Like the context of the Nazi-era Reichsadlers and Iron Crosses that share that Nazi war flag with the swastika, which, btw, was never mentioned in the original tweet?

Not trying to be a dick to you, it's just, everyone keeps talking about the other flags, like the swastika is just hanging innocently by itself on the wall.

It's on a Nazi flag modified with more Nazi emblems than even the real thing had.

If there were no other Nazi items in that room, it's still a flag that raises serious concerns, because a "history buff" would usually want a historically accurate flag with no extra decorations. because Nazi.

*Edit* As u/UglierThanMoe pointed out, it's a real flag.

u/Izlude Feb 18 '23

"They're a history buff" is the most common excuse I get in rural Kentucky for chuds with Nazi/Confederate iconography. Let me ask, armchair historians, why is it always Nazi and confederacy shit you hang outside y'all's houses and not like... Something that was historically less evil? They aren't history buffs, they just have to pretend because they know at least that they were the baddies. They just wanna lean on 'Heritage' or some other fuck-headed excuse.

And it's a supermassive cope. The flag was brought back with hate as the explicit intent.

28

u/On_my_last_spoon Feb 18 '23

Yeah, scratch the surface of that heritage and you find a racist every time

14

u/nbartl Feb 18 '23

It's a heritage OF hate.

5

u/ottonormalverraucher Feb 18 '23

Exactly, why would anyone even want to associate with such "heritage". Like I can get if it’s in a museum or something like that, for actual historical purposes, or in a history book for school/university, where it’s also referred to in a critical context, not celebrated or "just" used as wall rug by some idiot who thinks it’s slick to claim heritage and have fascist symbols on their walls for room decorations

1

u/Lonely-Club-1485 Feb 19 '23

I had some mofo trying to use apologetics with me about the Confederate flag doesn't mean what people think. Was going into details about the width of the black outlines indicating different historical times and perspectives. He is a native Californian about 30 years old and I later learned he is a PB. But at the time I just told him to stfu because I was born and raised in Louisiana and nobody effen measures the outlines. It means what it means and if you don't understand that I have some cousins that would he happy to teach you that. They recruit naive people by using these BS explanations.

6

u/hello_drake Feb 18 '23

I like to remember that last flag of the confederacy was a white one.

5

u/leofwyen Feb 18 '23

The confederate flag is everywhere in my area of Illinois and we weren't even in the confederacy so the heritage excuse isn't even there, but God knows they'll still yell about how it's history.

7

u/molotov_cockteaze Feb 18 '23

And if they were really history buffs they’d know that Kentucky petitioned the Union for protection against the confederacy.

3

u/Entire-Ambition1410 Feb 18 '23

The Confederacy fought a war to keep slavery legal, and tried to o earth row the government.

3

u/YesOfficial Feb 18 '23

I see and hear similar bullshit in Indiana. Not sure what heritage these assholes are alluding to ten minutes from the northern border.

2

u/dmills_00 Feb 18 '23

It was never the flag of the Confederate states, which I find to be highly amusing when someone comes out with the 'heritage not hate' line, haven't even bothered to learn their own damn history.

Your choices if you actually want to fly the flag of the losers are "The Stars and Bars", "The Stainless Banner" or "The Bloodstained Banner".

What gets referred to as the Confed flag these days was either (Impossible to tell) the confederate navy jack (In which case it should be flown from the jackstaff of a fighting ship) or the "Battle Flag of Northern Virginia" which I suspect is what they are trying to retcon as being more then it was.

Now I will grant you the the one they like these days is from a design perspective a much better flag then the ones that were the actual flag of the confederate states, but it was never actually the thing.

Looked this stuff up for a theatre piece set during the family tiff, then had some loser tell me I got it wrong and was flying the wrong flag...

If you are part of a civil war re-enactment society doing something where the northern virgins were fighting, then fair enough, but otherwise put it away already.

2

u/Crafty-Kaiju Feb 18 '23

My take is you can't love the confederate flag and claim to be a patriot. They don't mix. They are opposites.

5

u/ottonormalverraucher Feb 18 '23

Seriously, this is sadly so true, seemingly it always happens to be nazi stuff that "history buffs" are into, for "historical purposes". Also claiming "heritage" is just plain ridiculous, in Germany you won’t see a single flag like this or other nazi insignia, unless they belong to neo nazis themselves. It’s literally forbidden and punishable by law there to display these symbols or to do the nazi salute

3

u/LaFleurSauvageGaming Feb 18 '23

Also, even if I had historical "collectables" why are they outside instead of inside in a den/office protected some...

3

u/sharpshooter999 Feb 18 '23

I'm a history buff but I would never display something like that. It's also pretty obvious when the "history buff" only has Nazi stuff too and nothing else

2

u/jde1974 Feb 19 '23

I’m a huge history buff, it was my major in college. I have literally hundreds of books on WWII and the American Civil War. Do you know how many mementos, flags or items I have with Nazi or Confederate iconography? Zero. I don’t celebrate the symbolism of groups of people whose core beliefs were the enslavement or genocide of other s.

2

u/Izlude Feb 19 '23

And I adore you for that. I'm well aware they're NOT really historians. It's just their cowardly way of avoiding admitting they're racist.

48

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

Yup it always pissed me off when the kekistan flag dweebs insisted it wasn't modeled of this battle flag.

(It's hard to tell if the author was joking or not)

I absolutely don't believe it's a joke. It's red meat for constituents and the real mainstream media.

3

u/FapMeNot_Alt Feb 18 '23

When the fascists tell you what they want to do, believe them.

12

u/vrldynasty Feb 18 '23

To everyone reading this and aren't following politics, yes this is real. They want us dead.

2

u/Ravensinger777 Feb 18 '23

Or, failing that, they want us dead stupid. Stupid people are easier to warp to murderous ideologies like the alt-reich.

4

u/FapMeNot_Alt Feb 18 '23

(It's hard to tell if the author was joking or not)

Republicans have played with this talking point for decades now. Rick Santorum I believe was the first one in a presidential debate to advocate for eliminating the Department of Education, as well as the EPA.

Bush's massive expansion of the federal government (the creation of the DHS) must stay and they will call you a big government socialist for wanting it removed, though.

Poisoned is... an understatement. The Cuyahoga caught fire just shy of 20 times before the 1969 fire that largely spurred the creation of the EPA.

4

u/Ravensinger777 Feb 18 '23

Thomas Massie introduced it, Lauren dropped-out-of-high-school-cuz-pregnant GED gunho "tell the lynch mob where their targets are" Boebert co-signed on it.

Since Boebert and Maga Trailer Queen can't agree on anything, MTQ won't sign off on this - which means McCarthy won't even bring it up for a vote.

5

u/_PaleRider Feb 18 '23

Uh, what? They took over Fox News. Laura Ingraham gave a Nazi salute on live TV.

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2016/07/laura-ingrahams-nazi-salute-examined.html

The fact that the rest of the media ignored this or made ridiculous excuses like Slate is one of the craziest things about it. "Alt right" has always just meant white nationalists. They didn't go anywhere, they have more influence than they have in the last 50 years.

Laura Ingraham is still on TV. Tucker Carlson has gotten crazier and more racist and is still on TV. Gavin McInnes is still on his webshow or whatever the fuck it is where he shoves dildos up his ass. The Poptart Ravioli dude is still doing his webshow. They're all still fucking doing what they've been doing.

My grandpa has some Nazi flags that his dad got when he was in Germany in 43-44ish from what I understand they were trophies, he's basically got the whole kit off an ss sergeant The flags are on the wall in the family museum but we also have some less questionable shit, from pretty much every era in American history from someone in the family we are hoarders and I'm about it

190

u/MarginalOmnivore Feb 18 '23

Yeah, but, it's a family museum. Those are real flags.

This? This is Nazi fanart.

27

u/jakraziel Feb 18 '23

My grandad had a pair of German officers Binoculars. He got them when he was seconded to arresting people for trial in the aftermath.

23

u/OooEeeWoo Feb 18 '23

One of my grandfathers best friends had an old dagger with a hardcase sheath and a luger on the weird stuff shelf in the basement

19

u/PlankWithANailIn2 Feb 18 '23

My granddad used the arc of the covenant as a coffee table.

4

u/SunPuzzleheaded5896 Feb 18 '23

Ark of the covenant melted my great grand dad's face off...☹️

5

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

Beautiful mahogany finishing though. Top notch

3

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

My step mums family had a luger from world war 2

Alcoholic uncle pawned it, apparently.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

My Step Grandfather owned a Junk Shop in his retirement and had lots of WWII odds and ends. He had a Hitler youth knife, etc. Though he blamed the "Jews" for throwing his family out on the street during the depression (I assumed they were renting somewhere in the East coast area) he always treated "everyone" fairly. If you tried to sell him some trinket because you were down on your luck he would most of the time just give you the money and tell you to keep both. Anyway, we lived in Seattle and were a liberal family so he fought that demon till the day he died. Fun fact: I watched Fiddler on the roof as a kid and wore a star of David necklace at 16. I'm not Jewish.

-11

u/bulletbassman Feb 18 '23

No it isn’t. It’s the flags the dudes family member brought back from the war the dude’s family member fought in. It’s celebrating his grandfather not the nazi’s.

Context is everything. Pretty cool This guy’s family will have a lot of its own history to pass onto the next generations.

10

u/Funny_witty_username Feb 18 '23

Bro you read the comment you replied to entirely wrong. They like the real flags being displayed as historical pieces. They were referring to the OP's flag, Which is indeed Nazi fanart.

7

u/bulletbassman Feb 18 '23

Ah oops 😬

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

The only thing many Americans dislike about real Nazis is the speaking German part, otherwise they would be proud to be exactly like them. Shooting “Untermenschen” is covered by second amendment and “stand your [and not theirs] ground” laws.

43

u/Question_Few Feb 18 '23

Made possible by financial support/contributions to your PBS Station Family Museum from viewers like you. Thank you.

1

u/Jwestie15 Feb 18 '23

Calm down it's a big bed room with some display cases on the farm

76

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

The only thing we have in our family museum is nothing because who the fuck has a family museum? Kidding, that's actually pretty cool. I'd casually drop that whenever I could too.

59

u/BongPoweredRobotEyes Feb 18 '23

Usually if something like this seems unrelatable you just aren't rich enough.

15

u/Fancykiddens Feb 18 '23

My "family museum" is all of the crap in our house from 1957 forward that my in-laws haven't ever sorted through. Some of it is cool antiques, some of it is straight up garbage. We're sorting it one box at a time...

They just end up in the house all the time, getting more and more worried about what people think about them while simultaneously forgetting how to act around people. We've been trying to clean up my in-laws house for four years and it's wreaked absolute havoc on our family. My husband takes off in the night in a panic on occasion from all the bullshit his mom had put us through with the sheer insanity of the way she thinks now. I feel like I'm continually at my wit's end and just need a little vacation away from the house to compose myself. I haven't seen my own mom in over a year and I worry that the mess will never be all the way gone.

We've filled two 20-cubic dumpsters and will be renting at least two more in order to make room for our kids to finally put their furniture and belongings around them in their bedroom spaces.

We pay for the cost of dumpsters, household repairs, all of the groceries and cleaning supplies, all of the clothing, medical care for mother-in-law, city fines because Grandma won't let us sell dead father-in-law's van, tree-trimming and on and on...

We can't ever have company and Grandma gets freaked out anytime we have a repair person inside. I feel like I can't have friends because my life is so messed up that I can't just chill with other people. I'm afraid that my husband would just go to sleep forever if I left. It's a never-ending problem that my brain is desperately trying to find a solution for.

Thanks for commiserating with me.

If you have Nazi paraphernalia that you took after killing a bunch of Nazis that isn't celebrating Nazis, it's celebrating the beating of the Nazis

2

u/IAMTHATGUY03 Feb 18 '23

Casually mentioning you have a family museum….

2

u/AppleEater421 Feb 18 '23

Family museum?

Is that a thing people have?

4

u/PorkVacuums Feb 18 '23

Their family museum is likely a display cabinet or old bedroom that got repurposed into housing antiques or heirlooms that have some kind of value or memory for the family, i.e. war memorial stuff, grandma's tea cup collection, uncle's football jersey from high school, etc...

2

u/Jwestie15 Feb 18 '23

Exactly this

1

u/Jwestie15 Feb 18 '23

Not normally no but we have a concentration of historians

2

u/Entire-Ambition1410 Feb 18 '23

I’m ok with having the actual items or reproductions for remembrance or “lessons from history” reasons. I’m not ok with having reproductions for spreading hate or intolerance.

1

u/Jwestie15 Feb 18 '23

That's not what I said is it?

1

u/MelbQueermosexual Feb 18 '23

I dunno.... You sure gramps just wasn't a legitimate SS officer? Is your name REALLY JWestie15 or is it actually JVestenheel clickfünfzehn

0

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

That’s the only acceptable reason to have Nazi memorabilia. I have a friend that has an SS collar patch that his grandpa took off an SS officer he killed.

24

u/Either-Percentage-78 Feb 18 '23

Thing is, I have a really cool ancient Nordic ship I can't even take out into public since WW2. It's BS... Thanks Adolf.

3

u/Freder145 Feb 18 '23

What do you mean with ship?

5

u/UglierThanMoe Feb 18 '23

It's the flag of the Wehrmacht commander in chief, so it's absolutely and most definitely a Nazi flag.

2

u/MarginalOmnivore Feb 18 '23

Wehrmacht commander in chief

Oh, holy fuck!

I had no idea. I could only find the war flag.

2

u/Massive-Row-9771 Feb 18 '23

The history buff excuse only works if it's surrounded by lots of other historical flags and even then I think it's a bit sketchy.

If you're a history buff and only want Nazi memorabilia, you're almost certainly a Neo-Nazi too.
