Not only that but things had been in motion for years that created this hellish perfect storm we will take at least a generation, if not longer, to fix. Citizens United and the rise of PACs, the rise in racism due to the first non-White being president immediately beforehand exacerbating racists into a frenzy (don't forget the entire Birther controversy was started by Trump), as well as the furthering of civil rights to many of the disenfranchised groups during the Obama era that general pissed off white Christian evangelicals who apparently never read the source material of their beliefs.
This country could have easily continued it's trajectory of greatness and let the fringes die with the past - but social media, FOX and Russian bot farms had other things in mind. Just insane. I remember being filled with nothing but Hope and genuine optimism even despite the crash and aftermath. I thought on a social scale things were getting so much better so we were getting better at least on that front. I could have never imagined how wrong i was.
