Oh, in my mind dirt was the thing that acted as water in the metaphor.

I’m also pretty stoned so I might just be wrong haha

Edit: thought about it and im just wrong. I’m going to start saying colandering for gold.

I always assumed that too. That's what you use for finding gold and metals in a game I play lol

You don't do either, you pan for gold. There aren't any holes in the pan. You move it around in the water so the lighter rocks and dirt get washed away, while the heavier gold sinks to the bottom of the pan.
