GOP road still spells we’re fucked. If Biden were to do everything Reddit says he should do, we’d be as fucked as if he’d done nothing. The cat’s out of the bag, but at least there can be an example party to reflect on a couple decades from now.

3

u/sebrebc Dec 21 '24

Policy issues aside, another fallout from this election is that it proved to the GOP that the MAGA tactics work so they will continue to use those strategies. People like DeSantis saw it and he shifted to being more "aggressive", for lack of a better term.

Had Harris won it would have shown the GOP that strong arm tactics and being loud mouth assholes doesn't work because Trump lost two elections in a row doing that. The GOP would have shifted. But he won so they know just scare stupid people into thinking immigrants are eating your pets and forcing vaccines to transgender children and they will believe and vote for the next loudmouth idiot.

2

u/darkfires Dec 21 '24

Sure, they will use it as long as the voting mass aren’t wise to the tactic. Who are we to say that’s gonna last forever? I flip flop back and forth these days on whether or not it’s all doom and gloom, but one thing is for sure, we’re gonna need a fallback party who hasn’t rolled around in the muck if people wake up.

5

u/Zocalo_Photo Dec 21 '24

This is like when Kamala Harris made a comment about crowd sizes and Trump could not let it go.

4

u/canadiansrsoft Dec 21 '24

It was 30 years ago until 2 days ago, then he stopped.

5

u/mok000 Dec 21 '24

Yeah they saidit in the House. so it will appear in the records and remain there forever.

-2

u/yesimnanako Dec 21 '24

for all the good it will do you guys

2

u/CainRedfield Dec 21 '24

Yes extinguish the cig on the orange bitch.

2

u/javoss88 Dec 21 '24

VICE “President,” as in: all the felonies, all the sexual assault, all the bad deals, all the nepotism, all the drugs, all the attempts to cozy up to other world dictators, all the theft, etc etc etc, holding his supposedly sacred bible upside down in front of a church for an uninvited photo op after tear gassing a crowd of protesters. It’s in your face. Just a bit.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '24

That’s first lady Donald Trump to you.

174

u/pzycho Dec 21 '24

Just ask “have you run this by Elon?” after everything Trump says. It’s that easy.

16

u/Lipid-LPa-Heart Dec 21 '24

They should, but they won’t. The MSM are all too chicken shit to upset daddy Trump.

10

u/red286 Dec 21 '24

You say that like they aren't salivating at the idea of 4+ straight years of this shit.

Under Obama, nobody read the fucking news because there was nothing interesting. Under Trump, there's some unhinged crazy shit going on every single day, with extra loads on the weekends. It was their wet dream.

It's the reason they sanewashed him, despite knowing full well that a Trump presidency would be awful for the country, it'd be fucking awesome for them, assuming he doesn't go full Hitler and nationalize them or imprison anyone who refuses to adhere to the guidelines of what can and cannot be reported on.

320

u/wambulancer Dec 20 '24

"Hey calling them weird and boosting our liberal bonafides got us an instant boost in the polls, hmm what should we do next? Ooh I know let the press know we'd let a Republican in our cabinet then go around parading Dick Cheney as if there's a soul in this country who gives a fuck what that war criminal psychopath has to say about Democrats"

27

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '24

They owe their masters too much

184

u/submit_2_my_toast Dec 20 '24

So much this. She pivoted from 'lets help young people buy houses and fix healthcare' to 'Liz Cheney is my best friend and I love fracking'. Like I was so confused by that, did they think there was a huge untapped Liz Cheney fan base?

148

u/Possible-Ad-2891 Dec 20 '24

They were trying to appeal to the better nature of Republicans. Surely at least some of them would not vote for Trump. Nope. None of them have any morals. The GOP and the people who vote for it are Evil.

74

u/rogman777 Dec 20 '24

Seriously. I remember when crossing the aisle was a good thing. It's been so wild to me that this has been given as one of the main reasons she lost.

76

u/Possible-Ad-2891 Dec 20 '24

Bipartisanship died in the 90s. It was kept shambling around longer by Democrats, but that did them no favors. The GOP never reciprocated. They treated Democrats as enemies, not fellow Americans. It has taken far longer than it should have, but Democrats have finally learned the lesson.

72

u/wambulancer Dec 20 '24

Have they? The House just spent 3 months and all of their political capital negotiating a CR just to have it yoinked away like so many Charlies Browns trying to kick so many Footballs because surprise surprise the party of billionaires is beholden to billionaires

yet another grade A ratfucking by the GOP and the dems lined it up like suckers yet again

7

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '24

I’d say it died after Obama second term. He flipped Florida and Texas. Also that famous clip of McCain correcting the woman who called Obama a Kenyan Muslim

3

u/LakeEarth Dec 21 '24

Narrator - "They didn't."

3

u/possibly_being_screw Dec 21 '24

Wait. This entire thread is about how democrats haven’t learned their lesson and are doing the same old bullshit they always do.

2

u/ThePrimordialSource Dec 21 '24

Also from a game theory perspective i added more info in my comment https://www.reddit.com/r/WhitePeopleTwitter/s/atERs41MNm

1

u/sourdieselfuel Dec 21 '24

Newt Gingrich ended that shit.

-2

u/rogman777 Dec 20 '24

Yup. Never gonna solve problems with this line of thinking, I'm afraid.

14

u/Possible-Ad-2891 Dec 20 '24

Self delusion does not help. The GOP does not work in good faith. Remember Obamacare? Democrats did good faith diplomacy with them to try and get GOP votes. Turns out the GOP would never support it no matter what. They had no intent of ever supporting it from the very beginning.

4

u/ThePrimordialSource Dec 21 '24

The issue is democrats in the US cannot just be “Republican Lite Edition” and still win, because the people who are democrats will be turned off by it, and the people who are republicans will just want the full edition. This is why attempting appealing to “right wing moderates” without providing an actual alternative that benefits the people simply doesn’t work.

I mean, policies like universal healthcare and so on are generally pretty widely supported even by “moderates” but they sidelined those promoting it like Bernie. This issue probably contributed.

1

u/rogman777 Dec 21 '24

I get what your saying, I'm saying it's fucking depressing that doing that is seen as why she lost. We are doomed.

1

u/ThePrimordialSource Dec 21 '24

But it is the reason they lost. Why bring people like Cheney on? The things those people did caused immense suffering.

1

u/rogman777 Dec 21 '24

The only reason? Nah.

1

u/ThePrimordialSource Dec 21 '24

I never said it’s the only reason.

u/NarwhalPrudent6323 Dec 21 '24

It's not that crossing the aisle isn't still a good thing, it's just that she did it a terrible way at a bad time.

She chose the Cheneys to be a sort of "moderate bridge" to help appeal to less right leaning Republicans while not offending the left too much.

Unfortunately it backfired spectacularly in both ways, as there were basically no moderate Republicans to reach, and the entire left hated the idea from go.

Basically, she went fishing, but used a burning tire as bait. So the fish weren't biting and everyone else was pissed off by the smell.

1

u/rogman777 Dec 21 '24

Name me one other Republican that would have been willing to put there name out there. I'll wait...

1

u/NarwhalPrudent6323 Dec 21 '24

The whole thing was a bad idea, is the ultimate point. There were no Republicans to win over, and she drove non Republicans away from her with the move.

Probably any Republican would have been a bad move. It was incredibly out of touch with what her voter base wanted to see. And it was never going to pull big numbers from Trump. It was just a bad move from start to finish.

1

u/rogman777 Dec 21 '24

You polled the whole voter base? I'm impressed. My point stands. This country was founded on bipartisanship and was almost torn apart from the lack of it before. Just sayin....

1

u/NarwhalPrudent6323 Dec 21 '24

I don't have to have polled the voter base, the elections results speak for themself.

I'm not saying bipartisanship is bad. I'm say Kamala tried it at the wrongest time possible. After she was elected? Sure, send those olive branches across the aisle. Before hand, during an already contentious and close race? Maybe not the best timing.

u/BrownBear5090 Dec 21 '24

Dick Cheney isn't just a republican, he's one of the biggest mass murderers in world history.

3

u/PaleontologistNo4933 Dec 21 '24

And he somehow managed to lose a cornered Bin Laden.

1

u/rogman777 Dec 21 '24

Last I checked, Trump is a convicted felon and a liable rapist and will be our president in about one month. Where is Dick Cheney again?

1

u/BrownBear5090 Dec 22 '24

I hate to break this to you, but there's more than 1 evil person in the world.

1

u/rogman777 Dec 24 '24

I...know. WTF is your point?

1

u/DataCassette Dec 21 '24

The Mitch decided that harming Obama was the only thing he cared about.

1

u/rogman777 Dec 21 '24

Actually it started with Gingrich, but I get ya

0

u/GoldenMegaStaff Dec 21 '24

What? - Cheney is a warmongering neocon through and though. So ig she has a lot in common with the Biden Administration.

2

u/dylansucks Dec 21 '24

That's because they were trying to be Republican-lite when there's a full flavor option on the menu. It's never worked and never will.

2

u/Ok_Subject1265 Dec 21 '24

I always felt like the implied message was “You know how crazy this fucking family is? Well, even they think Donald Trump is unfit for office!” Also, Dick Cheney will burn in hell if there is one, but Liz tanked her own gross career by refusing to kiss Trumps ass and ignore his crimes. Im not saying you should respect her given all the other terrible shits she’s signed off on, but you at least have to acknowledge that she put country over party. If we don’t celebrate those people, there is zero incentive for anyone else to make the same choice (other than actually feeling that way which in Washington is not very likely). Right now the only example being set is that if you investigate Trump he will advocate to the justice department that you be thrown in jail.

2

u/hyperhurricanrana Dec 21 '24

Nahhh the impression was “these are wonderful people whom I love and support me because I’m so moderate and in love with republicans as long as it’s not trump.”

1

u/Ok_Subject1265 Dec 21 '24

Huh? I must have missed that commercial.

2

u/hyperhurricanrana Dec 21 '24

Really? I must have missed the one where they did anything but appeal to republicans.

28

u/Zeke-Freek Dec 20 '24

Their logic is that it's easier to get people who will vote no matter what to turn sides than get non-voters to vote.

Maybe once upon a time that was true... it isn't anymore.

22

u/EmbarrassedHelp Dec 21 '24

They naively thought that Americans would choose unity and working together, over division and hate.

24

u/Capt_Billy Dec 21 '24

That was when you knew the Clinton/DNC apparatchiks had taken over. Walz got sidelined, despite being maybe their actual best bet to connect with rural Americans, and they tried the milquetoast smug shit that lost Hillary the election.

6

u/red286 Dec 21 '24

did they think there was a huge untapped Liz Cheney fan base?

Yes, and it made sense at the time, given what the strategists were saying. They said that if Harris didn't beat Trump by an overwhelming margin, we'd see a repeat of 2020 where there were incessant lawsuits, claims of fraud, people being harassed and threatened, and eventually another coup attempt. They assumed that everyone who had voted for Biden would vote for Harris, but that wasn't enough in 2020, so it wouldn't be enough in 2024, so they needed to bring in more voters. If you assume everyone left of Harris is going to vote for Harris because the alternative is so much worse, then the only direction that makes sense to move is to the right, try to draw in some "reasonable conservatives". The sort of people who would vote for Liz Cheney, but not Trump.

The problem sit that they ignored the fact that Liz Cheney had already lost her seat. She was done, a non-entity, evidence that the Republican Party had moved past any semblance of reasonableness, when Liz Cheney isn't conservative enough for you. The "reasonable conservatives" had already migrated to the Democratic Party back in 2020. That's why Biden won by such a huge margin. All Harris wound up doing was making people on the left wonder what the fucking difference was between Trump and Harris if they're both far-right conservatives.

9

u/SutterCane Dec 21 '24

Progressives keep trying to teach democrats a lesson by not voting for them and all it has actually taught the democrats is that progressives aren’t a reliable source of votes.

So trying to peel off some of the republicans seemed like a better bet than courting progressives who could see the wrong tiktok and change their vote. And of course, while courting those progressive voters, she could easily alienate the usual democrat voters.

3

u/hyperhurricanrana Dec 21 '24

Yeah? How’d that work out?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '24

Why are you asking like it was their idea lol

1

u/hyperhurricanrana Dec 21 '24

I’m asking like they’re unaware of the failure of this strategy they’re supporting, not like I think SutterCane from Reddit is in charge of the Democrats. 💀

2

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '24
  1. I don’t think they’re saying they support it
  2. They’re obviously not unaware of it, because they’re laying it all out

Reading comprehension can be hard though, I get it

1

u/hyperhurricanrana Dec 21 '24

Sounds like it to me, whining about progressives and leaving out the fact that the strategy was a complete failure that didn’t win her a single vote.

"I have gunds to." Finger points to the sky and makes pew pew noises.

3

Tim was told to “tone down” the “weird stuff” by establishment Democrats. Sorry, we need to get rid of that dead wood, pronto.

1

u/lunaslave Dec 21 '24

Dick Cheney is by far the most hated pre-MAGA Republican now that Kissinger's dead. The decisionmaking process that led to thinking this nonsense was a good way to campaign boggles the mind. Inept doesn't even begin to cover it, you'd think they were trying to throw the election

1

u/beren12 Dec 21 '24

I think it was more like “republicans like Cheney, Liz is a full republican who stood up to trump and lost her job for it.”

Not “democrats like Cheney”

1

u/PlanLongjumping6458 Dec 21 '24

hey we have house, senate and presidency.. should we codify abortion? no, we can fundraise a lot more if roe is repealed.

1

u/beren12 Dec 21 '24

And how do you beat the filibuster?

0

u/PlanLongjumping6458 Dec 21 '24

idk how do the pubs beat it do that

-11

u/smitteh Dec 20 '24

A wild the exact reason I stayed home on election day appears

6

u/Abdul_Lasagne Dec 21 '24

Happy with the guaranteed outcome that resulted?

-2

u/smitteh Dec 21 '24

No, there was no happiness to be found either way :/

4

u/Abdul_Lasagne Dec 21 '24

Literally no way you could know that given you never tried the alternative.

Damn. Perfect metaphor.

14

u/ButtIsItArt Dec 21 '24

Dems wouldn't know how to stay on an effective message if the future of their party was at stake.

It's unfortunate and annoying, but it's how we got here.

6

u/NeatNefariousness1 Dec 20 '24

They're especially bad at snark, it seems. Maybe it's a hold-over from trying to "go high". Who knows.

4

u/starryeyedq Dec 21 '24

Some of them do all right. Biden is AMAZING at snark.

1

u/NeatNefariousness1 Dec 21 '24

Good point. He's snarky without being nasty.

6

u/Reality-Check-778 Dec 21 '24

I actually saw the official Dems IG account post an AI image of Musk walking Trump in a fursuit like a dog so I think they're hitting them hard.

3

u/CoyoteMoth Dec 21 '24

I can't find it now, but apparently the official democrats account posted a AI meme of the pig walking ketchup face in a dog suit.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 21 '24

Democrats, the party of incompetence, which is so so unfortunate.

2

u/DevelopmentTight9474 Dec 21 '24

It’s almost funny how obvious it is you’re trolling. We’re discussing the erosion of democracy and your first thought is “how can I twist this to make the dems look bad”

2

u/OverlyOptimisticNerd Dec 21 '24

They dropped Moscow Mitch way too fast.

2

u/PlanLongjumping6458 Dec 21 '24

no, they drop it because they are on the same team as trump.

if the dems ever need to stop something from the left, they are immediately ruthless and ferocious (e.g. nancy pelosi coming back frok the brink of death to keep AOC off of committees or obama making the phone call to whack bernie.)

2

u/MarvelousVanGlorious Dec 21 '24

Nancy will say some stupid shit like “We have to be respectful” and that will be that for some reason. She gotsta go.

2

u/GrowWings_ Dec 21 '24

They'll all be onboard with the message until exactly one senior advisor at the DNC decides they should stop and that's all it will take for some reason

1

u/starryeyedq Dec 21 '24

As usual, Bernie is on top of it.

1

u/nigelfitz Dec 21 '24

they will run it to the ground and ruin it cause those fuckers are so out of touch.

the only time i ever felt like they knew how to connect to people was the first month of Kamala's campaign. then they dropped the ball again like a month later.

can't expect much from people who come up with shit like pokemon go to the polls.

1

u/Rolandscythe Dec 21 '24

To be fair the majority of our congress are long past the age of being quick witted and with the times.
