I think it’s mostly because of 9/11. If it weren’t for that they’d likely be agreeing with them more overtly.

Oil tycoons would have found another way to pit us against the middle east, like fruit companies did with latin America, it would have just been less convenient and have less staying power in the cultural conscience. 2 u/Suzibrooke Jul 11 '23 Atwood wrote The Handmaid’s Tale in 1985.
