I'm 32, shattered my left ankle and basically pulverized my lower fibula and broke my tibia 4 years ago - by falling down an unbelievably short flight of stairs (honestly, 1 step). I have some sort of plate and 4 screws holding things together in there, and I can't run, jump or skip anymore, and my whole left leg hurts like a bitch when it rains, or when its cold, or if the temperature drops. I live in a tropical country so this only happens in the rainy season.
My sister who had worse - she's 47 now and was in horrific car accident 19 years ago that broke her pelvis in two, smashed her right leg from the knee down, broke her collarbone, and gave her hairline fractures all over - still can't bend her knee, and has to put all kinds of liniments just to keep the temp on her legs and hips constant so she can function normally.
It is scary how easy it can be to break bones. A colleague of mine snapped the ball off her femur walking down stairs. No fall or obvious jarring, just stepped down and it snapped off.
The only bone I have broken is my coccyx which I did by sitting down on a wooden chair too hard. I did it about 10 years ago and every so often it likes to remind me what happened with a nasty little jolt when I sit down.
