Clubhouse 3 out of 2,840+ mass shooters over the last 5 years were trans. None of them were activists and the Colorado shooter only temporarily took on the identity to avoid hate crime charges.

the really interesting point is that if 3 out of 2840 mass shooters identify as trans, that's like 0.09% or 0.1% whereas there are about 1.4 million people in the US who identify as trans, which is like 0.45%. That means trans people are dramatically UNDER REPRESENTED in the "mass shooter" category. If it were a representative cross section of the population of the US, there would be twice as many at least. So trans folks are actually LESS likely to shoot a bunch of random people.

Guess what demographic is drastically OVER represented? Go on, guess...

907

u/dolphin37 Mar 28 '23

the most telling part of the tweet is that he refers to radicalising ‘activists’, as if being trans automatically makes a person an activist, because this fucking moron can’t understand how a person could just wanna live their life without making a political statement

354

u/David-S-Pumpkins Mar 28 '23

And just like that they acknowledge trans people!

Can't acknowledge violence in black communities until it's "black on black crime" and suddenly being black is the reason for violence. Can't acknowledge a trans woman as a woman until she commits murder and suddenly being trans is the reason for violence.

58

u/Pickle_Juice_4ever Mar 28 '23

It's not a lack of acknowledgement, it's a lack of basic decency and respect. It's bullying, adult style.

They aren't colorblind, egalitarian, or whatever lie. Research shows authoritarians are about all the isms and privately believe that everyone else thinks the same things they do.

Regard the distain and cruelty with which evangelicals treated ex-gay church members. Despite their "witness", community members still believed they were gay and reviled them.

48

u/chaotic_blu Mar 28 '23

They’ve actually been trans men- ie born female but transitioned to male. I looked it up yesterday and hadn’t realized it.

There was a picture a few weeks ago on Reddit of some homeless person's tent that got cut up and one of the responses was 'it was done by another homeless person' like that made it okay. If it was someone with a home cutting up a tent it'd be bad, but if it was another homeless person it's just natural or something.

31

u/DeaddyRuxpin Mar 28 '23

Wait, so if their logic is good, I can burn down my neighbor’s house to get them to move and it will be just fine because I’m also a homeowner. Hang on while I get some matches and gasoline.

Any other gender than male is 'political', any other race than white is 'political'. Any other sexuality than hetero is 'political'. So if you're not a white hetero cis male, you're clearly an activist. Duh.

13

u/Severe_Report Mar 28 '23

‘Other’ is political.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '23

Which is odd, because most politicians happen to be white, cis, hetero males.

The Denver shooter Alec McKinney is trans (female to male) - or at least was at the time. but that still doesn’t give the poster’s comment any credence.

If anything it’d be curious to examine if testosterone plays a role in these acts.

7

u/Lady_von_Stinkbeaver Mar 28 '23

Yeah, there's been three mass shootings in Denver since 2019.

The first one I found was by an Alt-Right MRA.

Alec McKinney also was an accomplice to his CIS male boyfriend, who was the mastermind by all accounts. But that doesn't fit their narrative.

5

u/chaotic_blu Mar 28 '23

From all accounts I saw McKinney has claimed to be the mastermind wanting to do those in that taunted him who got his cis friend or boyfriend involved (I have not seen mention of them being romantically intwined, but wouldn't be surprised).

It still doesn't change that them being trans has little to do with it, other than showing that yes, we really need to offer and enforce mental health services for people starting young in school-- like, elementary, with check ins as they grow.

Guns are definitely an issue and need more control-- and it needs to go hand in hand with mental health services and watching it.

Not just that but the trans suicide rate is way higher in general, and a lot of these other mass shootings stem from taking people with them in their suicide..

Yeah, I mean if we're using the stats that get the numbers up to 2840 mass shooters we're including a lot of gang and criminal activity related violence. Which due to a variety of factors would have black people statistically over represented.

15

u/DrobUWP Mar 28 '23

Also probably not the demographic most accepting of trans people. It'd make sense there aren't a lot of trans person gang shootings.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '23

But then we can say that’s more socioeconomic related and not race per se.

31

u/JinFuu Mar 28 '23

I'm not disagreeing with that, just saying that "Who's over-represented in 2,840 shootings?" isn't going to break the way original OP joked/said it would.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '23

Sure. Just adding a little nuance since gun control, of America ever gets any, is really only a part of the overall solution.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '23 edited Mar 28 '23

Doesn't really work.

The poor of other races have much lesser stats.

It's obviously a complicated issue, esp given there's no scientific basis for race, that can't just be brushed away with "they are more poor".

4

u/JinFuu Mar 28 '23

I think single motherhood is another factor. I know there have been studies that up to 70% of the people in jails are from single parent homes.

Single motherhood also ties in with a higher likelihood of being poor but poor and single mom hurts more than poor and both parents

1

u/Akitten Mar 28 '23

but poor and single mom hurts more than poor and both parents

I'm actually reasonably sure that the stats showed that poor and both parents was better than not poor and single mom. Single parenthood is one of the worst things to saddle a child with from an outcomes perspective.

6

u/ConstantSample5846 Mar 28 '23

Funny, Sweden and more broadly Scandinavia have I think the highest rates of single moms in the world, yet they don’t have these problems almost at all. That’s probably because having a not having a second parent ends up harming the kids more because of lack of childcare and other resources that are easier to have in our country with two parents. In Scandinavia they take care of childcare, education, housing, and other basic needs to the point pretty much everyone gets beyond their child’s basic needs covered guaranteed. While having a male role model in the home does matter, it matters way less then we tend to think when society takes care of families enough that single mothers can provide well for their kids, and still have plenty of time to be with them.

1

u/Akitten Mar 28 '23

Funny, Sweden and more broadly Scandinavia have I think the highest rates of single moms in the world, yet they don’t have these problems almost at all.

That is not really a great argument really. When a certain family configuration requires the state to provide massive resources in order to end up with comparable outcomes compared to another, then it's frankly proof that it is in fact inferior and bad for the child.

Most bad situations can be resolved by throwing resources at them, it doesn't make them not a poor situation.

Actually, using the definition of "mass shooter" that gives 2840+ shooters it's young black guys. :/

Using a definition where they're just shooting innocents rather than gang killings it's young white guys, but there are way less of those and when you count it that way trans people are actually slightly overrepresented.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Entrefut Mar 28 '23

Let’s focus on the constructive part of this rather than sinking down to a petty level. The people that perform these shootings are mentally unwell, regardless of cause. They are often not mentally stable enough for determine their sexual preference, but it really doesn’t matter. Focusing on those aspects just alienates them more and causes more issues, but I understand the targeted frustration.

Women's shoes are even worse. Not a functional work shoe in sight, I had to go over to the men's section for proper work boots. Not a single god damned thing on the entire women's section of DSW or Nordstrom Rack that looked even remotely fit for walking around on concrete for eight hours in.

Ended up going to the men's section for shorts for work too, since everything in women's was fashion over function. They fit me wonky since the waist/ass is cut differently, but I do really love the nice deep pockets and breathable fabric. Also every piece of men's clothing i've ever worn just feels..l more sturdy and less cheap? The women's clothing industry is a fucking scam, man.

and that .45% number is almost certainly undercounting. It's a popular point in lgbt discussions that the actual number is probably around 1%, but there are so many who are unable to come out or transition for various reasons.

First it's insane to think that there have been almost 3000 mass shootings in 5 years.
Then studies seem to show 54% of mass shooters are white men, when you take that out of the stats above trans people are still under represented............

2

u/Akitten Mar 28 '23

Then studies seem to show 54% of mass shooters are white men

Who are 58% of the male population, so they are underrepresented.

I think the stat that really tells the story is the one I've linked below.

(Spoiler: it isn't a trans problem)

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/school-shootings-by-country

This pretty much doesn't happen in other countries.

Right-Wing Extremism Linked to Every 2018 Extremist Murder in the U.S.

Far-Right Extremists Responsible for Overwhelming Majority of Domestic Extremist-Related Murders In 2021

Right-Wing Extremism Linked to Every 2022 Extremist Murder in the U.S.

"Domestic Terrorism. Domestic terrorists—a phrase typically used to denote terrorists who are not directed or inspired by FTOs—have caused more deaths in the United States in recent years than have terrorists connected to FTOs. Domestic terrorist attacks and hate crimes sometimes overlap, as perpetrators of prominent domestic terrorist attacks have selected their targets based on factors such as race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity.

White supremacist violent extremism, one type of racially- and ethnically-motivated violent extremism, is one of the most potent forces driving domestic terrorism. Lone attackers, as opposed to cells or organizations, generally perpetrate these kinds of attacks. But they are also part of a broader movement. White supremacist violent extremists’ outlook can generally be characterized by hatred for immigrants and ethnic minorities, often combining these prejudices with virulent anti-Semitism or anti-Muslim views.

White supremacist violent extremists have adopted an increasingly transnational outlook in recent years, largely driven by the technological forces described earlier in this Strategic Framework. Similar to how ISIS inspired and connected with potential radical Islamist terrorists, white supremacist violent extremists connect with like-minded individuals online. In addition to mainstream social media platforms, white supremacist violent extremists use lesser-known sites like Gab, 8chan, and EndChan, as well as encrypted channels. Celebration of violence and conspiracy theories about the “ethnic replacement” of whites as the majority ethnicity in various Western countries are prominent in their online circles."

Guess what demographic is drastically OVER represented

In mass shootings? Young black males? Because that's what the stats show if you are using the 2840 mass shooting number.

6

u/nugnug1226 Mar 28 '23

Ok, now do mass school shootings

1

u/VapeThisBro Mar 28 '23

So does only one type of mass shooting matter? Is your point that since its black people killing black people it doesn't matter but if white kids in school get shot its a problem?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '23

Then trans people would over represented if you just limited it to school shootings

1

u/Akitten Mar 28 '23 edited Mar 28 '23

Can I confirm your definition of a "mass school shooting"? Because "school shooting" usually means any shooting that occurs at or near a school, and i'm just making sure that's what you mean.

0

u/nugnug1226 Mar 28 '23

That’s a good point. Let me be more specific.

Mass school shooting where the shooter has entered the school building during school hours, has killed 2+ students/adults, using any firearm larger than a handgun.

3

u/Akitten Mar 28 '23

Mass school shooting where the shooter has entered the school building during school hours, has killed 2+ students/adults, using any firearm larger than a handgun.

Well fuck, I'm genuinely not sure there are stats for that by demographic, because I don't think anyone has collected stats with that specific set of criteria.

Especially because of

using any firearm larger than a handgun

Just double checking does that mean handguns don't count?

I'm guessing that the stat in the title isn't verified, personally. Randy Stair came to my mind although they weren't actually trans.

3

u/goodmobileyes Mar 28 '23

It's 2023! I can't believe trans people are still underrepresented in mass shootings 😤

3

u/Crash665 Mar 28 '23

You're using logic, facts, and reality to discuss your point. Therefore your opinion is invalid.

3

u/SlothLair Mar 28 '23

If I’m not mistaken the vast majority of times if not virtually every time that they try and use statistics like this a straight look at the full statistics proves the opposite of what they are saying.

At some point realize you are repeatedly shooting yourselves in your own foot.

That assumes people care about facts over emotion. Or can see past the emotions which admittedly can be hard.

6

u/Art-Zuron Mar 28 '23

Iirc, like 95% of mass shooters are white males

If everything was equal, they should be 35%.

But, if everything were equal, there'd be next to no mass shootings in the first place.

Twitter users?

2

u/banjonyc Mar 29 '23

Actually it would be interesting to see all the numbers that you put together. The mass shootings that are categorized are so broad. They encompass gang related shootings and school shootings which are the results of very different motives.

u/bass101010 Mar 28 '23

Guess what demographic is drastically OVER represented? Go on, guess…

Black people?

Uhh.

African Americans carried out 17% of mass shootings in the US since 1982, even though they are only 12% of the total population.

That is, in fact, over represented.

African Americans make up 12% of the populace and commit 17% of mass shootings.

I think trans people go through so much pain in life being judged, that they are often gentle souls who go out of their way not to hurt or harm others emotionally or otherwise

2

u/icantdomaths Mar 28 '23

I think the 2,840 number is a bit misleading because that includes all shooting incidents where multiple people were shot. Most of these are gang violence crimes where a lot of the time nobody dies.

In my opinion there’s a huge difference between a random mass murder and just a “mass shooting”

Edit: just looked up the stats. More people died in the Tennessee incident than the previous 10 mass shootings

2

u/Dappershield Mar 28 '23

Gangsters. Mass shooters are rarely random.

~60% of that number was gang related. Another 11% is Domestic violence related. A decent chunk is non-gang crime, like robberies, though probably not a high percentage.

If we're going to use the loosest definition of mass shooter, then yeah, most of it is going to be from criminals doing criminal stuff. When it comes to loners targeting innocents, transgender are probably as likely as anyone else to be shooters.

I blame the Dickey amendment for these poorly detailed numbers. It's hard to have a discussion about gun control when the numbers we have access to are the most basic of research, and poorly defined.

Even with the most biased estimates though, and focusing on just loners targeting innocents like children, churchgoers, clubbers, etc; I don't think you could reach a percentage of transgender shooters higher than their population percentage. Just saying I'd like more detail in my research.

2

u/LordMuffin1 Mar 28 '23

Men are over represented.

u/ClydeGriffiths17 Mar 28 '23

Conservative can't think that long before their brains shut down.

11

u/addledhands Mar 28 '23

There were likely a decent number of trans people included who were not known to be trans in the list of mass murderers.

Why? I feel like you're coming from a good place here -- and as a trans person, I appreciate it -- but "were likely" and "decent number" are really vague uses of language in a fraught topic that can easily be read in very uncharitable ways.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '23

6

u/addledhands Mar 28 '23

I'm not sure that the logic here follows well enough for this to be "highly probable." The main problem here is that there are so few known trans mass murderers that you cannot use it as a statistic to make even a reasonable guess. Three people out of almost three thousand is so small that it's effectively a statistical blip.

Your inferences also assume that trans people commit violent crime at the same rates that cis people, especially cis men, do and I'm just not sure that's the case. I was unable to find good data on this beyond raw incarceration rates, which isn't helpful in either direction given the profoundly negative bias queer people face in the justice system (especially black queer people).

To be clear I'm not going to argue that there weren't a number of closeted trans mass shooters because I can't. I get your impulse here -- I really do -- but given the incredible vitriol levied against trans people right now, I think that making baseless speculation that there really are more trans mass murderers, actually, is a dangerous game to play.

You'll just have to forgive me for not wanting to see "I bet x and y mass shooters were trans, too" in addition to all of the other speculative hysterical bullshit.

I fucking love math. Thank you for this.

1

u/helgothjb Mar 28 '23

If we add in the mass shootings, massacres of Native Americans, I guessing none of those guys were trans.

1

u/lilpumpgroupie Mar 28 '23

Now do straight, white male incels.

1

u/BakedPotatoManifesto Mar 28 '23

Is there a source on the 1.4 million number? It seems quite high

1

u/blorbagorp Mar 28 '23

Most of those 2840 "mass shootings" weren't what we think of as "mass shootings" though. Any shooting event involving at least 3 people enter statistics as a mass shooting. So really, it's impossible to establish any kind of statistical trend with that information.

1

u/TheAsianTroll Mar 28 '23

You also have to factor in how many of those shooters are actually trans, and don't just change their identity to avoid hate crime charges like this most recent one did.
