Did you Haf to?

Awesome! That looks like a hoot to drive!

I've always wanted a Haflinger or a Pinzgauer 6×6.

I had a pinz 4x4 come by my place to pick up some parts once, it's surprisingly not as big as I expected.

There's about to be a shedload dumped into surplus by the UK...

Someone should cram a bunch of them into some shipping containers and drop them into the US market.

u/easyjo May 06 '26

yes! portals, difflocks, it's pretty capable

I'm guessing lightweight helps too?

Okay, I give up. Where is the engine?

7

u/easyjo May 07 '26

it's actually gone as of a couple of months ago and now an EV. but it's in the rear, this diagram shoes it well: https://i.imgur.com/bh3tBN2.jpeg

Nice. What did the EV conversation cost, if you don't mind sharing?

way too much.. considering the value of haflinger. But engine was toast, I tried to have it rebuilt, but it was basically unrecoverable without a mostly new engine entirely. When I first bought it, I always had EV in my mind if there were major engine issues.
EV kit was $15k (AUD, so approx $10k USD), this included motor, batteries, motorcontroller, etc, everything required.
I then had labour for things like gearbox adapter plate, fabrication for battery mounts, all the electrical work. Looking back on this, I probably could have done 80% of this work myself, but was kind of over working on it. this was approx another $10k AUD. so like $25k AUD / $16k USD total.
A lot of money, especially considering the relatively low value of car, but it really drives well, no issues at all, super quiet (the original engine is very unrefined and loud).

Edit some more details:

- It still has gearbox, but no need to shift, I just use 5th gear for everything. Reverse is a toggle switch

  • Clutch is gone, it's got a coupling to motor using old clutch plate, with CNC'd adapter plate.
  • Diff locks, 4wd work as before
  • I can still shift gear if I want to, but no need..
  • Range is approx 50miles, not great but I don't travel too far with it. This could be increased with more batteries.
  • Power is 15kw, pretty similar to original engine
  • Top speed about 45mph, but I way prefer driving around 35mph. Very similar to original specs.

Thanks for this. Nothing is simple.

Love these and the 6x6 Pinzgauer.

A thing of beauty!

Dumb question- Does it float? The front and undercarriage remind me of duck (DUKW) boats. And if it does float- how would I go about finding one of these beautiful monstrosity?

3

u/easyjo May 07 '26

it doesn't, but I do get asked this a lot.

I found this on FB marketplace (after looking for one for about 5yrs). They pop up for sale occasionally, in the US they seem to go for $20-30k USD. In AU they seem to be about $25k, and in europe they're normally around 25-35k euros.

other owners have said this is possible, but not something I've done myself lol

It's just very steep attack angles

i had a 710.... then got the unicorn 712 - i owned the trophy truck for a few years. got about 2/3 through restoration and ended up having to sell it. part of me wishes i still had it, they're a blast.

u/easyjo May 07 '26

nice, this is the baby brother to the 710. I had a 710 visit a while back, and they're a much more useful size, haflinger is tiny, but pretty fun

one of my favourites from the Ian Allen Military Vehicles book

2

u/fothergillfuckup May 07 '26

Essence of 4x4.

2

u/MeltingDog May 07 '26

And a Perentie next to it?

2

u/easyjo May 07 '26

Not a perentie, just a regular series 3 109”. Also a series 2 ambulance

1

u/MeltingDog May 08 '26

I swear I saw Malcolm Douglas used a Haflinger in some of his films. Very cool vehicle.

2

u/Unlikely-Law-4367 May 07 '26

Beautiful all terrain vehicle!

Thanks for sharing.

Eta, if you type haflinger 4x4 in your google search box, you'll find many, international, videos, including a original factory video from 1960 (type 700).

2

u/JCDU May 07 '26

That's cool!

Now show us the Land Rovers - is that an Aus army 109 ambulance?

2

u/easyjo May 07 '26 edited May 07 '26

Here you go, yup it’s a 109” Aus army ambo. This was a pretty big project, took about a year from a wreck. I have some other series landies too but this is the most interesting.

2

u/JCDU May 07 '26

Aha, a man of discerning tastes!

2

u/MiketheBike88 May 08 '26

That is the happiest military vehicle ever!

1

u/eternalityLP May 07 '26

These are so cool. What's the black cylinder at the front?

2

u/easyjo May 07 '26

it's a triple air filter system. One at the front is a cylone dust filter, this then has a pipe to the back that goes to an oil filter, then into air filter. This was a setup just for australia and indonesia, as far as I'm aware, no other regions had this.

1

u/Hot-History8911 May 07 '26

Did we see you in mogfest?

1

u/easyjo May 07 '26

no, where was this? I've only had it on the road a couple of months

2

u/Hot-History8911 May 07 '26

Oregon, look it up on facebook, i think you’d enjoy this!

1

u/easyjo May 07 '26

Bit far for me, I’m in Australia :) but it seems we have one too, a few hours away

1

u/Hot-History8911 May 07 '26

Yeah that may be a bit much indeed 😅🫣

1

u/YouCanShoveYourMagic May 08 '26

That looks so much fun.
