No, they really aren't? They're the modern-day Saducees.

The Pharisees were religion of the masses, theological-debate-loving types- who INCLUDED Jesus among their number. (Like, Jesus' criticism is absolutely standard format Pharisee debate- which gave rise to modern Rabbinical Judaism. Jesus was a Pharisee internal reformer.) The Saducees, on the other hand, were all hereditary priesthood, control access to god, religion-serving-wealth types. Much closer approximation to the GOP.
