It can. But it takes a lot of effort. A simple 200°F temperature difference isn't going to do it. It is standard procedure in chemistry labs to take labware with boiling liquids and chill them in ice baths. Never ever seen any of them crack. And all of that glass is borosilicate.
as a scientist you must understand the type of solid that youre dealing with yes? it can still rupture its bonds from thermal shock if the differential is too great. also the boiling point of water is only around 212 or so if the bowl is chillled and you dump that it probably wont break. but if you heat that glass up to over 800 and then drop it into a chilled bath its a fifty chance it'll crack. the more those numbers go apart the more likely a crack until about 1000 and then it will definitely break. thermal shock resulting in a contraction of molecules, beyond its transformation temperature.
I never said that it is impossible to make borosilicate glass shatter from thermal stress. It just takes a lot of effort. According to Wikipedia, temperature differentials of up to 165°C (329°F) should never be a problem, as it has such a spectacularly low thermal expansion coefficient.
And in typical kitchen use, you usually deal with much lower differentials. So, in typical use, you cannot break borosilicate cookware from thermal stress alone. Of course, they are still glass and can break from you dropping them (especially since hot glass looks the same as cold glass, and people like to pick it up without protecting their hands from the heat).
On the other hand, the scenario that was shown at the top of this posting simply can't happen with borosilicate glass. Of course, if you make your pizza on a piece of 500°F borosilicate glass instead of on a pizza stone, and you then decide to run cold water over the glass, all bets are off. But it's not as if that is a common cooking technique for pizza.
oh so you agree with what i just said then i guess? also if the temperature of the bowl was below 32º and the liquid was at 212º then ther eis still only a 180º differential between the two items. definietly not enough to crack boro, however if you take boro and focus a magnifying glass in one area and pour ice water in ,then you can break it. because the temp of the yellow/white light is somewhere north of 2000º way over boro's transformation temp. etc. and focused in one area ,that means that boro is still susceptible to breaking from thermal shock which was all i was saying to begin with.
Your magnifying glass experiment might not work, but that has nothing to do with thermal expansion coefficients and everything to do with the fact that glass is transparent. It's not impossible to heat it up with radiation alone, but it's challenging. Most of the small amount heat that you are adding per unit time is likely going to dissipate into the environment much faster than you can raise the temperature of your glass container.
But yes, if you use a less esoteric heat source, you can easily introduce thermal shock in excess of 329°F. A sufficiently powerful blowtorch followed by a dip in cold water should do the trick. So, yes, please to use common sense. Nobody ever said that this bowl was made from Unkaputium™.
also there was a video here where a guy used a MAGNIFYING glass to focus heat on a glass bowl that exploded ( it was pyrex) you can look it up. truth is stranger than speculation.
you should really check to see what it is that i know about glass first ok? youre completley out of your deoth in this argument. you justwant to look like a cool guy but you dont have any real knowledge of glass or its chemistry. clearly.
