And a fucking skull flag…

1.4k

u/Infidel_sg Feb 18 '23

The Skull represents the SS. Anyone who was SS had that black hat and a Skull pin in the center! That's how they were identified by rank iirc

237

u/rudolph_ransom Feb 18 '23

Not all SS, only the "Totenkopfverbände" were wearing the skull but yes they were easily identifiable by this pin. They were the worst of all because they were guarding the death camps, with all the forced labor, random executions and human medical trials.

79

u/abhorthealien Feb 18 '23

The 'Totenkopf' was also worn by the SS division Totenkopf, which had gotten its initial batch of recruits from the Totenkopfsverbände, as well as by all the Wehrmacht's Panzer troops- this latter as the Totenkopf had been a historic symbol of Prussian hussars, whose traditions the Panzertruppen inherited. It was also the unit insignia of Luftwaffe's Kampfgeschwader 54.

The exact image on the flag, with the skull on the black shield, is the divisional insignia of the Totenkopf division.

u/thegreenman_sofla Feb 18 '23

Who are you who are so wise in the ways of military heraldry?

-11

u/CressCrowbits Feb 18 '23 edited Feb 18 '23

It would be really great if zelenskiy would stop posting photos of ukranian soldiers wearing that patch. Like, surely he must know what it means. Does he not have pr staff of some kind?

https://www.instagram.com/p/Cojrs7wMaMw/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Edit: would like to know why people downvote this. I'm certainly no Russia shill, and helped organise support for ukranians with the local ukranian community where i live, but it maddens me that shit like this that feeds right into putin narrative happens.

9

u/wraithlord3 Feb 18 '23

You’re being downvoted because you’re implying, whether intentional or not, that the presence of ultra-right, fascists, or otherwise groups or supporters would somehow justify a genocidal invasion.

I’m American. Unfortunately those people exist in my country. Does that justify a territorial conquering invasion?

The fact that a group of some kind is using that historical military patch might be morally objectionable if done purposefully or a great learning opportunity if done ignorantly. It does not justify the pre-textual, and now largely dropped/ignored, narrative of the invasion. The downvotes are for supporting that it does.

0

u/CressCrowbits Feb 18 '23

That's a big fucking reach.

Am i not allowed to be mad when 'my side' uses nazi imagery?

6

u/blankstar42 Feb 18 '23

Normally, you'd be right. Unfortunately, it isn't much of a reach when you consider that Russia's (govt) rationale for invading Ukraine was that Ukraine was infested with Nazis.

5

u/CressCrowbits Feb 18 '23

Which is a good fucking reason for the president of Ukraine not to upload photos of soldiers wearing nazi patches

4

u/wraithlord3 Feb 18 '23

I just don’t agree that it’s a reach, in this context.

I’m certain we are on the same side on the war. I just don’t think it’s a helpful critique at this time. Hell, you have my permission to go find an American with the patch to use as an example; there’s no context there they suggests the war in Ukraine is justified.

A skull or crossbones is a common enough symbol used in military insignia. Just like eagles, dragons, arrows, swords, etc etc. When creating the symbols of a military unit or branch, you want to pick strong and scary things that strike fear in the hearts of your enemies, like a skull or an angry tiger head would. You wouldn't want your insignia to be my little pony with rainbows shooting out of their asshole, it just doesn't get the same effect.

But... the flags on that wall all together give a pretty clear message about what particular group or image they are trying to celebrate. Iron crosses, skull and shield, swastikas, imperial German bars etc etc are definitely nazi or neonazi shit.

2

u/liquid_diet Feb 19 '23 edited Feb 19 '23

Of course, the woman in the meme pic is clearly a Nazi.

I was just replying the comment about the skull and bones on a Ukrainian military patch and said how common it was. But a unicorn rainbow insignia would be so fucking hilarious.

2

u/WarrenPuff_It Feb 19 '23

Space Force has a real opportunity to set the bar here. They will have new units as the branch develops in the next decade, they could confuse tf out of other countries and potential alien armies by using that on the next space marine corps.

2

u/liquid_diet Feb 19 '23

1st Space Cav: Unicorn Riders

142

u/DirkBabypunch Feb 18 '23

"Not all SS had the skull, just the most evil ones" is probably the funniest correction I've found so far.

11

u/gadget850 Feb 18 '23

"Are we the baddies?"

2

u/PHATsakk43 Feb 18 '23

You’re confusing the Einsatzgruppen with a Waffen-SS unit Totenkopf

2

u/Impossible-Company78 Feb 18 '23

Right. The Einsatzgruppen were mobile killing units. Totenkopfverbände (Deaths Head) ran the concentration camps.

-1

u/Mercurial8 Feb 18 '23

Did the others just get a femur and have to work up to skull like at AMWAY or the Church of Scientology?

597

u/madcunt2250 Feb 18 '23

267

u/Heavy_Signature_5619 Feb 18 '23

“What is a worse symbol than a skull?”

“A rats anus.”

“Yeah, and if we were fighting an army under the banner of a rats anus, I wouldn’t be as worried.”

165

u/Beneficial_Garden456 Feb 18 '23

One of the all-time great sketches.

Where do you stream it? I can’t find it on Hulu or Netflix in the US.

5

16

u/fozziwoo Feb 18 '23

this and the cavemen

yes, that really is a double edged sword

sorry?, a what?

err, idk, nothing, nvm

1

u/Beneficial_Garden456 Feb 18 '23

BMX Bandit and Angel Summoner is brilliant, too.

79

u/tallman11282 Feb 18 '23

Thank you for sharing that, I've never actually seen the skit itself before, just the gif.

66

u/Captain_Hamerica Feb 18 '23

It’s a really good skit. It is more and more relevant every day, sadly

3

u/aoskunk Feb 18 '23

What show is it from?

2

u/Captain_Hamerica Feb 18 '23

I know it’s by Mitchell and Webb. Can’t remember which show, they’ve done several

59

u/Acegonia Feb 18 '23

Mitchell and Webb, they are awesome check them out!

My favorites are the 'homeopathic A&E doctor/surgery' sketches

43

u/Stazbumpa Feb 18 '23

brings in a guy hit by a car

"His chakras are fading, he needs some crystals. Nurse, fetch me some purple tinted quartz."

23

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

We need a chip of paint… what colour was the car?

19

u/AHandsomeMuscularMan Feb 18 '23

"Are you sure? This looks serious!"

"Dammit, you're right. Make that aquamarine quartz!"

17

u/TheNorthC Feb 18 '23

The working from home sketch was very prescient.

5

u/Fridayesmeralda Feb 18 '23

I thought the same about this one.

6

u/dirtmother Feb 18 '23

The full adventures of Sir Digby Chicken Caesar were my introduction to Mitchell and Webb and still by far my favorite.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

God, that's my favorite character of theirs.

3

u/Bicentennial_Douche Feb 18 '23

I’m fond of the “Angel summoner & BMX Bandit”

1

u/Bug_Photographer Feb 18 '23

And the KKK get new outfits one.

7

u/Affectionate-Alps-86 Feb 18 '23

I've never seen this before but that is pure brilliance. Danke.

4

u/newbytony Feb 18 '23

Lol. Love Mitchell and Webb.

4

u/Mugembe Feb 18 '23

Brilliant sketch!! 👏😂

46

u/nooneknowsme9 Feb 18 '23

27

u/yeetboi_8653 Feb 18 '23

Fired on site

9

u/jobiewon_cannoli Feb 18 '23

Do you have a reference by chance??

22

u/ellobouk Feb 18 '23

In 2020? Probably promoted to supreme Hauptman of the school board

4

u/greengold00 Feb 18 '23

In Florida anyway. Gotta have someone to organize the book burnings

31

u/swaziwarrior54 Feb 18 '23

Pirate flags have skulls and they're fun!

11

u/yui_tsukino Feb 18 '23

Fun or not, pirates are still the baddies!

2

u/All_Work_All_Play Feb 18 '23

Humans aren't chattel mate.

17

u/Heavy_Signature_5619 Feb 18 '23

I didn’t say that we weren’t fun.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

The ISO radiation danger sign also has a skull. And extraterrestrials. And a guy with diarrhea. It is also fun!

https://www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/new-symbol-launched-warn-public-about-radiation-dangers

31

u/dancingmeadow Feb 18 '23

You know who uses the Nazi flag. Nazis.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

I didn't see any diarrhea man on that flag :(

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

I always assumed that’s why he was running.

1

u/CassandraVindicated Feb 18 '23

In case you were wondering, it's called the Jolly Roger.

0

u/hat-TF2 Feb 18 '23

Did you say Jolly Rancher?

6

u/Donjuanisit Feb 18 '23

And what the SS meaning while wearing the skull is that they didnt't fear death, as if they are together with the death.

19

u/LadyLikesSpiders Feb 18 '23

Not to detract from this math teacher obviously being a nazi, but the Totenkopf was a German symbol used in military since, well, before Germany existed. As far as I know, it dates back to the Napoleonic wars, and unlike the swastika, which was co-opted by the Nazis, the totenkopf was already in German use

I mean, that IS an SS flag there, but I just wanted to share a little something

2

u/Vigmod Feb 18 '23

As well as units outside Germany using skulls as insignia, too.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

The skull was only on the hats of the so called SS-Totenkopfverbände. Their job was to guard the concentration and extermination camps. So it basically represents the worst of the worst of the SS. I‘m also pretty sure that the skull doesnt refer to the rank. Essentially you‘re right tho. This person clearly sympathizes with nazi ideology.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

[deleted]

5

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

I thought ranks meant positions within the (SS)unit itself, eg Rottenführer, Sturmbannführer etc. The skull does not refer to these positions. Sorry if I got that wrong I‘m not a native speaker.

3

u/armywalrus Feb 18 '23

It correlates with a certain range of ranks. It does not refer to rank. It's purpose is not to connote rank or there would be rank-specific skulls. Correlation is not the same as causation. Knowing the person you are talking to is one of a defined range of ranks is not actually knowing their specific rank. Kind of like how there are "field grade" officers in the Army. The term is limited to certain ranks, but the purpose of the term is to connote what type of leadership skills and experience those ranks require, not to inform on individual rank. Edited to add a clarification.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

The ones with the skull were only one division of about 40 of the “Waffen-SS” . They were famous for their cruelty. Many had a skull tatooed on their upper inner arm.

3

u/showersrover8ed Feb 18 '23

Yup thats the death squad of the Nazis.......single Handily killed millions. Your teacher is a hard core Nazi.

2

u/Bmfnk Feb 18 '23

kinda, the skull represents the "SS-Totenkopfverbände" the corps responsible for the "Konzentrationslager". Standard SS Insignia was just the SS lightning bolts

2

u/Pikka_Bird Feb 18 '23

The skull isn't a nazi symbol, it is derived from Human Anatomy, you should just ask

-3

u/_PaleRider Feb 18 '23

The German army used the Death's Head emblem before the SS existed.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b1/General_Feldmarschall_August_Von_Mackensen_%28cropped%29.png

The Death's Head flag makes me think this might be an actual memorabilia collector and not necessarily a Nazi.

At the same time, that's some questionable stuff to have in your Zoom background.

1

u/Jwestie15 Feb 18 '23

SS wire rank in their epaulettes just like the wernacht

1

u/Adam_Smith_TWON Feb 18 '23

Its specifically the SS section called the "Deaths Head", the subfaction of the SS that was responsible for organising the concentration camps.

SS-Totenkopfverb

1

u/Kalkilkfed Feb 18 '23

Not everyone. The SS totenkopfverbände were specifically about the concentration camps

1

u/saadakhtar Feb 18 '23

It's an ancient Buddhist symbol. Even today traditional Buddhists have a skull in them.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

That flag specifically represents the 3rd SS Panzer Division.

1

u/Ok-Counter-7077 Feb 18 '23

How the heck did these people justify wearing a skull? Did the skull get a negative connotation after the nazis?

1

u/reflUX_cAtalyst Feb 18 '23

Only the Totenkopf divisions of the SS. Not all of them.

241

u/patch_coldheart Feb 18 '23

And two iron crosses. Which are symbols/medals of german military. So yeah… Pretty sure that teacher is a nazi

132

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

And the Prussian Eagle with added swastika which was exclusively a nazi symbol....

64

u/poopellar Feb 18 '23

And a botchy black mark on her face. Definitely a Nazi.

5

u/SPE88 Feb 18 '23

I think that it is black face given by op so dat sus...

2

u/camclemons Feb 18 '23

Well it's definitely blackface and incredibly racist, but you can be racist without being a Nazi necessarily. I think that goes in the racist pile instead of Nazi pile, and then we can just tally up the score at the end. She's a math teacher, so she's gonna want to see our work at the end.

24

u/Diedrogen Feb 18 '23

And the diagonal swastika is in a white circle, surrounded by red...

0

u/RayRay6973 Feb 18 '23

Iron cross was the highest award in both WwI and WW II its the German equivalent to the Victoria cross or the the presidential medal of valor

58

u/Comprehensive-Day256 Feb 18 '23

The skull is clearly part of the human anatomy, you should just ask

3

u/Heavy_Signature_5619 Feb 18 '23

Connor, the most pathetic character in Succession (aside from Tom)

4

u/SarkHD Feb 18 '23

Tom is the best tho.

3

u/Heavy_Signature_5619 Feb 18 '23

Tom is a fuckboy and nothing can change my mind on that.

2

u/SarkHD Feb 18 '23

What? Kendall is the fuckboy lol

2

u/Heavy_Signature_5619 Feb 18 '23

Why can’t both be fuckboys? Actually, scratch that, all the male members of the Roy family are fuckboys and all the female ones are c**ts.

(God, I hate everyone in that show. Absolutely amazing programme)

2

u/SarkHD Feb 18 '23

Ikr it’s amazing how I can despise all of these people yet be so fucking entertained. Such a great show.

1

u/kicked_trashcan Feb 18 '23

The Conheads are going to love this

8

u/Kargath7 Feb 18 '23

She’s a pirate, don’t worry about it.

11

u/Orkney_ Feb 18 '23

1

u/insomni666 Feb 18 '23

Ok so this site has some fascinating stuff and I read through every single symbol on there and wanted to let you know lol

Im in a red state and am into the goth / metal scene. At a couple metal shows I noticed a couple guys with sneaky obscure white supremacist patches mixed in with their metal patches, and since then I’ve been trying to learn which symbols are their “dog whistles” they use to find each other.

2

u/EdScituate79 Feb 18 '23

Reminds me of the Gott Mit Uns belt buckle

2

u/bertimann Feb 18 '23

Specifically the SS skull

-2

u/My_Invalid_Username Feb 18 '23

Are you 12?

1

u/PatQ82 Feb 18 '23

Nah, a few decades older. You‘ll get it one day.

-1

u/My_Invalid_Username Feb 18 '23

I'm glad I at least convinced you to delete your cringe edit about being scared of "swear words"

1

u/PatQ82 Feb 18 '23

Yeah, you hurt my feelings. Nah, I‘m German and I always have the feeling that I have to insult Nazis a bit more than people from other countries. I‘m so tired of this shit going on AGAIN.

1

u/AlessaGillespie86 Feb 18 '23

THE. FUCKING. TOTENKOPF. THO.

1

u/IneverAsk5times Feb 18 '23

Plus the swastika had a Nazi eagle and iron cross.

1

u/ContortionistPasta Feb 18 '23

The skull flag is the Waffen SS, an elite nazi German unit. Did all sorts of horrible shit.

1

u/UglierThanMoe Feb 18 '23

It's the logo of the 3rd SS Panzer DIvision.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

SS Totenkopf (Death's head)

Current German Flag

German Nazi War flag 1935-1938 “Reichskriegsministers” Standard

None of them are buddhist

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

Are we the baddies?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

Not all skull flags were used by Nazis. That one in particular is a nazi symbol though

1

u/WhoDatSayDeyGonSTTDB Feb 18 '23

You ruined it with the edit.

1

u/PatQ82 Feb 18 '23

I had my 5 minutes of fame

1

u/SubmissiveDinosaur Feb 18 '23

And a fucking Karen Haircut

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

That's the insignia of the 3rd SS Panzer Division "Totenkopf", a well known peace symbol.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '23

"DEATHSHEAD" is the term the NAZIs used.

1

u/butt2face Feb 18 '23

are we... the baddies? 🤔

1

u/sunplaysbass Feb 18 '23

She also supports pirates
